Azalea Trumpet Winter Spring 2019 Molly Kimler, District Director Since that wonderful day at Calloway Gardens in April 2017 when I was installed in as District Director, I have had the most incredible time that I could have ever imagined. I have made new friends, rekindled old friendships, visited amazing places and shown so much love! As I write this last message, I look back on all that we ve accomplished with pride and a full heart. A source of pride is the work that has been done in promoting the Theme: Celebrating Our Heritage While Continuing the Legacy. All clubs were asked to plant native plants and trees in honor of The Garden Club of Georgia s 90 th birthday. You did this with so much love! The President s reports last year and this year have filled my mailbox. Thank you to all who have sent in reports. Last year, 42 clubs submitted reports, and this year 43 clubs have sent reports. Last year we had an increase in membership, and new clubs formed, one of which is the Grovetown Garden Club near Augusta. Welcome Grovetown and thank you for your President s Report. We have had some great meetings over the last two year. Both Azalea District Annual Fall meetings, one in Jewell and one in Hartwell were beautiful events at wonderful venues with great speakers. Both meetings were well-attended, and we made so many lovely memories. At the Fall meeting in Hartwell, $ was collected for natural disasters in hopes that our sister clubs that suffered through Hurricane Michael would use this money to replace trees in their towns and parks. Likewise, the Azalea District Board meetings held in Washington, Watkinsville, Milledgeville and Social Circle were productive and informative, leaving me feeling confident about the leadership and direction of the Azalea District. The Azalea District members have hosted and participated in Environmental Schools, Gardening 1

. Additionally, flower shows for standard and non-standard were held in the Azalea District. Garden Therapy Projects are happening everywhere from making Christmas and Easter stockings to raised beds. And you can t imagine how many pull tabs have been collected for the Ronald McDonald House in Augusta. You Azaleas have sent many campers to the Wild and Wonderful Experience Camp, and The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. college scholarships have been awarded to many students from local clubs and from the Azalea District. So much love and commitment to the Garden Club mission has been shown by the members in our district! That s not all, though! A Blue Star Marker was placed in Midville, and two more will be placed in May one in Augusta and one at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield. We in the Azalea District are also proud that we could be part of the 90th birthday of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. It all started right here. The Azalea District hosted the GCG State convention in Macon. Wow! What a Garden Party we had! Indeed, we all have celebrated our heritage in so many wonderful ways, and I am confident that we will continue to do so. As we come to the end of the term, it is with bittersweet emotion that I close this chapter. I have so many wonderful memories during my time as the Azalea District Director, and I am so thankful and humbled to have had this opportunity. If you want to see me cry, be at the GCG State Convention, Azalea District Breakfast in Columbus. At this time the gavel will be passed to Marilyn McDonnell and a new slate of officers will begin a wonderful journey as your newly-appointed leaders. 2

Pollinators What are they and are they necessary? Bees, butterflies, some bugs, hummingbirds, moths and bats to name a few. Insect pollinators are vital to the existence of almost 90 percent of the world s flowering plants including large portions of food products, this information from Science Daily. The need to restore native plant habitat for pollinators is crucial. We need to consider planting native plants before we plant anything else. For example, Inkberry, Summersweet Clethra, Carolina Jessamine and Florthergilla, These may not be as well-known as others but make valuable landscape additions. Blueberries and cherries depend on honey bee pollination as does the large bee colony in central California must go to the almond orchard. Almond trees have very little nectar so to aid the pollinators the orchard farmers plant flowers certain grasses in between the trees. You have to feed the trees to get good bees. Will we still have food if our pollinators disappear? Yes, but we won t have the variety nor could we afford it. It would definitely change our quality of life and change our choices. Remembering our own yards: don t spray to eliminate the clover bees love clover. Submitted by Yonnette Booker, Pine Tree Garden Club of Hartwell, GA Christmas Cheer To Hart Senior Center Pine Tree Garden Club of Hartwell is very active in the Garden Therapy program. They present Easter Eggs, Holiday Stockings and Fig Leaf undies to the Senior Citizen Center or one of the 3 assisted living complexes in Hartwell on a rotating basis. It s always fun to see the creative talent of the members in decorating the stockings. 4 The following members presented 32 stockings with $1 tucked in each. 14 Greetings from Piccadilly Farm: Rain, rain, go away, come again but not on Hellebore Days! Inviting everyone to come out for our 27th Annual Hellebore Days to be held for two weekends this year: Fridays and Saturdays, 9 am to 4 pm, on March 1, 2, 8 and 9. We will be open rain or shine! There will be guided tours featuring hellebores in the gardens of Piccadilly Farm at 11 am each day. We have some great hellebores available including special hybrids. We will be serving free refreshments. Remember that we have changed our schedule to the following: NEW NURSERY SCHEDULE IN 2019 Eight Open House Weekends: Held on First Two Fridays & Saturdays of March, April, May & October/ Hours 9 am - 4 pm Open For Individual Sales Appointments All Year We have had some people ask us what is a "Sales Appointment"? It works like a doctor's appointment, only for your garden and not for your body. Contact us by phone or and tell us that you would like to schedule an appointment. We will respond and let you know what days and times that we are available. Visit our website for more information. Individual Sales Appointments allow us more time to devote to your plant selections than we have on a busy open house weekend. Give it a try, we think that you will like it as much as us! Let us know if you have any questions. Hope to see you soon and until then... Happy Gardening, Bill and Valerie Hinesley 14

Plant America at Mistletoe State Park After Six and Cherokee Rose Garden Clubs planted holly, daffodils, tulips, and leucojum at Mistletoe State Park entrance drive gates as part of the Plant Our State Parks Yellow Project in These photos are what it looked like before on August 31, 2017, after adding soil, plants and mulch in November 2017 and waiting for blooms on March 3, 2018, and this year on February 13, The holly is still growing and being pruned by park staff. The leucojum are blooming. Daffodils had some buds, but many are missing and may have been food for wildlife. The Plant America theme will continue this year. Marilyn McDonnell was state project leader and would love to see what other clubs in the Azalea District did. Please let her know your club name and which state park you planted. She would also love photos from planting times and current blooms. Are the daffodils you planted still there and are they blooming? 15

Gray Garden Club Installs Officers At the February 5, 2019 meeting of the Gray Garden Club, Audrey Roland installed the new officers for the next two-year term. Louisville Garden Club Arbor Day Program On Friday, February 22, 2019, the Louisville Garden Club and the City of Louisville, in conjunction with Louisville being a Tree City USA, hosted an Arbor Day program in the Helen Clark Park. Each year the garden club plants a tree in our city, in recognition of Arbor Day. This year the club planted a Drake Elm tree. The Elm was planted beside the playground in the park. The Drake Elm tree provides a large shade cover and will block the sun from the playground, in the heat of the day. Mayor Larry Morgan read a proclamation. Several members of the club shared information about Arbor Day and the importance of planting trees. Arbor Day in Georgia is celebrated on the 3rd Friday in February so a new planted tree has time to establish itself, before the heat of summer. The ideal time to plant trees in Georgia is between November and mid-march. An old Chinese proverb says The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now. With our city also being a Tree City USA we encourage planting a tree each year to replenish those trees that we lose, from year to year, due to weather, disease, and old age. Each year our garden club also plants hundreds of daffodil bulbs in our park and throughout our city. We are hoping to attract more bees, while adding beauty to our park and city. 17
