4 GENERAL RULES AND INFORMATION 1. This show will comply in every respect with the requirements for a NGC Flower Show as established by National Garden Clubs, Inc., the 2017 Edition of the Handbook for Flower Shows and the handbook revisions as published in The National Gardener and on the NGC, Inc. website will be the final authority. 2. All National Garden Club members and friends may enter any or all sections of the Horticulture and/or Botanical Arts Divisions. Please enter by calling the appropriate division entries Chair. 3. Entries will be received on Monday, Oct. 22, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. Judging will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Classification Chair for each division will check exhibits for conformity to the schedule prior to judging. Final determination for conformance is the judges responsibility. 4. The General Chair and the Classification Chair for each division are available during judging for possible consultations. They, along with the judges and clerks, are the only personnel allowed on the floor during judging. 5. The decisions of the judges are final. Awards may be withheld if NOT merited. 6. There must be an emphasis on FRESH plant material. No artificial plant material is permitted in any exhibit in any division. 7. Each exhibitor is limited to one entry per class, except in the Horticulture Division and the Botanical Arts Horticulture Section. 8. The Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. and Bavarian Inn Lodge will strive to ensure the safety of all items after arrival and placement. However, they are not responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits. 9. Judging will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 22, 2018 by National Garden Clubs, Inc. Accredited Judges. 10. Plant material on the States conservation plant list grown by the exhibitor or obtained in a legal manner and so identified is allowed. 11. To locate a list of endangered, threatened, and related plants in your state, log onto the US Department of Natural Resources (below) and click on your state in upper right corner ( This will take you to your state where you can search (in the box in upper right corner) for such species in your state. 12. Exhibitors are responsible for reserving space in Division I Horticulture Sections C & D, and Division III Botanical Arts Section C Photography. If unable to exhibit, please notify the General Chair immediately. 13. Exhibits must be removed after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, All photography and other recording media will be the property of Central Region. A sheet will be available for the exhibitor s signature when entering the exhibits. 2
5 AWARDS The National Garden Clubs, Inc. Standard System of Awards will be used for all competitive judging. Only one first place (blue) ribbon, one second place (red) ribbon, one third place (yellow) ribbon will be awarded if merited in each class or subclass. Ribbons will be awarded as follows: Blue ribbon 90 points or above, Red ribbon 85 points or above, Yellow ribbon 80 points or above. One or more Honorable Mention (white) ribbon scoring 75 points or above may be awarded. Judges will sign, date and write 90+, if merited. Top Awards will be placed provided all General and Horticultural Division Rules have been met and scored 95 or above. Top National Awards & Local Awards Award of Horticultural Excellence A Division Award of a rosette of green, orange and blue ribbons. One may be awarded to the correctly named blue ribbon exhibit judged to be the finest exhibit in the entire Horticultural Division in sections where Top Exhibitor Awards have been placed, only those winners are eligible for consideration. Division I- Horticulture; Sections A, B, C, D; all classes eligible. Arboreal Award A Section Award of a rosette of green ribbons. One award may be awarded to a correctly named blue ribbon exhibit of fresh plant material in each designated section of plants having a common characteristic. Eligible Division I- Horticulture; Section A, Classes 1-4. Grower s Choice Award A Section Award of a rosette of dark green ribbons may be awarded to a correctly named blue ribbon exhibit of fresh plant material in each designated section of plants having a common characteristic. 3 awards: Eligible Division I- Horticulture; Section B, Classes 5-8 & Section C, Classes 9-11 & Section D; Classes Educational Award A Division Award represented by a rosette of brown and white may be awarded to the highest scoring educational exhibit in Division II; Education; Exhibits 1-3. Botanical Arts Horticulture Award A Section Award represented by a rosette of light brown ribbons. Two awards may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in Botanical Arts Horticulture Award, Division III, Section A, Classes 1-3 and Section B, Classes 4a, 4b, 4c, 5a, 5b, 5c, & 6. Botanical Arts Photography Award A Section Award represented by a rosette of black and white ribbons may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in Division III, Botanical Arts Photography; Section C, Classes
