4 ARTISTIC CLASSES Class #1 A Royal Bouquet - Flower Arrangement Make a bouquet fit for a queen! Design a fantastic floral arrangement of flowers or fruit that could be presented to the House of Orange, the Royal Family of the Netherlands. Make a floral bouquet or arrangement (try to include some orange flowers) in a container of your choice. You may include accessories. Class #2 Dutch Folklore - Crafty Creatures Dutch literature is rich with mythical creatures like trolls, mermaids, fairies and griffins. Create a mystical crafty creature or choose a real animal to model. Make sure to identify your creation. Use only natural materials such as pine cones, twigs, seeds, etc. Your sculpture will be more stable and easier to handle if you attach it to a base of cardboard with glue. Class #3 The Crown Jewels - Wearable Art Jewelry has been used to mark royal occasions like weddings, coronations and state events. Design a royal crown or tiara, dramatic necklace, bracelet or earrings to impress the foreign dignitaries. Or make a shiny belt buckle that can be worn at the opening of Parliament. Remember to use natural materials: seeds, twigs, parts of plants, dried fruits or vegetables or other things that grow and are dried. Paint your creation to make the pearls look like gold, silver, or pearls. Class #4 Head to Toe Fashion: Hat Design Dutch women traditionally wear a hat called a volendam and the brixton is a common men s hat in the Netherlands. Decorate a traditional Dutch hat or hat of your own. If you prefer, embellish a wooden shoe or even an old shoe from your closet! Decorate your piece with natural materials only, such as dried flowers, grains, or seeds, etc. You don t want to use any plastic or silk flowers. Click this link for a pattern: Class #7 Dutch Master - Scarecrow - Recycled Materials Can you make a scarecrow of a Dutch Master? Use your imagination to create a scarecrow of your favorite Dutch painter, like Vermeer, Rembrandt or Van Gogh. It should be made of recycled materials. Make sure it can be viewed from different sides. This can be done as an individual or class project. Class #8 Nature by Design - Fruit and Vegetable Prints, Nature Rubbings Create a unique design using a vegetable block print made from a cut fruit or vegetable. You may need help from an adult when using a cutting tool. Or choose to make a design rubbing of leaves, grasses and twigs. You will want to make your design on a piece of paper of your choice. Class #9 Delftware - Flower Pots or Tiles Design a container to hold flowers that is inspired by Delft Blue Earthenware. The world famous Delftware is most often blue and white, (but can also feature yellow, green and red) and often includes a refined flower, leaf and vines motifs interspersed with ornamental birds or typical Dutch landscapes and seascapes. Your project can be ceramic fired clay, a can with paper twists covering it, or decoupage on a glass container or clay pot. Use your imagination. You may also design a tile that is inspired by Delftware, try permanent markers or paint on a tile. Class #10 Flying Fun, Flowers & their Pollinators - Mobile Pollinators are essential in the web of life. Use your imagination to construct a mobile of bees, bats, butterflies or hummingbirds and the flowers they pollinate. Use recycled materials and be sure that your mobile is equipped to be hung. Class #5 Dutch Landscapes - Grain Art The Netherlands is one of the leading innovators in sustainable landscape design. Dutch Wave Garden Design focuses on natural, densely planted perennials that can survive drought and are visually interesting throughout the seasons. Create a design using seeds, beans, grains of something you can find in a Dutch landscape. The design can be a flower, windmill, waterway or the landscape. Use a stiff backing, like cardboard or foam core as a base for your design. Class #6 Dutch Flower Market- Pressed Flowers Holland is famous for flowers! Pick a flower that you may find in Aalsmeer at FloraHolland, the world-famous flower market. Choose a design that features flowers or create a classic Dutch landscape design using pressed flowers, plant petals and dried leaves. Your finished picture should not be larger than 8 x 11. It can be framed and under glass. 2 Class #11 Instagram Nature - Photography Capturing shadows of branches, the intricate patterns of fern foliage or the arrangement of a flower s sepals and petals in photographs is a form of art. Walk around the school yard or a neighborhood park to look for unusual shapes, patterns or colors in nature. Capture the excitement of a flower s bloom or a tree s budding branch through photography. Print your favorite photo and display on paper or with a photo mat. Class #12 Blooming Botanicals! - Botanical Illustrations For hundreds of years, botanical illustrations have provided an opportunity to identify plant species and promote an interest in natural history and horticulture. Use the history of this fine craft to draw your own botanical illustration. Choose watercolor, ink, pencil, or paint to depict your favorite flower. Your illustration must be of flowers. View the artistic and horticulture lesson plans at phsonline.org/lesson-plans
