1 DRAFT SHOW TITLE: JERSEY BLOOMS DIVISION I - Horticulture: NJ The Garden State This division is named after beautiful and educational gardens in NJ - so many to visit! All classes in this Division are eligible for the Award of Horticultural Excellence and the Millija Lovett Horticultural Award. SECTION A - RUTGERS GARDENS, NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ CONTAINER-GROWN FLOWERING PLANTS Eligible for Grower s Choice Award Flowers must be in bloom Class 1 - Orchid (Orchid) - One plant per container, container not to exceed 12 in diameter Class 2 - Saintpaulia (African Violet) - One plant per container, container not to exceed 12 in diameter Class 3 - Any Other Container-Grown Flowering Plant a. Container under 6 in diameter b. Container 6 to 12 in diameter SECTION B - WICK HOUSE HERB GARDEN, MORRISTOWN, NJ COMBINATION PLANTINGS Eligible for Grower s Choice Award Combination plantings must have been grown together and in the exhibitor s possession for at least six weeks. Minimum of three plants required, a 4 x 6 card required to diagram and list binomial plant names. Staging determined by Committee. All classes viewed from the front. Class 4 - A Planter of All Foliage Plants A planter with a minimum of three plants grown primarily for foliage. Not a landscape, accessories not permitted. Container, provided by the exhibitor, maximum of 16 in diameter. No height restriction. Class 5 - A Dish Garden of Cacti and/or Succulents A miniature landscape with a minimum of three compatible plants growing together in an open container, provided by exhibitor, staged on a 12 square table space. Accessories permitted. Class 6 - A Dish Garden of Foliage and/or Flowering Plants A miniature landscape with a minimum of three compatible plants growing together in an open container, provided by exhibitor, staged on a 12 square table space. Accessories permitted. Class 7 - A Terrarium A miniature landscape with a minimum of three compatible plants growing together in a transparent container, provided by exhibitor, staged on a 15 square table space. Accessories permitted. Plant list and diagram required on a 4 x 6 card. a. WTGC Challenge Class (PENDING) - various plants provided by WTGC at workshop in March (container provided by exhibitor). b. Includes needled and broadleaf specimens. Class 28 - Buxus (Boxwood) Class 29 - Ilex (Holly) - Unfruited Class 30 - Juniperus (Juniper) Class 31 - Pinus (Pine) Class 32 - Any Other Evergreen, Needled or Broadleaf Division II. Design Favorite Places, Famous Faces All Design Classes are eligible for the Award of Design Excellence & the Mari Epley Award. SECTION A - FAVORITE NJ DINING SPOT (HB pgs ) Eligible for Table Artistry Award Consultant: Joan Naro Contact: (609) Class 1 - Newark - NJ s Largest City Famous for its ironbound district, this city is renowned for its Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Brazilian restaurants.
4 A Functional Table for TWO (HP pgs ) Pick a cuisine and manner of dining (informal, semiformal or alfresco) and stage on a card table, supplied by Committee, measuring 36 square, 30 from the floor. Table must be covered by the exhibitor, no overhang limit. Table will be against a neutral colored wall. Viewed from the front. Designer s choice of plant material and other components. A floral design unit is required. The type of restaurant should be noted on the index card. Class 2 - An Afternoon Tea There are many favorite small towns in NJ two that bring many tourists are only a 20 to 30 minute drive from West Trenton: Lambertville, founded in 1705 and Flemington, founded in Both of these historical locations have unique shopping and interesting restaurants. An Informal Functional Tray for One, (HB pg. 218) tray to be provided by the exhibitor, placed in allowable space 24 wide x 30 in depth. A floral design unit is required. All entries will be staged on a table with top covered in white and skirted to the floor in blue, table height is 29 from the floor. Viewed from the front. Designer s choice of plant material and other components. Class 3 - Jersey Diners Everyone loves a diner! According to a vacation website, New Jersey has the largest concentration of diners in the country more than 600 spread out around towns and cities throughout the state. An Exhibition Table, Type I, (HB pg. 216) innovatively staged on a white covered table, skirted in blue, in front of a white niche (tri-fold display board) supplied by committee, design placed in an allowable space 33 wide x 24 deep x 36 in height. Design may incorporate niche and niche may be covered, underlays are permitted. Must include