2 May 2012 Page 2 All About Camellias At our April meeting we learned all about Camellias from our guest speaker, Curt Smith. Curt, the Event Coordinator and Museum Store manager for the Coastal Georgia Historical Society, shared his knowledge of Camellias with us. We were so fortunate to have Curt fill in for Clayton Mathis who, at the last minute, was unable to attend our meeting. Curt is a well known camellia expert with extensive knowledge in not only camellia varieties but in propagation. His slide presentation presented us with a variety of camellias both large and miniature. Curt emphasized the varieties that were easier to find and grow. After viewing the beautiful slides, we all came away ready to try our hand at growing camellias and maybe even having a small camellia show! If you missed this program, I m sure Curt would answer any of your camellia questions when you see him in the Museum Store. New Member Coffee Curt Smith, Speaker The New Member Coffee will be held at the cabins on June 7th at 9:30 a.m. We are excited to welcome several new members this year and look forward to getting to know all of them. Sponsors are asked to attend the coffee with their new member. As a sponsor, you will be the key to helping your new member find their special place in Cassina. Please plan to attend. The Coffee is always a nice way to meet and greet our new friends and for our new members to get to know the work of Cassina and learn about the various ways they can help with our activities. Also, if you have not paid your dues, the deadline has passed. If you have any questions, you may June Brown at jbrown385@gmail.com or feel free to call June at Please get your dues in right away if you intend to continue your membership in Cassina Garden Club. 10 May 2012 Page 10 We re on the web! Officers President: Anne Aspinwall VP/President Elect: Janis Rodriguez Secretary: Ann Worthington Treasurer Kay Harrell Assistant Treasurer Pam Hamilton May Gardening While May is a time for enjoying spring flowers, it is also the month when maintenance and fertilization become increasingly important. Lawn grasses should be growing nicely now but watch for problems due to dry weather; insects, or disease. If a yellow or brown patch occurs in the lawn, make sure the area is getting enough water. If this is not a problem, check for insects by pouring soapy water (1 tablespoon of dish soap to a gallon of water) on the edge of the damaged area. If insects such a chinch bugs or mole crickets are present, they will come to the surface. Insecticides are available for theses. If no insects are present, you may need to treat the area with a fungicide. Watch for signs of insects on shrubs. Spider mites, scale, and lace bugs can be a problem this time of year. Various insecticides are available for these, but be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Lawns, shrubs and palms should be fertilized this month. Also, annuals and perennials need fertilizer every 4 to 5 weeks. Pruning of spring flowering shrubs can be done as soon as the blooms fade. Azaleas should not be pruned after July. There is still time to plant. The Time-Union suggests the following bulbs, tubers or rhizomes: alstroemerias, Aztec lilies, begonias, blood lilies, caladiums, Kaffir lilies, walking irises, African lilies, spider lilies, and tiger flowers. As for annuals, the paper lists calliopsis celosia, coleus, crossandras, exacum, gaillardias, gazanias, hollyhocks, impatiens, kalanchoes, marigolds, nicotianas, ornamental peppers, pentas, periwinkles, portulacas, salvia, thunbergias, torenias, verbenas, and zinnias. Vegetables that may be planted now are lima beans, eggplant, okra, and sweet potatoes. Cassina Garden Club Newsletter Thank you to all that have contributed to the Newsletter the past two years. I have enjoyed working with you and I deeply appreciate your co operation in getting the articles to me in a timely fashion. A special thanks to Leslie Carlton, who helped proof each newsletter and caught my typos and punctuation errors. No words can express my thanks to Kay and Jim Harrell for their help the last two years. Their knowledge and suggestions were invaluable. I was the lucky one who worked with so many talented members to bring you a monthly newsletter. And to all of the members who caught on to the prize drawing each month, thank you for your support. This month will be the last prize drawing for the newsletter. Let me know you read your newsletter, and I ll add your name to the drawing. We can look forward to a new look next year as Pam Hamilton takes over as editor. Happy Mother s Day! Janis Rodriguez
