1 Azalea Trumpet Fall Winter 2018 Molly Kimler, District Director November 2018 My Amazing Azaleas, you are the best! It has been a very busy fall traveling to all of the GCG District meetings and dodging Hurricane Michael. Sadly, Hurricane Michael did wreak havoc in the southern states, and I was filled with pride at the fall meeting in Hartwell when we collected $ to send to NGC Natural Disasters. After seeing some of the damage in southwest Georgia firsthand, this makes me especially proud to be part of such a generous group! Speaking of the fall meeting, our meeting was the last one held, but we certainly outdid all the other districts in Georgia. I guess they saved the best for last! We topped in attendance with 190 attending. We handed out eight patron and ten named scholarships. There were 18 Standard of Excellence awards given to clubs, and 42 of the 51 clubs sent in President Reports. A great big thank you was also extended to all that helped with the GCG State Convention in Macon, and all of the Azalea District State and Azalea District Awards were also given out. That was wonderful! The raffle baskets given by different clubs and the beautiful painting by Judy Gantt brought in a total of $1, The winner of the beautiful painting of hummingbirds and dogwood was Richard Crabbe. Everyone was captivated as Joe Washington talked about Adapting Planting Growing. His topic hit home to so many of us as our gardening skills change. The theme for this term has been Celebrating Our Heritage While Continuing the Legacy As we go into fall, there is still time to plant natives in the Azalea District. Let us know that your club has planted native in honor of the 90 th Anniversary of Garden Club. Looking ahead, we will have our last Azalea District Board Meeting on February 19, 2019 in Social Circle. We are also looking forward to the Azalea District Breakfast at the GCG State Convention in Columbus when I will hand over the Azalea District Gavel to Marilyn McDonnell. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and a beautiful new year. 1

4 Spade and Trowel Members attend GCG 90 th Anniversary Celebration Athens, GA On June 9 th, Nancy and Dave, Teresa, Elaine, and Pamela traveled to Athens GA for the 2 nd Garden Club of GA 90 th Anniversary celebration. They toured the GCG headquarters and enjoyed the refreshments Barbara Bourque, GCG 1 st Vice-president, presented a slide show of the GCG 90-year History. One of the most interesting photos was of the 1 st Annual GCG convention in 1929, which was held in Augusta, GA. The Sand Hills Garden Club hosted the event at the Bon Air Hotel. A 2 nd Augusta connection was also a surprise. The first GA Blue Star Marker was installed in Augusta at 5 th and Reynolds Streets by the Iris Garden Club. Two large checks, exceeding $10,000 and representing donations from Georgia Garden Clubs, were presented to the State Botanical Garden for the Children s Garden and the C. Burke Day Handicap Accessibility Project. The Director of the State Botanical Garden, Jennifer Cruse- Sanders also presented a slide show on the history of the garden which was quite interesting as well. We all learned a lot and look forward to the 100 th Anniversary celebration in ten years. 7 Pine Needle Garden Club Lincolnton, GA Celebrates Green & Blue! Our fourteen members and Our Wonderful Guest Speaker, Molly Kimler, Azalea District Director, and a Special Note from Our Azalea District Pull-Tab Director, Dr. Virginia Allen, made for a Big Surprise for Norma McKinney and Debbie Dent. These two ladies submitted an Award Application last December. That application won First in the Azalea District, First in The Deep South Six State Competition and an Honorable Mention at the National Garden Club. Our First National Recognition for Our Pine Needle Garden Club of Lincolnton Georgia. The Garden Club of Georgia began a Pull-Tab Recycling Program when the then President of the GCG, Susanne Wheeler's small grandchild was diagnosed with cancer. The program was designed to turn those Pull-Tabs to cash and donate that money to the Ronald McDonald Charity to help families with children in long term care at Local Children's Hospitals. Norma McKinney and Dennis Gay began collecting in Lincolnton and Norma has, for the past ten years, averaged one hundred pounds per year. Some years more. Some years less. But last year we had 108 pounds and the year before 160 pounds of Pull-Tabs! And we are so proud of their accomplishments! But, we are, also, proud that our community has come together to collect and get those Pull-Tabs in to a PNGC Member. I know one of my neighbors, The Dixon Family, just donated a huge zip-lock bag filled with Pull-Tabs! And that's not all! Norma has her thumb on every Pull-Tab in Lincolnton!! So, begin to save for this new Garden Club Season! Refreshments kept with Our Pine Needle, Green and Blue- Ribbon Theme! 7 Pictured: Becky Reese, Joyce Belk, Ruth Tonsing, Linda Joiner, Elaine Beggs, Hazel Poole, Norma McKinney, Peggy Glover, Our Speaker-Molly Kimler, Azalea District Director, Jackie Wurst, Lilly Turner, Becky Goldman, Debbie Dent, Diane Reese. 15 HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY IRIS GARDEN CLUB IN AUGUSTA 15 Augusta's Iris Garden Club celebrated its 70 th birthday at its November meeting with a packed house in attendance including Jane Hersey, GCG State President and Molly Kimler, Azalea District Director. The current Iris president is Marilyn McDonnell. Seventy years were relived through a video program. Bonnie McClain took those in attendance down memory lane which included the following.: Augusta is known for the downtown Riverwalk and back-in-the-day, Millie Carpenter, a school teacher for 25 years, loved planting perennials on Riverwalk, naming them after her students. Current club member, Lee Otts, donates Iris flowers and club members plant them to keep Millie's dream of flowers on Riverwalk alive. Dr. Carol Pryor, Augusta's first female Gynecologist, started 'the gift of giving' asking members to donate a Christmas gift for adult patients at a local hospital - and it is still going strong every December. Last year when the gifts were given to the adults, one elderly woman said it would probably the only Christmas gift she would get. Iris is making a difference in people's lives. Ellen Visser, club president, was a volunteer for the local Girl's Center and traveled to the United Nations to promote better education. Some of the Iris Garden Club members are qualified Flower Show Judges - another contribution making a difference. After 70 years, Iris Garden Club continues to be actively involved in the Augusta area and in District and State. The club also sponsors the Blue Star Marker on Reynolds Street, the Peek-A- Book semi-annual garden tour, Operation Buddy Christmas luncheon (for veterans) and much more. Happy Birthday Iris!

