1 Uniclass L756 EPIC L61 CI/S/fB (56.49) x ROTEX System 70 ROTEX Environmental Management UK 2005 When specifying a ROTEX heat distribution system you are dealing with a manufacturer with over 20 years experience in producing complete heating systems. We are at the forefront of the evolution in low energy heat distribution technology and have played a pioneering role in many of the new developments available today. To date, we have manufactured millions of meters of fl oor heating pipes. 2 Applications System 70 can be installed in virtually any building with a hot water system including:- o Schools o Hospitals o Apartments o Houses o Nursing homes o Nurseries o Day-care centres o Retail outlets o Indoor swimming pools o Doctors surgeries o Office atrium o Conservatories o Museums o Churches For larger surfaces such as those found in industrial buildings, warehouses, foyers and gymnasiums, System 70 Industry can be used. This utilises DUO-25 heating pipes (25 / 18 x 2 mm). For smaller areas, the DUO -17 heating pipe (17 / 12 x 2mm) is utilised and both types of pipe may be combined in one unit. Authority The heating pipe used complies with the requirements of DIN 4726/4729, thermal output has been tested and approved to DIN 4725 and impact sound insulation characteristics exceed the specifications of DIN The heat outputs of this pipe have been tested and verified by the University of Stuttgart, dept. of heating, ventilation and air conditioning according to DIN/EN1264. There are three different types of this pipe available: Duo 25, Duo 17 and Duo 17 Al, each one with its own specific characteristics as detailed in our full technical publication and each with its own DIN/EN 1264 certificate verifying it s outputs. All these pipes are manufactured by ROTEX Gmbh at their German factory and come with a fifty year guarantee and warranty. The requirements for PE -X heating pipes laid out in DIN16 892, DIN 4726 and DIN 4729 are also fully met and greatly exceeded in many cases. A variety of polystyrene insulation clipping plates are also available from ROTEX. These again are manufactured at the German factory and conform to all relevant standards including DIN (thermal conductivity), DIN (impact sound insulation) and DIN 4102 (fireproofing for building construction).

3 DESCRIPTION Pipework ROTEX System 70 uses a duo pipe made of irradiated cross-linked, oxygen-impermeable PE -X and is covered with a ribbed PE outer sheath. This sheath suspends the inner pipe in the middle of the outer and acts as an insulator thereby ensuring that when the pipe is laid in a floor it cannot overheat the floor surface when laid at its design spacing. (All pipes have a maximum allowable temperature of 90ºc with short term strain at 110ºc both at 7 bar. However it is recommended that when put in a floor screed that 82ºc is not exceeded to prevent maximum floor surface temperatures rising above 29ºc.) 3 versions are available: DUO 17 has an overall diameter of 17.5 mm and is ideal for floor heating; DUO 17AL has an additional aluminium support layer that enables the pipe to retain any bent shape; this is ideal for connecting to radiators; DUO 25 is of similar construction but of 25 mm outside diameter making it ideal for larger heating areas. Direct connection to radiators is achieved by connecting DUO 17 AL pipes direct to a floor manifold or to central supply pipes using the VA sliding sleeve PPSU installation system. In the heart of the system is the duo pipe; a conventional system using a mono pipe would mean that you could not use a higher than 60ºc flow temperature with more than a 10ºc temperature drop across the system to ensure maximum floor temperatures are not exceeded and evenness of floor temperature across its entire surface.