5 HORTICULTURE CLASSES All plants must be grown or cared for by the exhibitor for a minimum of one month prior to the Show. Class #13 Flowering Plant in a Pot Must be in bloom. Class #14 Foliage Plant in a Pot Class #15 Container-Grown Vegetable One variety to a pot Class #16 Cactus and Succulents Class #17 Seed and Grow Plant the seeds in a cup or pot and watch them sprout! Make sure the seeds get enough light and water. Class #18 Seed View Place a bean or other type of seed between two pieces of glass or plastic held in a frame or with a clamp. Put a wet paper towel in the bottom and watch the beans sprout. This can also be done in a plastic bag with a wet paper towel taped to a sunny window. Class #19 Dish Garden An arrangement of three or more plants in a shallow planter or bowl, no larger than 15 in any direction. Small figures may be used. Class #22 Garbage Gardening Sprouting or rooted plants from the kitchen for example, root vegetable tops, sweet potatoes, fruit seeds, avocado pits, etc. Class #23 Bulb Forcing Choose a paper-white or amaryllis bulb for the best success. You may choose other bulbs (hyacinth, tulip, daffodil or crocus) but note that they require bulb chilling. Place bulb in a container in potting mix, stones or water. Start with indirect sunlight for the first two weeks and then move to a sunny bright location. Forcing should take 3 to 5 weeks for paper-whites and 5 to 8 weeks for amaryllis. 6 CLASSROOM PROJECTS Horticultural Color Wheel No matter what type of art project you are creating, color is an important consideration. Construct a color wheel indicating the primary colors as well as the secondary colors. Your color wheel can be composed of colorful photos of flowers that you cut from a seed catalogue or magazine. Instagram Nature Photography Poster Capturing shadows of branches, the intricate patterns of fern foliage, or the arrangement of a flower s sepals and petals in photographs is a form of art. Walk around the school yard or a neighborhood park to look for unusual shapes, patterns, or colors in nature. It could be the angle of a petal... the shape chewed into a leaf by an insect... a mosaic of sunflowers drenched in gold, red, and burgundy hues. These are the types of natural features that can inspire you to closely observe the world, learn the elements of art, and find your unique creative voices. Create a photo collection of what captured the class s attention in nature. Dutch Garden Use your imagination to construct a garden or outdoor recreation area in Holland. Design an escape for your friends and neighbors that may incorporate waterways, windmills and bicycle paths. Use a box, a piece of foam core, or another base material as your park space. Add miniature plants, figurines, rocks and sand to complete your landscape design. You may include recreational activities. Window Box Recycling Project Assemble a window box from recycled materials. Group and tape together several boxes for the base. Decorate the outside of the box with egg cartons, decorated water bottles, or other recycled materials. Craft flowers from recycled materials and paint them. Use pipe cleaners to affix the flowers to the box. Make sure to include some floral oasis in the base of your box to hold flowers. Dutch Master Scarecrow or Windmill - Recycled Materials See Artistic Class 7 on page 4. Flying Fun: Flowers and Their Pollinators - Mobile See Artistic Class 10 on page 4. School Garden Enter your school garden in the PHS Gardening and Greening Contest. Junior Flower Show judges can evaluate and judge your garden for participation in the PHS Contest. 4
7 Flower Show Terminology What is a Class? A classification or category in which you make your horticultural or artistic entry (e.g., Crafty Creatures). What is a Grade? A grade determines which age division within the class the entry will go into (e.g., 1st grade, 2nd, 3rd, etc.). What is the difference between Fresh & Dried? FRESH is recently cut from a living plant and has not been treated with dye or paint. DRIED has been treated in sand, glycerin, borax, or naturally preserved (i.e., hanging upside down, pressed in a book, or stored in a dry dark place). What Is Natural? NATURAL includes branches, driftwood, bark, stones, shells, seeds, grasses, etc. NOT NATURAL means paint, dyes, ribbons, manufactured pastas, felt, candy, glitter or plastic flowers. What does Accessories Permitted mean? Accessories are non-plant material additions to the floral design. Keep in mind that the accessories used must be in proportion to the arrangement (e.g., if the class states that an arrangement should be no larger than 12 in any direction, that means 12 with all accessories in place). Also, accessories are considered extra, which means they can be removed without altering the balance and design of the arrangement Entry Rules All plants must have been grown by the exhibitor, except in artistic classes. All plants must have been cared for by the exhibitor and grown in the exhibit container for at least one month prior to the Show. Artificial plant material not permitted. All materials must be natural. Accessories are permitted where specified. Entries submitted for the Classroom Projects can be freestanding. We recommend using the heavier tri-fold presentation display boards or using additional support on regular poster boards. The use of heavy objects attached to the poster itself is not advised. Judges and Awards PHS will provide judges to visit the school, judge the entries, and award ribbons. Judges may subdivide a class. Participant Ribbons will be awarded to entries that are not winners. Age Division and Color Coding (applicable when several grades are participating) A. Up to and including 2nd Grade PINK B. 3rd through 5th Grade ORANGE C. 6th through 8th Grade YELLOW D. 9th through 12th Grade GREEN E. Ungraded Classes BLUE Thank You TO REGISTER Contact Johanna Schoeller at jschoeller@ pennhort.org or PHS recognizes the dedication of all the teachers and youth leaders who encourage their students to plant a seed, make a flower arrangement, create a crafty creature, or research a classroom project. We share with them the hope that they may be grooming a budding horticulturist, inspiring a future artist, or encouraging the next generation of environmental stewards. 5
