2 October 2010 Page 2 Historic Preservation and Community Outreach Through club efforts and the success of our fundraising with the Tabby and Tillandsia Garden Walk and the Christmas Tour, Cassina was pleased to be able to make donations to the following non-profit organizations in our community and throughout the state for Frederica Park Gazebo Project; St. Simons Land Trust ($12,500) Altamaha Riverkeeper ($100) Hospice of the Golden Isles ($1000) Signature Squares Brunswick ($100) Coastal Georgia Historical Society Corporate Sponsorship ($1,000) St. Simons Library League ($100) St. Simons Land Trust Live Oak Membership ($1,000) LeConte-Woodmanston Foundation ($100) Garden Club of Georgia; Cassina Scholarship ($1,000) St. Simons Council of Garden Clubs ($100) Epworth By The Sea Conference Center 60th Anniversary ($2,000) Southeastern Horticultural Society ($100) Epworth By The Sea Historical Museum ($2,000) Garden Club of Georgia Therapy Project ($100) Garden Club of Georgia Community On My Mind Project for Coastal WildScapes ($100) Oak Grove Cemetery Restoration ($400) A large part of the mission of Cassina has always been to work toward promoting our local community and preserving our local history. Through these donations this year, Cassina is certainly fulfilling that mission. New Members Introduced at September Meeting L-R: Ann Marie Dalis, Lee Dillard, Joan Wilson, Susan Oakey Holloway, Julie Rochelle, Jennifer Broadus (not pictured: Bobbie Mohlman, Becky Yelverton) September Meeting under the red tent at the Cassina Cabins Cassina s September meeting was held at the cabins under the Red Tent. A special thanks go to our friends at Oglethorpe Bank for again supplying the tent. President Beverly Nash and all the committee chairs got us in the know about the many opportunities for the members in the upcoming year. Everyone got to meet and welcome the new members to Cassina. Refreshments were served in the tea cabin, and tables were placed throughout the gardens with sign up sheets for all the various activities available. Sixty-four members, new members, and associate members attended the meeting. Beverly closed the meeting with our monthly birthday drawing. Remember you have to be present to win!

3 October 2010 Page 3 Betty Young assigns Ann Marie Dalis her garden plot Cassina Gardens In spite of the hot summer, the gardens at the cabins are beautiful. On September 9, all new members were assigned their very own plot at the cabins to garden. Remember all new members are expected to come to the gardens at least twice a month. We have changed our Saturday morning gardening time to 9 a.m. since our mornings are not as hot as they once were. Again, a special thanks to our gardeners who braved the summer heat to keep the cabin gardens so beautiful, and also thanks to our new members Julie Rochelle, Ann Marie Dalis, and Bobbie Mohlman, for being so ready to garden their plots. New members remember to call Betty Young if you worked another day rather than Saturday. Garden Club of GA 2011 Calendars This year s edition of the Garden Club of Georgia 2011 Calendars are still available. If you did not order yours last month, they will be on sale for the last time at the October meeting. Pocket size is $7.00 and large size is $9.00. These must be paid for at the time of purchase. These calendars are offered in support of the scholarship program of the Garden Club of Georgia. All proceeds go to awarding scholarships to worthy applicants attending our state schools for degrees in landscaping, horticulture, and historic preservation. This is such a worthwhile program and certainly deserving of our strong support. Calendars are great for our own use, but they also make great gifts for friends and family. Let s get behind this wonderful program of our State Garden Club. Member Concerns Our sympathy is expressed to Ann Harrell and Helen Castrillo on the death of their mothers. Helen Castrillo s husband and Sandy Storino s husband are recovering at home from recent hospitalizations. Please contact either Nan Fuller or Emily Swift on any member concerns. All Active and Associate Members of Cassina Garden Club are reminded to pick up your new Cassina Garden Club Yearbook at the October Meeting at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society Heritage Center

4 October 2010 Page 4 Christmas Tour of Homes Members of the Christmas Tour of Homes gather at the Cassina Slave Cabins for photo The members of this year s Christmas Tour committees have been hard at work on all phases of the Tour to help insure its success. There will be fresh greenery arrangements offered for sale to tour visitors as well holiday gifts available in the wonderful gift shop. Purchases are gift wrapped free. Refreshments will also be served on this scheduled stop. Becky Stephenson announced the Head Hostesses, and is busy lining up additional helpers for each home. 5 October 2010 Page 5 Docent Happening Docent Chairman Jennifer Kuja reports that new members completed their docent training on September 15th. They even got to see the docents in action as we had a visitor come to see the cabins. Each new member was given a folder of information about the history of the cabins, the garden club, as well as procedures for preparing the cabins for visitors. Janis Rodriguez and Frances Allen also contributed to information docents need to be aware of during tours. Docents attending were new members, Ann Marie Dalis, Jennifer Broadus, Bobbie Mohlman, Susan Oakey Holloway, Julie Rochelle, Lee Dillard, and Joan Wilson. On September 17th, Deana Davis, Jennifer Kuja and Susan Oakey Holloway welcomed visitors from Chicago and on September 20, Libby Hogan, Frances Allen, Bobbie Mohlman, and Jennifer Kuja welcomed an Elderhostel group to our cabins. 6 October 2010 Page 6 October Gardening We re on the web! Officers President: Beverly Nash First Vice President: MJ Choate Second Vice President Dottie Fielder Recording Secretary Ann Worthington Corresponding Secretary Beth Thrift Treasurer Kay Harrell Assistant Treasurer Pam Hamilton Your Lawns October is the time to begin lawn care for the winter. Now is the time to rake and aerate. Removing the accumulated layers of grass and debris will allow air to penetrate the soil which is important for new growth in the spring. Apply a good fertilizer in the fall months. A slow release high nitrogen fertilizer usually works well for most of our lawns in this area. Think twice or NO before planting rye grass in your lawn. Rye grass can put a permanent lawn at risk, especially centipede. Better to install sod where needed. The cooler months will allow the sod to become established and be ready come spring. Your Plants Fall is also the time to divide and transplant daylilies and other perennials. These plants will branch and bloom more profusely in the spring when planted in the fall. Pay attention to your dried up flowers at this time of the year. A good shake can yield seeds which can be stored in jars and planted next spring. This is also a good time to save your caladium bulbs. Dig them up and lay them inside on newspaper to dry. Once dry, shake off dirt and store in net bags (like onion bags). Don t just leave them in the ground and hope they will come up again. As you save them each year, you will notice they usually just get bigger and prettier with age. Your Pots Renovate your outdoor containers for fall. Pull up dead annuals and replace with hardy winter choices: ornamental cabbage, pansies, English daises or a small juniper or holly bush. Purple is a favorite color for fall. Try filling your pots with purple asters or mums along with some red kale and purple cabbages. For green, try several varieties of ornamental cabbages and kale along with different grasses. There are many shades and varieties of kales, cabbages, and grasses. Just walk thru the nursery and you will be surprised to see the beautiful array for fall. For a wonderful fall shrub, plant a cassina bush. You are sure to notice the showy yellow shrubs all about the Island this fall. If you plant, they do best in full sun with plenty of room to spread and grow. Island Garden Club Council News Neptune Garden Club is once again selling fresh greenery for Christmas. To order call Sheri Bowen at or at sheridanrb@aol.com Live Oak Garden Club will also be selling Poinsettias again. Orders can be placed with Chris Salo at or at cpsalo@comcast.net
