All windows subsequently dried in the sunlight.

2 Comments A-Series Photos Bath Marvin Integrity 21: Condensation begins at 9:00 p.m. 12/10 6: Heavy condensation; almost dripping. 12/11 6: Heavy condensation on all A-Series. bath: Slight condensation in lowerleft corner (likely caused by proximity to open toilet bowl directly below and the closed bottom-sash curtain blocking the room s heat). heating was active during the night but unable to evaporate moisture off A- Series. All downstairs windows and doors dry, including Woodwrights. 7: Moved Sensor 1 to 1st-floor dining-room table for duration of tests.

Experiment Phase 1 10:00 a.m. Initiated experiment on right-hand top sash of 2-gang window in master bedroom to provide side-by-side comparison of any benefits. Installed ½-inch rigid-foam insulation in top sash s bottom channel, and on bottom and outside surfaces. NOTE: Spike in recorded room conditions caused by shutting off heat and removing sash. Room went down to 55 degrees, 34% humidity. 10:20 a.m. closed windows; started experiment. 21: Condensation begins at 9:00 p.m. 12/16 7: Condensation on all A-Series. Little improvement discernable on Experimental sash described above.

4 Comments A-Series Photos 9: Experiment Phase 2: Added backer rod to seal-face area of Experimental sash; dried pane. Experimental sash re-condensed quickly but to a lesser degree than its mate. All windows subsequently dried in the sunlight. Right-hand window now has the following amendments: rigid foam insulation as described above and backer-rod at seal face (as described on John s website The results shown at right indicate conditions shortly after backer-rod was added and righthand sash was dried thoroughly. Obviously, these conditions are inconclusive, as the window unit was not yet subjected to extended, overnight conditions. 21: Condensation returned at sunset and increased linearly. 12/17 6: No condensation; windows dried during night as outside temperature increased from 12 to /18 7: No sweating. 12/19 6: Minor sweating in corners of A-Series. 12/20 6: Inconclusive day for test. No condensation at 6:20. Windows opened from 9:00 to 10:00 to install Andersen shims, etc. Windows remained open for several hours afterward to air fragrances from house. 12/21 6: No sweating.

Experiment Phase 3 (1-7-17): Opened latches on 2-gang master-bedroom windows to allow rail seal to mate at center (defeating latch s detente): Drew sashes together with elastic bands. Verified that no vertical movement occurred to separate rail seals. Measurements/photos below represent conditions/results recorded after Andersen s sensor was removed from consideration. Where environmental data is not available, I used the upstairsbathroom window as a baseline. NOTE: Right-hand 2-gang master-bedroom sash showed improvement with all three amendments applied (rigid foam, backer rod, and elastic-band closure). 1/7 Environmental data not available. Bathroom window dry. Considerable condensation. Right-hand Experimental window shows diminished condensation. 1/8 Outside : 9 Inside : 60 Inside : 41% Bathroom window dry. Extensive condensation Image filtered to increase condensation s visibility. Considerably less condensation on right-hand Experimental window.

6 NOTE: On 1-8, I removed the elastic bands from the latches on the 2-gang master-bedroom sashes, and closed the latches. The two remaining amendments (rigid foam and backer rod) remained on the right-hand sash. 1/9 Outside : 8 Inside : 60 Inside : 38% There is no discernable improvement in the Experimental Sash at right. Overall Observations of All Experiments described above: It would appear that only the combination of rigid foam, backer rod, and elastic-band latch-closure resulted in any discernable improvement (as shown on 1-8 above). Notably, reverting back to the Andersen latches appears to negate any gains made by the rigid foam and backer rod. This 2nd-floor bedroom window is in the exact south-facing position of the bathroom window at right, simply one room over.
