1 Johnson County Master Gardener Thymes July/August 2018 MG Steering Committee Meeting Wednesday, August 8, 7:00 pm (no July meeting); Johnson County Extension Office. All are invited to attend! Ribbon-Cutting for the Agricultural Area at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. By Linda Schreiber The following news release has been sent out to the area media: Johnson County Master Gardeners News Release - July 5, 2018 JCMG Demonstration Garden flourishes in its new location IOWA CITY - In July, Johnson County Master Gardeners (JCMG) will celebrate 25 years of gardening education at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. The longtime partnership with the Johnson County Agricultural Association (JCAA), also known as the JC Fair Board, recognizes gardening during the annual Johnson County 4-H/FFA Fair held on the grounds, 4261 Oak Crest Hill Road SE, Iowa City, every July. Johnson County Extension (JC Extension), the organizing sponsor of the local Master Gardener program, is celebrating 100 years of service in Festivities during the annual fair will include a ribbon cutting to celebrate the JCMG agricultural area Sunday, July 22, at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend. Representatives of JCMG, Extension, JCAA and Earl Johnson family will participate. The Earl Johnson family of rural Oxford donated an antique corn crib to JCMGs to accent the Demonstration Demo Garden. Extension, JCMG and JCAA have long shared a partner location. The relationship expanded to launch the popular Butterfly House at the JC Fairgrounds with support from JCMG, Forever Green Landscaping, JCAA and Butterliz of Iowa in The Demo Garden relocated in 2017 at JCAA s request. The relocation shifted the garden from a space adjacent to one of the cattle barns to a highly-visible, front-and-center location on the fairgrounds and contiguous to the Master Gardener s Butterfly House. Launched in 1993, the fairground garden had been in the same location for 24 years, which meant giving up an accumulation of highlyproductive garden soil. JCMGs were assured by then JCAA Board President Randy Lackender the new location would have access to water with the addition of a new line and hydrant as well as electricity. Mr. Lackender also suggested adding an architectural component, such as an antique metal corn crib, to draw attention to the location and the garden. When the rural Johnson family offered an antique metal corn crib to JCMGs, they were eager to accept the contribution and continue the vision for the Demonstration Garden partnership with the JCAA. The corn crib was moved nearly 20 miles to its new location on the JC Fairgrounds on Wednesday, June 27. Master Gardeners have continued active partnerships to offer the Butterfly House at the JC Fair since The Butterfly House, popular with all ages, will be open Saturday, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday it is open 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

2 Financial support and sponsors have helped Master Gardeners achieve the garden move and bin relocation. JCMG Steering Committee co-chair Sharon Jeter contacted bin mover Mark Bruellman of Rolfe, Iowa, to make arrangements to move the crib. JCAA members and volunteers anchored the bin to a concrete base poured by Foundations Unlimited of Kalona. Iowa City Ready Mix donated the concrete for the garden project. In 2018, JCMGs received a Theisen's grant to enhance the Demonstration Garden. Organized in 1982, Johnson County Master Gardeners is an educational volunteer program, sponsored by Iowa State University Johnson County Extension and Outreach. JCMG provides current, research-based, home horticulture information and education to the citizens of Iowa through programs and projects. Master Gardeners receive horticulture training, and volunteer to promote a mission of education and service. Next Year s Plant Sale and Flea Market By Sharon Jeter We (the committee) talked about this year s Plant Sale and Flea Market and based on comments would like to ask all our fellow Master Gardeners to do a little prep work this summer. If we all would take pictures of the flowers/plants in our garden that we will possibly be donating or dividing for our sale this would let potential buyers know what they are purchasing. This would be especially nice with lilies and hostas once they are grown and looking fabulous. Any and all pictures would be great. Another idea would be to take cuttings this fall, plant them in pots, and then plant them (pot and all) in the ground. You can then mulch them and in the Spring take them out of the ground and clean them up. This has worked well for me (Sharon). Also when you think about donating flea market items (pots, tools etc.), clean them up this fall, and store them until Spring. It seems like we never have enough time in the Spring. I am in the process of cleaning my garage and basement, packing boxes for our sale next Spring. I would rather we make the money from these items than me giving them away, so think about doing this. We can all work together to make the Plant Sale and Flea Market even a greater success! Thymes Deadline Information/articles for the Thymes should be sent to Chris Sedrel at oscarsgram@aol.com or Doug Geraets at dougrph@aol.com Please send news, volunteer opportunities, stories, pictures, etc., for the September issue by Friday, August 24. Grow It Cook It Camp By Shannon Bielicke Thank you to the Master Gardeners who have volunteered to help with this activity! More volunteers are welcome so please Amey Kollar akollar@iastate.edu or call if you are available. Amey is my coworker in the front office at the Extension office and she could really use your help. You don t have to help on all of the dates. You can pick which dates work for you. We have had limited numbers sign up so I would like to encourage you to please check your calendars. Growing Together Mini Grant partnership-as part of the 2018 Master Gardener Growing Together Grant we are working to help the Grow It Cook It Camp put on by Extension staff Amey Kollar. This is an educational growing and cooking camp that is a partnership with the North Liberty Food pantry. Grow It Cook It Camp Schedule: Wednesdays 9:00-11:30 AM July 11th & 18th, August 1st & 8th. Volunteers will work with middle school students while they learn basic cooking and gardening skills and assist with set up and clean up. Please also visit the 2018 Growing Together Mini Grant webpage for more information: Ecumenical Towers Update (from Jane Zukin) Many thanks to Master Gardeners Michael Hesseltine and Nicole Pearson for stepping up to manage the garden and volunteers at Ecumenical Towers beginning in 2019! Over the past eight years, the garden has inspired the residents to form a garden club and raise dozens of vegetables and herbs in containers on their patio. I m happy to pass the baton to Michael and Nicole and certainly will volunteer at ET as often as I can. 2

