3 General Rules 1. This is a Standard Flower staged according to the rules of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., (NGC) using as its authority the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2007 Revised Edition and any changes published in The National Gardener. (Referred to as FS Handbook.) 2. Design entries are open to members of the national garden Clubs, Inc. Horticulture entries are open to all amateur gardeners, except for Class 9, Polygonatum, Solomon s Seal, which is only open to CGCD Provisionals. An Exhibitor s Meeting will be held at The Art Complex Museum, 189 Alden Street, Duxbury, MA, Thursday April 13 at 1 pm. 3. Procedures for making entries varies by division and are listed under Division Rules. 4. Entries must be delivered to The Art Complex Museum, 189 Alden Street, Duxbury, MA on Thursday, May 11, See Division Rules for entry times. All entries must be removed on Saturday, May 13, 2017, between 4 pm and 5 pm. 5. Judging will begin at 9 am on Friday, May 12, Only required personnel will be allowed in the exhibit area during judging. These are: General Chairs, Judges Chair, Design Classifications Chair, Horticulture Classifications Chair, Awards Chair, Clerks Chair and Clerks. 7. Classifications Chairs will check for conformance to the schedule. 8. Decision of the judges is final. Awards may be withheld if not merited. 9. Plants listed in the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List are not permitted in any division. A current list may be found at Wild collected plants listed by the Massachusetts natural Heritage Program may not be used. Cultivated plant material appearing on the list may be used if exhibitor provides a card noting that such material has not been wild collected. 11. Emphasis is on fresh plant material. No artificial plant material is allowed in any division. 12. The show committee will endeavor to protect all exhibits but cannot be responsible for loss or damage to the exhibitor s property. Standard System of Awards Individual exhibits are judged using the NGC Standard System of Awarding: Scales of Points are based on perfection (100 points) (FS Handbook pp. 5-7). one first place (scoring 90 points or above, Blue Ribbon), one second place (scoring 85 points or above, Red Ribbon), one third place (scoring 80 points or above, Yellow Ribbon), and one or more Honorable Mentions (scoring 75 points or above, White Ribbon). Scales of Points for exhibits in each division are found in the FS Handbook pp , including updates published in the National Gardner. 3
4 National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC) Awards Horticulture Division NGC Top Awards Award of Horticultural Excellence, a rosette of green, orange, and blue ribbons, may be given to the highest scoring 95 plus blue ribbon winner in the Horticulture Division. (FS Handbook pg. 43) Winners of the Awards of Merit, Arboreal Awards and Grower s Award are eligible. Award of Merit, a rosette of orange ribbons, may be given for the highest scoring 95 plus blue ribbon winner in Sections A, B, and C. One award may be given in each section (minimum four classes per section), for a maximum of three awards, (FS Handbook pg. 43) Arboreal Award, a rosette of green ribbons in two shades, may be given for the highest scoring 95 plus blue ribbon winner in Sections D, E, F, and G. One award may be given in each section (minimum four classes per section), for a maximum of four awards. (FS Handbook pp ) Grower s Choice Award, a rosette of dark green ribbons, may be given to the highest scoring 95 plus blue ribbon winner in Section H (four classes per section). (FS Handbook pg. 45) Design Division NGC Top Awards Award of Design Excellence, a rosette of gold ribbons, may be given to the highest scoring 95 plus blue ribbon winner in the Design Division. (FS Handbook pp ) CGCD Award Lulie Finley Award, a rosette of yellow and green ribbons, may be given in the Design Division to an exhibit of great beauty, using predominantly fresh plant material. Show General Chairs determine winner. All design entries are eligible, except for exhibits submitted by General Chairs. 4
5 Division I Horticulture Woodland s Natural Beauty Horticulture Rules In addition to the General Rules, the following rules apply: 1. Horticulture entries do not require advance registration 2. Horticulture entries will be accepted at The Art Complex Museum, Duxbury, MA at 9 am to 11:30 am on Thursday, May 11, All plant material must be fresh and have been grown by the exhibitor. Cut annuals, biennials, and perennials must have been in exhibitor s possession from seeds, cuttings, or immature plants and grown to maturity. Bulbous blooms must have been in exhibitor s possession from planting of bulb, tuber, corm, rhizome or it must have been cared for as a mature plant for at least 90 days. Container grown plants must have been in the exhibitor s possession for at least 90 days. 4. Container-grown plants may not exceed 8 diameter/diagonal. Double potting is allowed. 