All members of the Garden Club Forum are invited to exhibit. 2. The Standard System of Awarding will be used for all competitive judging: only one first place (blue) ribbon per class or sub class, which must score 90, or above; only one second place (red) ribbon per class or sub class which must score 85, or above; only one third place (yellow) ribbon per class or sub class which must score 80, or above; one or more honorable mention, (white) ribbons, if merited, must score 75 or above. An NGC Accredited Flower Show Judge must sign and date the entry card of any entry that receives a 90 or above, regardless of ribbons won. Decisions of the judges will be final. Exhibits must not be altered after the judging. Awards will be withheld if not merited. 3. The Flower Show Chair and Classification Chairs for each division are to be present during judging. The Classification Chairs will check the exhibits for conformity to the schedule and will initial the entry cards signifying approval. 4. Plants on the state conservation list, that are grown by the exhibiter or obtained legally, and so identified, can be used, unless the schedule/law prohibits it. 5. Entries will be received Thursday, June 25, 2015, 6:00 PM. 8: PM. and Friday, June 26, 2015, 8:00 AM. 10:00 AM. Only the exhibiters will be allowed in the exhibit room to place entries. 6. Judging will begin promptly at 11:30 AM., Friday, June 26, Only required personnel will be permitted in the flower show room during judging. 2

3 7. The show will open on Friday, June 26, 2015, 6:00 PM. 8. Entries must be removed by Monday, June 29, 2015, at by 12 o clock, noon. All members of the committee are expected to participate in dismantling and clean- up. 9. An emphasis in all Divisions is to be on fresh plant material. Horticulture Division Rules 1. All plant material, whether cut specimens or container-grown plants, must be fresh and grown by the exhibiter. 2. Cut annuals and biennials must have been in the exhibiter s possession from seeds, cuttings, or immature plants; perennials and bulbous blooms for at least 90 days; container-grown plants must have been in the possession of the exhibiter for at least 3 months; however, an exception is made for multiple plants where just six weeks of possession/ 6 weeks of growing together is required. Exhibit must be properly labeled with correct botanical names (genius and species), variety/cultivar. 3. All Container-Grown Plants Must be pre-registered by June 19, Horticulture Classification Chairman and Consultant: Alaina Meister Horticulture Placement: Gerry Crouse 4. More than 1 entry per class may be entered by the exhibiter, provided each is of a different cultivar, type or color. 5. Entry cards may be obtained from the Classification Chairman prior to the show or on the day of the show prior to judging, but should be filled out in advance, if possible, in pencil or waterproof ink. 6. Container-grown plants must be well groomed. 7. No chemical shine, oiling, or artificial color is permitted. Some wedging (bubble wrap) may be used by the committee for support of the specimens. Cut specimens should not have any foliage below the water line. 8. The committee will supply containers except when indicated in the schedule. 9. Double potting is permitted. However, the container size is determined by the size of the outer pot. 10. Classes may be subdivided at the discretion of the Classification Committee. 11. The Division will be judged by the Scale of Points on page in the 2007 edition of The Handbook for Flower Shows. 12. Horticulture References: a. Horticulture Division Awards Requirements for the National Garden Club Top Awards All plant material must be grown by the exhibiter. Exhibits must be a Blue Ribbon Winner scoring 95 or more. Exhibit must be properly named with correct botanical name (Genus and Species). There must be at least 3 classes in each section. There is no minimal number of exhibits required, except where the number would affect the number of exhibits required for a Standard Flower Show. The section and classes must be designated in the schedule for each award. An award must be withheld if none of the exhibits designated in the schedule meets the requirements. The Award of Horticultural Excellence (Division Award) 3

4 The Award of Horticulture Excellence may be awarded to the named exhibit as the finest in the entire Horticulture Division. All classes in the division are eligible. The exhibit may also have won a Top Exhibiter Award, however, a blue ribbon winner scoring 95 points or above in a section not offering a Top Exhibiter Award, is also eligible. The award is a rosette of green, orange and blue ribbons. Award of Merit: (Section Award Eligible Sections A, B, C, D, and E) The Award of Merit may be awarded to a named (as specified in the schedule) Blue ribbon winning exhibit of fresh plant material scoring 95 or above in each of the designated sections. No more than five may be offered and awarded in a Standard Flower Show. Classes in each eligible section must have a common characteristic such as family, genus, type of growth (e.g. vines) or growing conditions (e.g. container-grown). This award is represented by a rosette of orange ribbons. Growers Choice Award: (Section Award Eligible Sections F, G and H) The Growers Choice may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibits of container-grown plants and combination plantings. Three may be offered and awarded. Classes in each eligible section must have some common characteristic, e. g., flowering, container-grown etc. The Growers Choice Award is a rosette of dark green ribbons. Club Competition Award: (Section Award) This award is considered a Top Exhibiter Award. Classes will be a display of seven (or more) specimens. All Horticulture Top Exhibiter requirements must be met except the exhibit is created by several members of the competing club. Division I. Green with Envy Club Competition Award Eligible for the Club Competition Award and considered a Top Exhibiter Award. A minimum of four (4) exhibits is required. Must be pre-registered by Thursday, June 18th with Alaina Meister, A club entry. A display of 7 or more foliage-container-grown plants, each in its own container, artistically arranged and staged on a rectangular table with space 36 w. X 24 d. Table skirted in black with a white topper. All entries must be numbered in container with corresponding numbers and botanical names on a white 3 X 5 card with the exhibit. Design Division Rules All design entries: Must be pre-registered by Thursday, June 18, For reservations call Gerry Crouse, Early registration is suggested, as classes are limited. Entry cards will be prepared ahead of time by the Design Entries Chairman. Design Consultant, Mona Macksey

