3 General Rules 1. This is a Standard Flower Show with divisions in Horticulture, Design and Special Exhibits. The National Garden Clubs (NGC) Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2007, will be used as an authority on all points not covered in this schedule. It may hereafter be referred to as the Handbook or HB. 2. Emphasis in all Divisions is on fresh plant material, which is never treated. Only dried plant material may be treated. No artificial plant materials are to be used. 3. Classes in Horticulture and Design are open to any member affiliated with VFGC, Inc. Youth Special Exhibits are open to the general public. 4. All entries will be accompanied by completed NGC Exhibit cards in waterproof ink. The use of a preprinted address label is acceptable. NGC Exhibit cards to be provided by the Flower Show Chairmen. They will be received Friday, May 12 between 9 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Entries are to be removed on Saturday, May 13 between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. All entries except Special Exhibits are to be the work of one exhibitor. Entries in the Design Division and Special Exhibit Division must be pre-registered with their respective chairmen and container-grown plants must be pre-registered with the Horticulture Entries Chairman. 5. Judging will take place on Friday, May 12 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Judges are to sign exhibitor cards for any entries that have won a blue ribbon or awarded a 90+. Judges are encouraged to comment on exhibits awarded other than a blue ribbons. The decision of the judges is final. Awards may be withheld if not merited. 6. The National Garden Club, Inc. standard System of Awards (HB pgs. 5-6) will be used for judging all divisions. Any award in any division will be withheld if not merited 7. The Flower Show Chairmen, the Horticulture Classification Chairman and the Clerks will remain present during judging. 8. Horticulture, Design and Special Exhibits Chairmen will check to see that all entries conform to the schedule and may disqualify entries that do not conform. 9. The Committee will exercise all reasonable care, but will not be responsible for damage, loss or personal injury. 10. Use of Virginia s Native Plants on the Virginia Conservation List is permitted if grown by the exhibitor and so stated. Refer to HB page for the plant list.

4 NGC Awards Offered Division I Horticulture The completely and correctly named blue ribbon winner determined by all judges who judged in the Division to be the highest scoring exhibit will be awarded the Award of Horticultural Excellence, described on HB pg. 43. It is a rosette of green, orange and blue ribbons. The Sweepstakes Award, described on HB pg. 54, will be given to the exhibitor winning the most blue ribbons in the entire Horticulture Division. It is a rosette of green and white ribbons. The Award of Merit, described on HB pg. 43, will be awarded to five (5) of the completely and correctly named blue ribbon winners determined in Sections A,B,C,D and H of the Horticulture Division. It is a rosette of orange ribbons. The Arboreal Award, described on HB pg. 43, will be awarded to two (2) of the completely and correctly named blue ribbon winners determined in Section E and F. It is a rosette of green ribbons in two shades. The Growers Choice Award, described on HB pg. 45, will be awarded to one (1) of the completely and correctly named blue ribbon winner determined in Section G. It is a rosette of green ribbons. Division II Design The highest scoring exhibit in the entire Division entered by a single exhibitor will be awarded the Award of Design Excellence, described on HB pg. 45. It is a rosette of gold ribbons. Section A is eligible for the Tricolor Award, described on HB pg. 46. It is a rosette of red, blue and yellow ribbons. Section B is eligible for the Designer s Choice Award, described on HB pg. 47. It is a rosette of purple ribbons. Section C is eligible for the Petite Award, described on HB pg. 49. It is a small rosette of blue and white ribbons. The Francis Fauquier Garden Club Perpetual trophy will be awarded to the Design exhibit that best captures the theme, A Garden Tea Party, Somewhere in Time. DIVISION III Special Exhibits The Educational Top Exhibitor Award, described on HB pg. 49, will be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in Section A. It is a rosette of brown and white ribbons. The Youth Top Exhibitor Award, described on HB pg. 51, will be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in Section B. It is a rosette of red, white and blue ribbons.

