Dirty Dozen 2017 NOMINATION FORM NOMINATIONS DUE Aug. 26, 2017 The GWC is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Dirty Dozen list. The Georgia Water Coalition publishes the annual Dirty Dozen list as a call to action, highlighting the worst offenses to Georgia s water offenses that are the consequences of an under-funded state environmental agency and a lack of political will to aggressively enforce laws that protect our water, land, air and people. Is your watershed beset by ongoing problems that local, state, or federal authorities fail to correct? Does a land development, water supply or other major proposed project threaten a special place in your community or region? Is a local, municipal or industrial facility fouling your river? If the answer is yes, nominate your issue for the 2017 Dirty Dozen list. To submit your nomination, please read and complete this form. Deadline to submit your nomination: August 26, 2017.

4 The Saved Seed The Saved Seed is National Garden Club's second early reader book written to educate elementary children about the life cycle of seed plants. The Saved Seed follows the journey of a smiling pumpkin seed from Halloween pumpkin through the year, becoming a seedling, a vine and then a new pumpkin! Along the way, children learn through beautiful illustrations how to care for their own pumpkin seeds and become successful pumpkin gardeners! Ginny Allen has purchased 60 copies, which can be purchased for $12. If purchased directly through NGC the cost is $16.63 with shipping. Clubs or individuals can reserve copies of the book at the reduced postage rate by sending Ginny an before October 1, 2017 indicating the number of copies wanted and the name of the person paying for and picking up the book(s). Reserving the book means that the person guarantees payment once the order is placed with NGC. Checks should be made out to ACGC and must be received in order to pick up the books. There may be some additional copies available at the district meeting. The discounted rate will not be available for books ordered after September 30th unless we have requests for at least 30 additional copies. This is a great book and makes wonderful gifts for clubs to give to schools and libraries and for members to give to children or grandchildren. Send book reservations to Ginny Allen, vallenotr@aol.com. You may send an or use the book reservation form included below. Book Reservation: The Saved Seed I would like to participate in the ACGC group order for The Saved Seed book distributed by NGC. Name: Address: Telephone contact:

5 Number of book copies requested: Date of Order: (must be received before Oct. 1, 2017 for this price) Check made out to ACGC enclosed ($12/copy) Mail to Dr. Virginia Allen, 2916 Westchester Drive, Augusta, GA Will bring check made out to ACGC ($12/copy) when I pick up the books. Ordering means that you guarantee payment. Books will be available for pick up at the October Azalea District Meeting. Special arrangements for pick up may be made by contacting Ginny Allen, vallenotr@aol.com, Name of person picking up this order: News from Pine Needle of Lincolnton The Pine Needle Garden Club of Lincolnton members attended The Azalea District of Garden Club's Bi-Annual Awards Workshop at the Club House in Union Point, Georgia. Mrs. Marilyn McDonnell and her committee have spent the summer rewriting the instructions manual and standards for each of the fifty possible awards, plus the Deep South of Garden Club's Awards and The National Garden Club's Awards into a much more convenient and easily understood format. Their hard work is such a help! Our Garden club applied for and received the State Award two years ago for Our Blue Star Marker Dedication. And we have worked hard last year and into this upcoming year for other awards. Wish us luck! PICTURED: Mrs. Ruth Tonsing, Mrs. Brenda Holder and Mrs. Peggy Glover

6 Bonnie McClain Perennial Garden Help Wanted: Please have your club adopt the Perennial garden for a month this upcoming year. Contact Bonnie McClain at The garden is located at the Riverwalk & 5 th Street Marina, and has been an ACGC project since National Garden Week: Workdays were held at the Bonnie McClain Perennial Garden during National Garden Week (June 5-10). The following workers assisted with, weeding, pruning, fertilizing, and planting: Sue Edenfield, ACGC President; Bonnie McClain, Marilyn McDonnell, & Rita Hamilton from Iris GC; Nancy Lindroth, her husband Dave, and Larraine Yarbrough from Spade & Trowel GC, and Ginny Allen from Cherokee Rose CG. 7 Workday at the Garden: On 24 July Bonnie McClain, Nancy Lindroth & Lottie Gilchrist of the Spade & Trowel Garden Club, and some city employees spread mulch at the Perennial Garden. Weeding, pruning, fertilizing and watering were also on the agenda hours counting the city workers. Bonnie McClain (Iris GC) Nancy Lindroth & Lottie Gilchrist (Spade &Trowel) Spade & Trowel Garden Community Services Spade & Trowel has four other Community Service Projects besides helping at the Bonnie McClain Perennial Garden. In June members removed winter annuals and planted summer annuals at The Lydia Project, The Woodrow Wilson House, American Cancer Society and Alzheimer s Organization. Between 20 Mar and 24 July 2017, we accumulated over 88 volunteer hours. [photos by N Lindroth] The Woodrow Wilson Project took two days, one to remove weeds and the WILD GARLIC (yikes) and the second to plant summer annuals. As you will see one of those days was really cold for May. THE WILD GARLIC TOOK OVER NOW THAT'S BETTER! WOODROW WILSON GARDEN AFTER WEEDING, PRUNING, PLANTING & PINE STRAW