4 However with the duo pipe a flow temperature of 80ºc with a 30ºc drop will achieve the same surface temperatures outputs etc so if the boiler flow temperature is higher than 60ºc it makes sense to use the duo pipe. If a mono pipe is used at these temperatures an injection system must be used to limit outputs. This injection system is an inherent weak spot as it is reliant on a mechanical device to guarantee floor surface temperatures. If an injection system is used at each manifold then considerable pump power, energy consumption and maintenance issues are added to the system, also the return to the boiler is probably not low enough to utilise the energy savings brought about when using condensing boiler technology. If a single injection system is used at the boilerhouse the above still holds true to a lesser extent but there will be a duplication of pipework, installation, lagging etc. The use of the duo pipe not only solves the above problems but because of the larger delta t s also gives further energy saving in pump power. The heat loss for the area under design must be ascertained and the floor covering considered. With a tiled floor to a room condition of 21ºc the maximum heat output is 90w/m2; this gives a floor surface temperature of 29ºc, with a 300mm pipe spacing and using duo 17 pipe (inner pipe 12 mm dia) this can be achieved with a mean water temperature of 63ºc: that is a flow of 78 and a return of 48. A room of say 20 m2 would therefore require 67m of tube at a flow rate of 51 l/hr the pressure loss would be 11.4 kpa. Compared with a mono pipe of 14mm dia this is achieved with 300 mm pipe spacing with a mean water temperature of 47ºc that is a flow of 52 and a return of 42. The same room would require 67m of tube but at a flow rate of 154 l/hr and 32.2 kpa that is 3 times the flow rate at nearly 3 times the head. The energy savings are plain to see and when this is scaled up to a large project the energy balance is considerable, and ensures the Duo System is by far the best option. Heating Manifold The heating manifold, also manufactured by ROTEX, consists of flow and return headers with a minimum of two loops and a maximum of fourteen loops fed from each manifold. The same manifold can take any of the pipes and allows complete flexibility of design. See Fig.1 The flow header has a control actuator fitted to each loop: this actuator can be 240 V or 24 V on/off or proportional. The actuator is controlled by a stand-alone controls system or from a BEMS system and is compatible with most controls manufacturers. See Fig. 2 As no injection system is required to mix down primary water and therefore no pump or 3 way mixing valve only an adjacent 3 amp fused power supply is required to power the actuators and - if necessary - room thermostat. The return header incorporates a sixteen position double regulating valve to allow balancing of each individual loop. The position of this valve can be taken from our design program which calculates the hydraulic adjustment based upon flow rate, pipe length and therefore pressure loss for each individual loop. Where the heating demand exceeds floor output available, it is possible to connect additional heat sources such as radiators / perimeter heating. See Fig. 3

5 Fig 1 Fig 2 Fig 3 The manifold comes complete with isolating valves, drain cocks, pressure gauges, temperature gauges and air vents fitted to both flow and return headers and the manifold is housed within a painted galvanized metal cabinet into which all controls and wiring also fit thereby ensuring a safe and aesthetically pleasing solution. System Floor Plates System 70 utilises system plates within which the pipes are positioned. These ensure constant temperature, high levels of thermal and impact sound insulation, total surrounding of pipes within the screed and ease of installation. See Figs. 5 & 6 The plate acts not only as an insulator but as a pipe clipping system which depending on the design will give spacing pipes in 75 mm increments. 6 The patented manufacturing process makes it possible to manufacture two different density layers within one plate thereby achieving not only the required thermal insulation but incorporating an impact resistant layer which improves sound reduction by 29 db. There are 2 types of plate. The Protect system plate comprises 2 sheets. The polystyrene lower sheet incorporates the heat and sound insulation and the upper sheet has naps that enable longitudinal or diagonal pipe laying. The latter is of grey polystyrol and overhangs the adjacent plates for efficient sealing. Two types are offered: Protect-Integral 33/30, with integral insulation and is used, for example, to insulate / isolate between 2 storeys. Protect 10 is for rooms with a lower construction height or where insulation is already fitted. The standard system plates are entirely of polystyrene and there are 3 types to meet the different requirements of ceilings (Basic-Integral 33/30), low construction heights (Mono 15) and where higher heat insulation is required (Compact 68). The ROTEX System 70 secco is a dry system designed for retrofitting in older buildings. 7 OPERATION, MAINTENANCE Operation can be stand alone or incorporated into building controls protocol including BEMS, Variable temperature or Constant temperature. Maintenance as per standard pipework distribution maintenance regime. Please as no pumps or three point mixing valves are required this system is virtually maintenance free. ECONOMICS Guarantee When ROTEX System 70 is fitted by an approved installer, the following warranty applies:- * PE-XC heating pipes will be replaced, if defective, for a period up to fifty years * ROTEX System plates will be replaced, if defective, for a period up to ten years * ROTEX will reimburse installation costs where they have supplied defective materials for a period up to ten years * For damage to a client s property caused by the installation of faulty ROTEX-manufactured materials, ROTEX will be responsible for making good any damage caused for a period up to ten years * ROTEX will also be responsible for additional expenditure arising as a result of the removal, disassembly or clearing of defective materials and the assembly, installation or laying of faultfree materials to a maximum of 5 million for a period up to ten years. (Full guarantee details can be found in technical manual) SUPPLY All products are supplied and installed by ROTEX Environmental Management Ltd. SERVICES Services to specifiers comprise system advice, design, calculations, manufacture and supply. The system design is carried out by the ROTEX design bureau and is also shown in their technical brochure. It calculates heat consumption for a building in accordance with DIN 4701 and using this information the complete system can be designed in compliance with current norms and technical guidelines.