5. Entry cards may be obtained at the Exhibitors Meeting, at the May General Meeting and at check-in time. Entry cards must be completed with correct scientific (botanical) names or the currently accepted scientific identifications to be considered for a Top Exhibitor Award. Botanical name is binomial - genus and species. If possible, entry cards should be filled out in advance in pencil. 6. Exhibitor may have more than one entry in each class, if each is a different species, variety, type, cultivar, or color. Committee may sub-divide classes. 7. Plant material may not be altered by the application of oil, commercial shine products, etc. that may artificially change the color and/or texture. 8. Containers for all cut specimens will be provided by the committee. Cut specimens may not have any foliage below the water line. Wedging material, provided by committee is permitted. 9. Entries will be reviewed by Horticulture Entry Chair and cards initialed before placement. 10. Horticulture entries will be judged by the appropriate Scale of Points found in the FS Handbook pp

Container-grown foliage plants Class 38. Container-grown succulents Division II Design Creations Design Rules In addition to the General Rules, the following rules apply: 1. Design entries require advance registration using Sign-Up Genius (SUG) or contacting the Design Entries Chair. Class 1, Art, is only open to novices, first-time exhibitors in a competitive NGC flower show. 2. Some plant must be used in every exhibit. Plant material in Class 2 must be dry. Plant material in Classes 3 and 5 is Designer s Choice - fresh and/or dried. Fresh plant material in Classes 1 and 4 must dominate, but dried plant material is allowed. 3. Design entries for Classes 1,2,4, and 5 may be made at home or in the show area. Space will be provided outside the library for preparation of Class 2, Literature and then exhibitor will install in library. Designs must be installed at The Art Complex Museum, Duxbury MA on Thursday, May 11, noon to 2 pm. 4. Design entries for Class 3 must be made in the show area. Inspiration and materials will be available to view at 1 pm, Thursday May 11. Installation will be between 2 pm and 4 pm, May Each exhibit is to be the work of a single exhibitor. Exhibitor s name must appear on the entry card. 6. An exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired, but only one entry per class 7. Plant material used in designs need not be grown by the exhibitor. 8. No artificial flowers, foliage, fruits or vegetables are permitted. 9. Fresh plant material may not be treated in any manner. 10. Landscapes or scenes are not permitted. 11. An entry card listing all plant material (common names) must be given to and initialed by the Design Classification Chair before the exhibitor leaves the show area. 8
9 12. Design entries will be judged by the Scale of Points found in the FS Handbook pg. 303, revised with scale of points effective 1/1/15, as published in The National Gardener. 13. Registered designers must provide a substitute if unable to participate Four entries per class Design Classes Pedestal color for Classes 2,3,4, and 5 is Benjamin Moore HC 96, Richmond Gray. Class 3 is staged in front of a wall painted Benjamin Moore 991, Grege Avenue. Class 1. Art Novice Class - Traditional or Creative: Line, Line-Mass, or Mass Design Use the Tiffany Stained Glass window in the Phoenix Room as inspiration. Open only to first-time exhibitors in a competitive NGC show. Fresh plant material dominates. Dried plant material may be used. Staged on a pedestal 36 H X 16 square top. Design may not extend beyond pedestal top. Design will be judged from the front. Class 2. Literature Traditional or Creative: Line, Line-Mass, or Mass Design- Use the library as inspiration. Plant material must be dried. Staged on a 12 X 12 off-white ceramic tile. Underlay, not to extend beyond tile, may be used. Design may not extend beyond tile.tiles will be placed on dark blue top of bookcases 42 H. Design will be judged from the front but may be viewed from all sides. Class 3. Sculpture Challenge Class Freedom of Style Design - Use the Wood as Muse exhibit as inspiration. (Inspiration may come from exhibit as a whole, from a single artist, or a specific piece of work. A statement of intent on a 3 x 5 card is allowed.) Plant material, containers, and oasis will be provided by the committee. Designers must provide their own tools and mechanics. Staged on a pedestal 41 H X 20 W X 16.5 D. Design may extend 2 beyond pedestal on sides and in front. Design will be judged from the front. Class 4. Music and Dance Creative Multi-Rhythmic Design inspired by Music or Dance. A musical instrument may be incorporated in the design. Fresh plant material dominates. Dried plant material may be used. Staged on a pedestal 30.5 H X 20 diameter. Design may not extend beyond the pedestal. Design will be judged from the front, but may be viewed from all sides. Class 5. Architecture Creative Construction Design Use the museum building as inspiration. Designers Choice of fresh and/or dried plant material. Staged on a pedestal 36 H X 18 square top. Design may extend 2 beyond pedestal on all sides. Judged from the front, but may be viewed from all sides. 9