3 Update on Oaknoll Volunteer Opportunity (from Marilou Gay) Last month there was a request for additional Master Gardeners to work with Oaknoll residents over the summer. A couple of people have stepped up to do this and more are always needed. Again, this is a fun chance to work one-on -one with a retired resident, set your own schedule, and share your knowledge and love of gardening! You ll find that these folks are also very garden savvy and truly appreciate your time with them. Oaknoll is a core project. I encourage anyone interested in an Oaknoll Volunteer Opportunity to contact either Marilou Gay or Vicki Siefers for more information about how you can have fun while making a difference for a retired person in our community. Marilou Gay , rmlgay@aol.com & Vicki Siefers , vicki.siefers@gmail.com. Transforming Garden Designs By Sharon Rude Friday, May 25, was a warm 90 F, but any day is a good day to see Reiman Gardens at ISU. The Wind, Waves, and Light Sculpture Exhibition is the 2018 Garden Display at the gardens, April 28 through November 3, this year. The sculptures are the work of Exhibit Designer George Sherwood. Thirteen kinetic sculptures were designed to explore space, time and the relationship of objects in motion. The sculptures are made of reflective stainless steel. Wind speed and direction change their movements, and shades of light and any precipitation change their reflections, which are continuously transforming the sculptures. allium and Arkansas Bluestar were in bloom in many areas of the gardens, and many young annuals had recently been planted, both in ground and in planters. The hillside along the west side was terraced last year. It has a winding path to stroll along to view many water-wise plants, such as chives, dianthus, and a variety of sedums and salvias. There is also a stairway on the hillside, lined with more allium. For more information on Reiman Gardens and the sculpture exhibit, visit movement. In Des Moines, follow the signs from I-235 to the Sculpture Park, and you will find the Better Homes & Gardens (BHG) Test Gardens. It is located at the intersection of 15 th Street and Grand Avenue, across the street from the Sculpture Park, in downtown Des Moines. The mission of the garden is to serve gardeners nationwide by offering garden-tested, firsthand information about plants, gardening methods, garden styles, projects and ideas. The gardens reside on half an acre, about the size of half a city block, which was transformed twenty years ago, across the street from the Meredith Corporation, the parent company who is the publisher of the Better Homes & Gardens magazine. The garden is open to the public only on Fridays from noon to 2:00pm, starting the first Friday of May through the first 3

4 Friday of October. It has 22 distinct areas to show plants and ideas for home landscapes in different climates and growing conditions, through various seasons. The areas include a shade garden, sunny borders, rose garden, and a shrub collection. There are 2,500 shrubs, trees, perennials, vines, and annuals. The gardens change annually and serve as display gardens, a testing ground for plants and garden designs, and a photography studio for magazines, books, and the BHG website. Similar to a test kitchen where recipes are evaluated, plants which are not yet available from nurseries or garden centers are evaluated in the Test Garden. Depending on their performance, BHG will be ready to write about the plants when they come to market. Old plants are removed and are replaced with new ones. Arbors and trellises are replaced with new designs. The BHG Test Garden is transformed each year to bring readers ideas for their own gardens. For more information on the BHG Test Garden, visit What better way to end a 90 + garden tour day than with an ice cream truck, conveniently parked outside BHG test garden. The lavender lemon flavor was an excellent choice!