6 An exhibiter is permitted to make only one entry per class, but may enter as many classes as wished. Designs must be the work of one exhibiter. Plant material need not be grown by the exhibiter. If designer is unable to fulfill the assignment, a substitute must be provided. An emphasis must be put on fresh plant material. All exhibits must include some plant material, blooms, foliage, fruit and/or vegetables. Fresh plant material may be clipped, stripped, bent or otherwise manipulated. Dried material may be treated: fresh material is never colored or treated or embellished. No artificial plant material, cut fruit or perishable food is permitted. Accessories are permitted in all classes unless otherwise stated in the schedule. The exhibiter must supply his/her own background and underlay unless otherwise indicated in the schedule. Use of flatware in a functional or exhibition table is not permitted. National flags must be displayed in accordance with proper flag etiquette. American flags are not to be incorporated into any competitive designs, nor, be used as an underlay, swags or the like. Religious symbols must be treated respectfully and in accordance with policies of local religious organizations. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted in the Design Division. Living members of the Animal Kingdom are not permitted in the Design Division. Design and Flower Show Reference- Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007, published by the National Garden Club, Inc. Design Division Awards Requirements for National Garden Club Top Awards Exhibit must be a blue ribbon winner, either Creative or Traditional, scoring 95 points or above. Schedule must designate award s special requirements, classes eligible, and number of exhibits required per class There must be a minimum of at least three classes with four exhibits in each class. Judges must withhold award if no exhibits meet requirements. Award of Design Excellence: (Division Award) All general design requirements must be met. The Award of Design Excellence may be awarded to the design judged finest in the entire Design Division. Only one Award of Design Excellence may be offered and awarded per show. The winning exhibit may have also won another Top Exhibiter Design Award, but may be awarded to a blue ribbon winner 95 and above in a section where a Top Exhibiter Design Award was not offered. The award is a rosette of gold ribbons. Designer s Choice Award: (Section Award: Section A) Two awards (one per section) may be offered and awarded to the highest scoring exhibits if eligible sections/classes are designated in the schedule and all other General Design Award Requirements are met for each award offered. Exhibiter has complete freedom to choose plant materials and components within NGC policies. Schedule may specify design style (Creative or Traditional) or specific design type by name. The Designer s Choice Award is represented by a rosette of red, blue and yellow ribbons. Table Artistry Award: (Section Award: Section B.) Section Award for Functional and/or Exhibition Table Designs. All general award requirements must be met. Eligible classes permit designers choice of fresh and/or dried plant materials and other components. The Table Artistry is represented by a rosette of burgundy ribbons. Division II. Design Iridescent Mosaic Eligible for the Award of Design Excellence Design Consultant: Mona Macksey, Four entries required in each class. Section A. Images Eligible for the Designer s Choice Award Class 1. Stained Glass 6

