4 Part M of the Buildings Regulation 2000, took effect on 1st May 2004 for England and Wales, sets out requirements and guidelines covering access to, and use of, buildings and its facilities to meet the requirement highlighted in the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) Practical advice on elements such as the provision of wide doorways and appropriate sanitary facilities are covered by this regulation. Part M specifically highlights the use of switches, outlets and controls, giving guidance on four main product elements: Ease of Operation Visibility Height Freedom from obstruction

5 How this can be achieved? Ease of Operation and Visibility Assisting in the operation and controls can be as simple as introducing switches with larger rockers, and sockets that have wider gaps between rockers. The installation and control switches with contrasting colours to their surroundings, provides ease operation and improve visibility. Using white products on dark walls or simply installing dark accessories on white/cream walls. As many registered blind people still have some colour vision, ensuring a minimum of 30 points of LRV difference will in the majority of cases assist visually impaired people. Although these developments were designed to aid consultants and installers comply with their understanding of Part M, with our improved range we can ensure the final products achieve a modern, stylish finish to complement any home or office environment. Part M contrast guide Min. 30% contrast in LRV Insufficient contrast 30% contrast from white 30% contrast from black Insufficient contrast Min. 30% contrast in LRV To ensure Part M visibility requirements, a difference of 30 points in Light Reflectance Value (LRV) is required between the accessory and its surroundings. Height and Freedom from Obstruction Locating products at the correct height allows access to be achieved by all. Accessories must be mounted at a height which will make them accessible but prevent damage by being struck or wetted by floor cleaning equipment, and allow a comfortable bending radius for larger or stiff flexible cords. (Regulation ). The Building Regulations 2000 Approved Document M, Access and Facilities for disabled people, recommends appropriate mounting heights between 400 mm and 1200 mm for electrical equipment in dwellings. Contrasting coloured outboard rockers improve visibility as well as operation. Utilising polycarbonate s high impact properties, installation in high traffic areas gives, without question, superior robustness and coloured options Switches Schneider Electric s enhanced range of switches provides a solution for all applications without compromising operation. Two-tone units ease the location of lighting within any commercial or residential application Wide rockers ease the operation of a wall switch Two-tone wide rockers combine visual and operational enhancements Grid switches An enhanced range of grid switch plates provides additional solutions without compromising operation. Incorporating flexibility, they deliver a solution for residential and commercial applications.

7 Pull cords Part M also recommends the use of contrasting coloured pull cords to the surroundings. Grey bangles assist with the operation of lighting. These large bangles aid the ceiling switch operation and are easier to locate. Engraving To provide added assistance when trying to identify electrical switches and their application. A full range of engraved products are now available. Cable management Part M plates simply fit over the socket mounting box and are secured under the wiring accessory. Alternatively complete grey sections with white accessories can be incorporated. This application will provide the contrast required for visually impaired people.

8 Wiring accessories with a difference High Impact Be it from accidental damage, vandalism or abuse, a damaged wiring accessory can become a safety hazard as well as requiring an expensive planned or emergency call out. Being virtually unbreakable they can reduce the risk of damage and the need to be replaced, ensuring they don t become a safety hazard. With colour options available, Part M compliance is possible. Location made simple With the Grooved V socket its goal is to assist the user with independent living. This is achieved by including location aid that directs the plug to the earth terminal. With the simple addition of grooves from the corners of the socket to the earth aperture guides any 13A plug across the socket straight into its correct location. Ideal for disabled and ablebodied alike. Essential & Critical Supply Where applications call for equipment to identify essential or critical supply, a range of red devices are also now available. In addition where emergency call functions are necessary, for example homes for the elderly or disabled accommodation the range extends to include red emergency pull cords thereby meeting the requirements of Part M(1).