6 DIVISION I HORTICULTURE HORTICULTURE RULES All Horticulture must be in place by 1:00 p.m., October 22, The NGC Exhibit Policies are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows 2017, Chapter 6, Exhibiting in the Horticulture Division. 2. All plant material must be fresh and have been grown by the exhibitor. Cut specimens of arboreal must have been in exhibitor s possession from seeds, cutting or immature plants and grown to maturity. Bulbous blooms must have been in exhibitor s possession from planting of bulb, tuber, corm, rhizome or it must have been cared for as a mature plant at least 90 days. 3. Container grown plants must have been in exhibitor s possession at least 90 days. Exceptions: Multiple and combination plantings must have been grown together and in exhibitor s possession at least six weeks. 4. In order to receive an NGC Top Exhibitor Award, the exhibitor must identify her/his entry by its binomial name or currently acceptable scientific designation. 5. Wedging material may be used in the neck of the container to hold the specimen upright. Limited wedging material will be available until gone. 6. Specimens to be staged in clear glass or plastic containers. Some containers will be available to use. 7. Container-grown plants should be displayed in clean containers and their size in good proportion to the size of the plant. Container-grown plants may be double potted. 8. Entries must be clean, well-groomed, and free of insects and diseases. The Horticulture and Placement chairmen may remove specimens with insects or diseases. No wiring, oiling, leaf shine, artificial coloring or any other artificial enhancement is allowed. 9. If a plant is considered a flowering plant, it should be exhibited as a flowering specimen. Foliage plants may flower, but should be exhibited as foliage plant if they are grown for their leaves. 10. Specimens with a class designation in the schedule may not be entered in the Any Other Worthy class. 11. Entry cards are available before the show from the Horticulture Entries Chair or the General Chair. 12. Exhibitors are to provide information on the entry cards including name, address, garden club, entry class and name of entry. 13. An exhibitor may enter more than one exhibit per class if each entry is a different genus, species, variety, cultivar, type, form, size, or color. 14. All entries must be checked by the HORTICULTURE CLASSIFICATION COMMITTEE. The Chair of this committee reserves the right to make necessary changes in the entry s placement in classes and subclasses. 15. Classes may be subdivided into sub classes at the discretion of the Classification Chair. There should be several exhibits, usually three (3) or more of botanically identical (variety, cultivar, series, or trademarked name) or similar in form, color, size or description to justify forming a subclass. 4
7 DIVISION I HORTICULTURE Horticulture is always Wandering to Michigan Eligible for the Award of Horticultural Excellence. All classes to be staged on tables covered with white clothes on tiered levels. May be subdivided by type or species if enough warranted. Eligible for the Arboreal Award Section A: Beauty of Trees in Michigan Class 1: Broadleaf evergreens. One stem, (Cut specimens must be no more than 30 in length, include an apical tip, center leader and several (nodes). May be subdivided by type or species if enough warranted. Class 2: Needled evergreens. One stem or spray, (Cut specimens must be no more than 30 in length, include an apical tip, center leader and several nodes). May be subdivided by type or species if enough warranted. Class 3: Petite broadleaf evergreens. One stem or spray (Specimens no longer than 18 from cut end to apical tip, and contain several nodes). May be subdivided by type or species if enough warranted. Class 4: Petite needled evergreens. One stem or spray (Specimens no longer than 18 from cut end to apical tip, and contain several nodes). May be subdivided by type or species if enough warranted. Eligible for the Grower s Choice Award Section B: Wandering Indoors A single species grown in a container. More than one plant of the species may be exhibited in the container as a single, such as self-multiple (multiple plants arising from the root system) or multiple plantings (more than one plant of the same cultivar and color are combined in the container to improve the overall appearance of the planting.) Container not to exceed 12" dia. Class 5: Foliage container-grown plants Class 6: Flowering container-grown plants Class 7: Cactus Class 8: Succulent 5