7 A collage is an Abstract Creative Design in low relief created on a background panel with components bonded with glue or paste or otherwise attached to the panel. Collage to fill entire space, size 8 X 10. Staged on a tables covered in black with white toppers on an easel provided by the committee. Illusions An Op Art Abstract Creative design has implied visual motion and is considered a Kinetic design. Patterns and colors are arranged to force viewer s eyes to move back and forth quickly from one dynamic area to another. Designers choice of components and plant material. Staged on rectangular table covered in black with white topper. Space 36" w. X 24" d unlimited height. Class 3. Echoes of Light A Creative Reflective design containing materials that reflect, give back images of light or other components to the viewer. Designers choice of components and plant material. Staged on tables skirted in black with white toppers in front of glass windows. Space 36 w. X 24 d. X unlimited height. Background and underlay required. See HB p.207 Section B. Chasing Rainbows Four entries required in each class. Eligible for the Table Artistry Award Class 4. Smorgasbord of Symmetry An Exhibition Table Type II. Space 36 w. Must include a decorative unit suited to space. Staged on 20 round tables. White table covering provided by committee. Class 6. Blue Skies An informal functional dinner table for two. Decorative unit required. Staged on a 33 square table skirted in white with white topper. Additional table covering may be provided by exhibiter. Designer s choice of components and plant material Special Exhibits Awards Educational Top Exhibiter Awards: Awarded to the highest scoring exhibit if all other requirements are met. There must be a minimum of two educational exhibits designated as eligible. The winning exhibit must occupy a minimum of eighteen square feet of surface area. Division III. Special Exhibits Tourmaline Gems Section A. Educational Eligible for Educational Top Exhibitor Award Pearls of Wisdom Educational Consultant: Myra McClure, Educational exhibits may be the work of one or more persons. Each exhibit will be displayed on a rectangular table 72 l. X 24 d. X unlimited h. Table will be skirted in black with a white topper. Only fresh plant material may be used. Exhibits one and two are in competition and will be judged by the Scale of Points for Educational Exhibits. More than one member may create the display. See HB p.49 and judging, HB p.304. Exhibit 1. 8 1. Intended to stimulate gardening interest, photographic abilities and NGC objectives. 2. Schedule determines the type of photography, exhibit, staging and number of entries. All exhibits should relate to horticulture, gardening or other objectives of NGC. All images must be taken by exhibiter in the state of Ohio. Image size 5 X 7, single matted to finished size 8 X 10. Images to be matted on white. No frames permitted. Exhibitors are encouraged to name photographed plant material, if identifiable, with scientific names written on a 3 X 5 card and submitted with entry. The photo may be enhanced to include in-camera changes and post production changes, to include cropping and other filters and dark room techniques. First, second, third and honorable mention ribbons will be awarded in accordance with the NGC Standard System of Awarding. HB P Judging consideration shall include creativity, composition, technical merit/ quality of the image, conformance/ interpretation, distinction/ WOW factor. 4. Judging will be by Kohne s Camera photo experts of Perrysburg. 5. Not eligible for exhibiting credits or any NGC Top Exhibitor Award. 6. Images will be displayed vertically. 7. Images will be attached with Velcro to light blue background. Committee will provide. 8. Abstract Creative Design - is a design in which the designer selects, treats and or organizes plant materials and other components to create a non-naturalistic and non-realistic design. The design is non representational. Dried plant material may be abstracted with substances such as dye, paint, wax, polish, glitter etc. Interest is to be equated over entire design. 2. Collage may include any low relief fresh and/or dried plant material, other non-plant materials or found objects may be included in low relief. Apparent visual depth is obtained by changes in value, overlapping and juxtaposition of color pattern and/or texture. There must be a dominance of bonding and / or attaching of components 3. Exhibition Table Type II an artistic arrangement of table components, within an allotted space, to provide a creative effect without functional placement. All components must be suitable for a dining table. May not include a decorative unit but must include some plant material placed where needed to carry rhythm. 4. Op Art Design Optical Illusions, an abstract creative design having implied visual motion. Patterns and colors are arranged to force viewer s eyes to move back and forth quickly from one dynamic area to 8

9 another. This gives the illusion that color patterns move. Op art fabrics, paper and forms provide the optical illusion; therefore it is vital that plant material and other optional components be organized with simplicity and clarity. 5. Reflective Design- a creative design that contains materials that reflect, give back images of light or other components to the viewer. Reflective materials are an integral part of the design. Reflective materials may be shiny metal, plastic, paper, pieces of mirror etc. Refer o Flower Shoe Handbook for additional details. Horticulture Glossary Genius: closely related group of species, the first term in a binomial name. The first letter is capitalized and the entire name is italicized or underlined. Species: A subdivision of a genius. The second term in a binomial name printed or written in lower case letters and italicized or underlined. Cultivar: variety of a plant 6. Dish Garden/Fairy Garden a miniature landscape in an open container, in scale accessories may be added 7. Display An exhibit of at least five (5) specimens (seven (7) specimens for club competition) artistically staged by the exhibiter/(s). Judged equally for cultural perfection and artistic effect, yet plant material must dominate. Specimens in a display may consist of: one family e.g., Orcidaceae or Gesneriaceae, plants with like characteristics, e.g. ferns, different types of species within a genus or different cultivars within a genus or species. All specimens must be of equal and superior quality to receive a ribbon. The lowest scoring specimen will determine the highest ribbon possible. 8. Planter group of different plants growing together in a container for artistic effect. Not a landscape, no accessories permitted. Any type of container may be used. 9. Terrarium a miniature landscape in a closed transparent container. Accessories permitted but not cut plant material. See Flower Show Handbook for more details. Handbook available in the Forum house. 9