16 The Florence Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award Carolyn Childers 16 In 1979, Carolyn Childers started her leadership journey with the Azalea District. Thirty-nine years later, she is still very active locally, as well as at the district and state levels. With all of these years of experience, she is, indeed, one of the most knowledgeable members of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Duties on the Azalea District have included Roadside Beautification, Parliamentarian, Historian, and flower show schedules. Carolyn was asked to serve on the GCG Board in 1985 as the Azalea District Director, and in 1987 she began her journey as a flower show judge. She does spectacular designs, has a love for horticulture, and can tell you the name of almost any plant. If she doesn t know the name immediately, she will find it before the sun goes down. She is always willing to help any newcomer to the flower show world and will joyfully guide them to blue ribbons. She can write a flower show schedule in her sleep. In 1991, she became an accredited Flower Show Judge. That same year, she was one of many in the Azalea District who helped raise $40,000 at Christmas at Beaver Dam Farms the farm of Maryanne and Kenny Rogers, which ultimately help fund the entrance gates you drive through as you enter the State Botanical Garden in Athens. On the state level, she has been one active person, serving as Flower Show Judge, GCG Headquarters and Operations Committee Member, Scholarship Committee Member, and Guide Assistant Editor. She has also served as Guide Editor, Historian and Archivist, Membership Chairman, and other areas. Dollie Harper, GCG President from and Azalea District Director from said this person was always the one to step up when needed. A case in point was when Dollie needed a person to fill in for the State Awards Committee. This person instantly came to mind because she knew that knew the awards book like the back of her hand. Later Dollie called on Carolyn again to compile her president s history report and since then she has also helped out other GCG President with their reports. Most recently, she has served as co-director for the Azalea District, thus fulfilling a Garden Club lifetime dream for Molly Kimler, who had always said that if she ever became Azalea District Director, Carolyn Childers would be her co-director. In fact, when Molly was finally named director, Carolyn Childers delayed going emeritus to honor Molly s wish that she serve as her co-director. What a privilege it was to present this year s Florence Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award to Carolyn Childers!

17 NOTE Herb Award #41 - Application should be sent to Award Chairman Diane Harbin at DianeJHarbin@comcast.net Rosie Davidson, the previous Herb Chairman, has moved to Florida and is no longer handling the judging of this award.