8 Eligible for Grower s Choice Award Section C: Wandering through Hanging Garden Hanging containers (Container no larger than 10 dia.) Each plant must be listed on the entry tag or on an index card (Pre registration required). (See description in Section D for Combination Plantings.) Naturalistic accessories permitted in all combination plantings but must be in scale with plantings and container, and theme appropriate to the plants. Each plant must be listed on the entry tag or on an index card. (Pre registration required). Class 13: Terrariums A miniature landscape in a container with high transparent sides. The top may be closed or open, such as a small conservatory or greenhouses, bottle gardens, fish bowls, tanks, or other types of covered glass cases. (Container no larger than 10 dia.) Class 14: Planters Container no larger than 12 dia. A group of plants grown in an indoor or outdoor container. 6

10 Eligible for the Educational Award DIVISION II: EDUCATION Wandering in Michigan Section A Wandering through Education in Michigan Educational Exhibits may be the work of more than one (1) individual or organization. However, if a Student Judge or Accredited Judge is seeking exhibiting credit, the work must be done solely by the individual and entered accordingly. Plant material is not required, although NGC encourages the use of plant material where appropriate. No artificial plant material is permitted in Educational Exhibits. Exhibits must occupy 18 square feet, staged on six (6) foot tables. (Covered with white cloth). 11 DIVISION III Botanical Arts Wandering Michigan for the Fall Explosion of Color Section A - Horticulture - Arboreal We Wander to see Autumn s Offerings Eligible for the Botanical Arts Horticulture Award Exhibits must be correctly named by the binomial or currently accepted scientific designation. Fall color - trees and shrubs with recognized natural fall color interest; the majority of leaves should be firmly attached. Naturally large branches Specimens which do not show the beauty of mature form with the 30 limit allowed for normal specimens. Schedule may set maximum limits on length such as 36, 42, 48, etc. Provided there is space for staging. Judged by the Horticulture Scale of Points. Classes may be subdivided by type or species if enough warranted.. Class 1: Arboreal Fall Color Trees (Cut specimens must be no more than 30 length, include an apical tip, center leader and several nodes.) Class 2: Arboreal Fall Color Shrubs (Cut specimens must be no more than 30 in length, include an apical tip, center leader and several nodes.) Class 3: Naturally Large Branches (Cut specimens, maximum limit length 42.) Section B: - Horticulture - Dried and Preserved Specimens We Wander to See Nature s Preservation Eligible for the Botanical Arts Horticulture Award Exhibit must be correctly named by its binomial or currently accepted scientific designation. No additional embellishments (dyes, glitter, spray paint or manipulation such as cutting or twisting) permitted. Materials such as Petal-Proof, Super Surface Sealer or hairspray are permitted to prevent shattering of fragile seed heads, etc. Classes may be subdivided by type or species if enough warranted. Class 4: Cones 4a: Cones Large: over 5 (1 cone) 4b: Cones Medium: 1 5 (3 cones) 4c: Cones Small under 1 (5 cones) Class 5: Gourds: 5a: 1 large over 8 diameter 5b: 2 medium 4 8 diameter 5c: 3 small 1 4 diameter Class 6: Grasses 3 stems with dried heads 9
12 Section C: Photography Wandering to the Central Region in Pictures Eligible for the Botanical Arts Photography Award Four entries or more in each class staged on white board provided by committee. Cards of explanation are encouraged and plant identified if possible. Professional printing and matting is permitted. Exhibitors are encouraged to label photographed plant material, preferably with current scientific designation. Photo may be enhanced by the exhibitor with cropping, filters, adjustments and/or darkroom techniques. Images with extreme manipulation may be displayed in a specific class/es. Not eligible for exhibiting credits. To be judged by panel of two (2) professional photographer experts and one NGC, Inc. flower show judge. May be subdivided by Classification Committee.
