2 Cassina Newsletter / 2 May 2014 President s Message As the Cassina year comes to a close, I want to thank you for having the confidence in me to elect me as your President. Together we have accomplished so much--a record breaking Christmas Tour, starting our Cabin Restoration, a successful Garden Walk, and winning many Awards for all our efforts just to name a few. I want to thank each of you for your support and willingness to help on so many committees and projects throughout the year. I truly have enjoyed working with you. Each of you has become a special friend to me. To the Officers and Committee Chairs, thank you for your help. You made my job much easier. And a special thanks to Sandy Anderson, Dale Anderson, June Brown and Ann Worthington for stepping up to fill vacancies in positions when they arose. As I look through the photos of the past year, I think back on all the fun we had together. I look forward to working with each of you again in the future. Have a wonderful summer. Janis Rodriguez Next President April Membership Meeting Fifty-eight members and five prospective members attended Cassina s April meeting. Janis Rodriguez called the meeting to order and Anne Brown gave the Garden Grace. Jennifer Broadus introduced the guest speaker, Cassina member Neil Henry. He gave an illustrated talk on his life of gardening, beginning as a child learning from his parents. He started his current multi-year garden project on St. Simons Island in His wonderful garden was featured in the 2012 Garden Walk. June Brown, Garden Walk Co-Chair, gave a report on the upcoming Garden Walk, its focus being Garden Discoveries. She discussed the Fairy Houses Hunt, the afternoon Garden Party, the raffle for the donated Adirondack chair, artists in the gardens and at the cabins, Curt doing flower arranging at the cabins, etc. She thanked the three members whose gardens are on the Walk, the Head Hostesses and all those to be who will serve as Docents. She encouraged ticket sales. President Janis Rodriguez reminded members to visit and help maintain the newly completed Herb Garden at Fort Frederica. She announced that Tidewater will soon be able to start on the Tea Cabin restoration. She thanked all members for their feedback after her Fireside Chat and encouraged them to keep coming up with ideas for the club. She encouraged members to attend the Annual Garden Club of Georgia meeting on May in Macon, Georgia. Birthday Winner Each month a drawing is held at the membership meeting to celebrate the birthdays for the month. April s birthday winner was Janis Rodriguez. Happy Birthday to Janis and other members celebrating a birthday in April. (Remember you must be present to win). President Janis Rodriguez (r) will be handing over the position to Dottie Fielder (l). Janis Rodriguez
3 Cassina Newsletter / 3 May th Annual Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk is Here! Garden Walk is just around the corner and the excitement is building surrounding all of the unique and interesting things that will be a part of this year s event. A great big Thank You is owed to so many people who have gone above and beyond to help to make this event a wonderful success. Thank you to Mary and Ronald Mathis for making and donating the beautiful Adirondack chair which will be raffled off as a part of our afternoon Garden Party at the cabins. And thank you to Nancy Muldowney for her beautiful artwork on the chair which is going to make everyone want to try to win it! Thanks, as well, go to Curt Smith, from the Heritage Center for donating his afternoon to give arrangement demonstrations at the cabins. His time and talent are certainly appreciated. Thanks, too, to all of the artists who are coming to paint in our gardens. Plein Air art always adds such an elegant touch to the Garden Walk. And then tons of thank-yous go out to all of our Cassina Club members who have so willingly donated their time and talents in many and different ways to help the Garden Walk be the success that it is going to be. Don't forget to wear your hats! And how would any of this be possible without our wonderful and generous garden owners who have given their time and hard work to their gardens to be enjoyed by our tourgoers? With everything in place we anxiously await the actual date April 26, from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. The last and probably most important thing that we as a Garden Club can do is to sell tickets!! Sell! Sell! Sell! If you want to sell tickets yourself just contact Leslie Carlton ( ) and ask her to sign some tickets out to you. If you don t want to sell, then please encourage your friends to get their tickets online at or at the retail locations around the Island. Remember that the tickets are $30.00 before the day of the Walk and $35.00 the day of the Walk. And if you are working for the Garden Walk, you may purchase your ticket at a discount price of just $20.00 just another incentive to get involved. In order for the Garden Walk to be a success, we need your help with ticket sales. It s going to be a great day!! Garden Walk Co Chairs, l-r: Dale Anderson, June Brown and Ann Worthington Adirondack chair for raffle
4 Cassina Newsletter / 4 May 2014 Membership As soon as all of our current members are accounted for and dues are in, we will be inviting our prospective members to join the Cassina Garden Club. This is an exciting time and we look forward to getting to know our new friends. Many of our prospectives are already active participants in our Club and are going to make wonderful additions to our membership. The New Member Get-Together will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m. at the cabins and if you are sponsoring a new member this year, you will not want to miss this special time. It is always a great time for sharing and getting to know one another. Some of our Board Members will be present as well to help the new members understand the workings of the Cassina Garden Club. If you are involved in this event, please mark it on your calendar. Please call or June Brown with any membership questions at or jbrown385@gmail.com. Cassina Gardens Martha Martin and her diligent helpers have been hard at work to ensure the gardens at the cabins are in perfect shape for the Garden Walk. The gardens are recovering from the winter cold. Some plants were lost but on, Saturday April 12th,Cassina members were hard at work planting new native plants, weeding, de-mossing and putting down new mulch. Board Notes To keep the membership better informed about Board actions, a report from the most recent Board meeting is included in the monthly newsletter. Fourteen members attended the April Board meeting and approved the following items: Tidewater Preservation should be starting the Tea Cabin restoration project soon. Cesar Rodriguez is reviewing their contract. Ropes have been put up on the Slave Cabin grounds to keep construction vehicles off the grass. Garden Walk update given. Motion passed that all garden club members will be required to buy one Garden Walk ticket beginning in Shop and Sip event J. 5 Cassina Newsletter / 5 May 2014 Cabin Product Sales As we enter our busy time of year when more tourists come to St. Simons Island and visit our cabins, we are also busy restocking our more than twenty retailers on and off the island who showcase our Coastal Cookery and Native Flora Books. Our two wonderful and historical books will have a presence at the Garden Walk 2014 when we will actively sell both at our featured gardens. Need a unique gift for Mothers Day, a birthday or a hostess gift? Remember our Cassina products including Coastal Cookery, Native Flora of the Golden Isles or our attractive note cards for the perfect gift for your special someone. Field Trip to Charleston Thirty-nine Cassina members and guests enjoyed the highlights of Charleston and Middleton Plantation during their overnight field trip on March The two-day Tour began at Middleton Plantation the oldest private gardens in America. Then on to Charleston for tours and shopping. The weather was cool but sunny. The trip was a great success and all agreed it should be on the Repeat List.
