The Scottish Rock Garden Club Glasgow 2013 Ian Kidman s Androsace hirtella x cylindrica topped the bill at Glasgow. The magnificent cushion was part of an unbelievable 3 pan entry, along with Primula Aire Mist and Ranunculus alpestris.. Entries were boosted by a welcome group of exhibitors from the North of England who brought enough plants for their own show with them. It was wonderful to see. Let s hope that the AGS leave the Glasgow date free every year. As well as the contingents from the south home members brought more plants than usual to Milngavie resulting in the biggest entry at an SRGC Glasgow show for many years. As the benches filled up Show secretary John Lee had stewards moving plants and classes to make space. Not only a record entry but there seemed to be a record number of large pans. Pity the judges who had to work through this lot. The benches looked like planted gardens as the pots seemed to disappear behind luxuriant foliage. This was a time to hope your entry was visible and showed its best face forward. Hopefully visitors were inspired to grow such plants and that group membership will increase. Wandering round the hall was like exploring an Aladdin's cave. As I seem to do in Tesco s, I often found myself walking against the traffic between the benches. If entries keep up like this the Milngavie town hall is going to need a one way system
Primula chionantha Primula limbata Primula melantha Moonshine Primula Mc Watt s Cream is an old west of Scotland favourite There were a spectacular number of Primulas in particular. Amazingly most were distinct representatives of their species or variety. With good entries in classes for European Asiatic Primulas it was not surprising to find the six pan classes also contained their share of the genus. Primula jesoana

CRUCIFERS IS THIS AN OUTDATED WORD? Iberis pruitii Should they be BRASSICAS? A fine pair of Spanish cabbage cousins by which I mean members of the Brassicaceae formerly known as Cruciferae. Teesdaliopsis conferta Iberis pruitii comes from Andalusia in Southern Spain it is a fine compact wee candytuft. The second is Teesdaliopsis conferta which I expected the authorities to say comes from Teesdale in Northern England but all the texts I consulted say it is native to Northern Spain and Portugal. The Teesdaliopsis is much laxer growing and has more glaucous leaves and its flowers seem untidy compared to the Iberis. Draba John Saxon looks like a form of D. dedeana. The yellow flowered Degenia velebitica comes well from seed.
George Young s almost too good to be true Townsendia spathulata Cotton Ball Trillium grandiflora plene Lathyrus vernus albus Sam Sutherland s Astragalus utahensis was awarded a Certificate of Merit Barry Winter s fabulous Myosotis pulvinaris Primula matthiola var matthiola forma alba
John di Paola s 3 pans of Rhododendron won the Edward Darling Memorial Troph They are R. Ramapo R. Shamrock & R. Princess Anne American plants Primula rusbyi, Lewisia tweedyi and Sam s big Astragalus More American plants Lewisia tweedyi with a large Anemonella thalictroides and Aquilegia canadensis Several Trillium species with Trillium albidum at the front with a tiny T. pusillum beside it
Sue Simpson won the Bronze Medal for Most Points in Section II with a great entry of many different plants. Just look at this white Primula Above. Anemonella thalictroides alba and beside it the variety Green Dragon. Left is a fine pan of the double wood anemome, Anemone nemorosa Vestal Sanguinaria canadensis Don Armstrong is pink Primula tanneri Primula rosea