a decorative unit. Viewed from the front. Designer s choice of plant material and other components. Include the name/and or location of your favorite diner on your 4 x 6 card. SECTION B - EXPLORING THE STATE Eligible for Designer s Choice Award Consultant: Iliana Okum Contact: (609) Class 4 - Famous New Jerseyans Famous NJ Natives (past or present), there are so many...from entertainers, athletes, politicians to scientists and authors. Pick one and tell their story. Still Life Design, (HP pg. 209) staged on a white covered table, skirted in blue, 30 H, space allotted 33 W x 30 D. Background panel and underlay, if used, provided by designer, no height restrictions. Viewed from front. Designer s choice of plant material and other components. Class 5 - Liberty State Park With dramatic views of the Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Liberty State Park and its amenities draw four million guests a year. A Design (freedom of style) staged on a white pedestal 33 high with an 11 square top, provided by the Committee, in front of a neutral colored wall. Design space should not exceed 3 wide x 3 deep x 7 high. Underlays are permitted and may hang beyond pedestal surface. Viewed from the front. Designer s choice of plant material and other components. Class 6 - Jersey Shore - NJ s Crown Jewel What is your favorite beach destination? With 130 miles of coastline, spanning from Sandy Hook to Cape May, it is hard to choose. An Underwater Design, (HB pg. 212) staged on a white covered table, skirted in
5 blue, 30 H, space allotted 30 W x 30 D. Background panel and underlay provided by designer, no height restrictions. Designer s choice of plant materials and other components. Viewed from front. SECTION C: GEORGE SLEPT HERE Consultant: Contact: Class 7 - NJ - Crossroads of the American Revolution NJ played a key role in the American Revolution. General George Washington spent more of the war in NJ than any other state, with more battles fought here (including Monmouth, Princeton and Trenton) than anywhere else. A Traditional Miniature Design (HB pgs ) no more than 5 in height, width and depth to be staged in a niche supplied by the Committee (6 wide x 6 deep x 6 high). Niche may be covered. Staged on a white-topped, blue-skirted table, 29 from floor, topped with a shelf (18 high). Designer s choice of plant material and other components. Division III. Embellish a Shoe using fresh and/or dried plant materials and other components staged on ¼ of a white-topped, blue skirted 60 round table, 29 from floor. Underlay may be used. Class 2 - Victorian Weekend in Cape May! Every October, Cape May celebrates its Victorian heritage with historic house tours, murder mystery dinners, living history programs, lectures, workshops, performances and more. Many dress for the occasion. Create or Embellish a Hat using fresh and/or dried plant material and other components staged on a hat stand provided by committee. Stand, 12 high, will be placed on ¼ of a white-topped, blue skirted 60 round table 29 from. Class 3 - Scrap It - A Favorite NJ Memory So many vacations, annual events and celebrations, right here in NJ, pick a favorite and scrap it. Create and embellish a Scrap Book Page, 12 x!2, using botanical materials. One or two photographs may be added which depict an event, celebration or favorite place in NJ. Page should be mounted on 12 x 12 cardboard by exhibitor. Will be displayed on an easel supplied by committee and staged on ¼ of a white-topped, blue skirted 60 round table 29 from floor. Add NJ Event/Location to the 3 x 5 card. SECTION B - NJ - PICTURE PERFECT PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT

7 Exhibit 1 - Butterflies and BeeGAP Project A Garden Club of NJ project that introduces native bee awareness and shows way to increase our pollinator population. The decline of the honey bee population has become critical. This display, created by Jeannie Geremia, key champion for this cause, will show us ways to create pollinator friendly habitats for bees and butterflies in every yard, garden, park and community in our state. Exhibit 2 - Think NJ-Green - The Ewing Green Team The Ewing Township Sustainable Green Team is composed of a group of concerned Ewing residents dedicated to building a sustainable community in Ewing Township. This display shows the accomplishments of this group and what is planned for the future. SECTION E - ENJOYING LIFE IN NJ SPONSORED GROUPS & COMMERCIAL EXHIBITS Eligible for Award of Appreciation, Non-Competitive Open to the residents/participants of the, Inc. sponsored by the West Trenton Garden Club (Garden Therapy Committee).