5 Horticulture Rules 1. All plant material must be fresh and not altered by any commercial product. All plant material, except combination plantings HB pg. 84, must have been grown by the exhibitor for no fewer than 90 days. Combination plantings must have been in the exhibitor s possession and growing together no fewer than six weeks. 2. In the Horticulture Division the entries will first be accepted by Classification; second, recorded by Entries and third, placed by Placement. The Horticulture Classification Chairman has the authority to subdivide classes if necessary. Exhibitors may enter more than one specimen in a class or subclass if each specimen is a different genus, species, variety, cultivar, color or type. All exhibits will be judged using the Scale of Points, HB pg Each NGC Exhibit card is to be labelled by genus, species and/or variety. Common names may also be given. 4. Cut specimens must be displayed in a clear, colorless glass bottle (provided by exhibitor) in proportion to size of the specimen. The bottle should have no lettering or etching. The specimen stem must be visible for judging with no foliage below the water line. A specimen is one bloom, spray, cluster, stalk, stem, branch, truss or a container-grown plant. 5. Type of wedging to be used is bubble wrap or plastic wrap. The wedging should be inconspicuous. 6. Sections E and F Specimens must be no longer than 30 from cut to atypical tip and have several nodes. 7. Section G- Exhibitors must pre-register with the Horticulture Chair, Jamie Nick (703) , no later than May 5, The container is considered part of the plants culture and must conform to HB pg It is the exhibitor s choice, but should be plain and unadorned and a maximum of 14 wide or tall (inside measurement). Staking and double potting are permitted; however, inner pot must not be seen. No hanging exhibits are allowed due to staging considerations; if there is a trailing plant, exhibitors should provide a riser as plant should not rest on or below the table surface.

8 Design Rules 1. Advanced registration is required by all exhibitors. Please register with Entries Chairman, Kathy Mercier (540) by May 5, If an exhibitor is unable to enter, a substitute must be provided by the exhibitor and the Entries Chairman notified no later than May 10, In the Design Division, the entries will first be recorded by Entries, second, directed by Placement and third, accepted by Classification. 3. Section A Designs eligible for the Tricolor Award must be all fresh plant material. No artificial or dried material is allowed. 4. Accessories are permitted in all Design sections. Please refer to HB pg for guidance for additional requirements of the Design Division. Exhibitors will not be able to use electricity. Battery operated mechanics are allowed if supplied by the exhibitor. 5. Each class will have four (4) entries. Exhibitor may enter more than one class, but only one exhibit per class. All plant materials must be listed on a 3 x 5 card, provided by exhibitor. 6. Staging for classes 1,2,3,4 and 5 will be on tables covered with floor length white cloths provided by the Committee. Classes are to be staged in front of a background panel and an underlay, provided by the exhibitor. Space allowed: width 36, depth 24. Please refer to HB pgs Class 6 (Tables) Exhibitor to furnish their own table and table coverings. Maximum size for table is 36 in diameter. Floor-length tablecloths are permitted. 8. Classes 7 (Petites) will be exhibited on an existing mantle, depth not to exceed 7. Classes 8 and 9 staging to be supplied by the Flower Show Committee. 10 1. Exhibitors must pre-register with the Special Exhibits Chairman, Pam Iten (540) Deadline for registering is May 1, All General Rules for the flower show will apply. 2. The Educational Exhibits are designed to instruct the public of the goals and objectives of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The Youth exhibit is open to anyone under the age of These exhibits will be displayed on the rear porch of the Mosby Museum if weather permits. Otherwise, the exhibits will be displayed in the Museum area of the building. 4. Each Educational exhibit must occupy a minimum of 18 sq. ft. surface area. Background, side panels and table surface are included in that measurement. The exhibitor has the choice to stage the exhibit on a rectangle, white skirted table furnished by the Committee or on the porch floor. 5. The Youth Special Exhibit must occupy only six (6) square feet of surface area. 6. The use of fresh plant material is encouraged. Handouts are encouraged but not required. 7. These exhibits will be judged using the Scale of Points for Educational Exhibits. HB pg Section A Educational Exhibits DIVISION III SPECIAL EXHIBITS A Treasured Legacy Eligible for the Educational Top Exhibitor Award Exhibit 1. Designing and Creating a Classic Centerpiece This exhibit describes how members of FFGC use mechanics, containers, design concepts and techniques using NGC guidelines to create a traditional mass centerpiece. Exhibit 2. Understanding Flower Show Ribbons Section B Youth Exhibits Everyone loves to earn ribbons! This exhibit is designed to show the general public the awards that are available to NGC flower show participants. Eligible for the Youth Top Exhibition Award Exhibit 1. Trees of Fauquier County Ever wonder about the trees around you? This exhibit will explore the trees around Fauquier County both native and non-native. Learn about trees by collecting leaves and identifying the Genus and species.
