1 AZALEA TRUMPET Winter/Early Spring 2013 Happy New Gardening Year! With all the warm weather I have been in my garden, weeding, can you believe it I was having a good time getting my hands dirty in January. Last night I was opening a tube of Stretch Mark Complex a wrinkle smoothing complex I don t know why, I read the ingredients. It read like a flower garden, almond, cocoa, mango seed butter, lavender and lemon with a touch of rose salvia and carrot root. Flowers help to make my garden beautiful. My home feels more welcoming with flowers and now my night cream fills my face with flowers. No wonder as garden club members we love flowers. You never know where you will find flowers. Molly Kimler and her team have wild and wonderful experience planned for us, February 12 at the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center. Dress casual and enjoy a taste of the Wild and Wonderful Camp. We have a tour of the Discovery Center after the meeting. Great food, great location, great fun, see you at the meeting. I know we will find more flowers and more, at the Deep South Convention in Savannah, please plan to attend March 24, 26. April 14-20, once again we celebrate Garden Week in Georgia. Don t forget to make plans to attend the Garden Club of Georgia Convention and meet your new District Director Peggy Tucker and our new President Suzanne Wheeler. Looks like another busy spring for the Azalea District. Happy Gardening and lots of love. Pat (Right: Artwork by Amazing Azalea Charolette Thompson is the Logo for DSR Convention & will be part of their raffle.)

The Library has been a partner with GCG since 2003 through our Landscape Initiative and Landscape and Garden Grant Program. The needs of the Library are many, from preserving 16 th century books to expanding and keeping the collection current. We are including a $25 donation from clubs and individuals in our GUIDE, and a Friend of the Cherokee Garden Library certificate will be sent to you for your contribution. Please consider placing the Cherokee Garden Library on your list of donations of $25 or more that your club makes each year, by checking the What to Send Where section of the GUIDE. In addition to the already extensive state-of-the-art archives, the Library is interested in expanding its collection of Georgia s garden club heritage. Your club can help by donating your scrapbooks, flower show schedules, or other garden club ephemera to the archives. 7 It's Up to Us Pat Donohue, Iris Garden Club Did you know... that there isn't a shortage of water? There's a shortage of clean water. Did you know... that Atlanta, Georgia and Las Vegas, Nevada have something in common with New Delhi, Bangkok, and Mexico City? All are plagued with serious water problems which are the result of environmental issues or soaring economic growth in addition to poor water management and, or poor water understanding. Did you know... that Augusta, Georgia would not exist but for the Savannah River. She is our lifeline and in just one day supplies over 1.4 million people with fresh drinking water, receives and dilutes over 18,000 tons of waste from industries and municipalities, and carries over 7000 containers through her port. Did you know... that we can solve our own water problems no matter where we live? No one else can solve them for us, nor is anyone else likely to. that we have an organization on the banks of the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia that works tirelessly to protect the health of the Savannah? That organization is the Savannah Riverkeeper. The SRK goals are simply stated as follows: 1) Restore water quality in the Savannah River, its lakes and tributaries, to fully support the uses of fishing, swimming, drinking, recreation and habitat protection. 2) Protect the Savannah River, its lakes and tributaries, through the establishment of buffers and the use of best management practices for activities that affect water quality. 3) Educate the people of the Savannah River Basin by creating a culture of water quality protection, inspiring pride in water resources and developing ways to protect those resources. And, in closing, I would like you to know that Chris Hannant, a student from the Savannah College of Art and Design, produced a powerful documentary titled Before Too Long and that it has been recognized by National Geographic. The video is less than ten minutes long and highlights conditions on the Savannah River. Watch it on online at and you'll learn why it's important for all of us to do whatever we can to preserve the health of our lifeline, The Savannah River.

8 Colette Tabs Betty Davis Just a reminder from Colette Tabs (aka-betty Davis), all clubs please bring or send your tabs collected to the Azalea District meeting on February 12th. The yearly district winners will be announced at the GCG State Convention in April, so gather those tabs from friends, family, co-workers, etc. and lets beat the other districts and win 1st. place this year. If you are unable to deliver tabs to me, the number of pounds you have collected, bettyboop2315@yahoo.com. Thanks. Please promote this anti-litter video to your garden club and encourage club members to use the video to spread the Garden Club of Georgia's anti-litter message and to encourage community clubs (Rotary, Business Professional Women, etc.) and youth clubs (Scouts, Junior Garden Clubs, etc.) to participate in anti-litter activities. A cleaner Georgia is always on our minds. The video may be checked out from Headquarters. There is no rental fee, just pay shipping and insurance. Call to make arrangements.

9 Azalea District Projects... Pull Tabs for Ronald McDonald House: Remember to turn in your pull tabs before April 1 st. We want Azalea District to regain its first place for collecting the most tabs in the state The Augusta Council of Garden Clubs collected pounds of tabs during 2012 and 42.6 pounds during January They challenge the rest of Azalea District to match or exceed that amount. Remember the tabs on soups and pet food as well as beverages. Community Gardens: Lincolnton Courthouse: Check out the new landscaping at the Lincolnton Courthouse. The Pine Needle Garden Club of Lincolnton purchased new shrubs after the Mayor asked them if they could do something to improve the landscaping. Hats off to our dedicated and community minded gardeners. Golden Harvest Masters Table: The daffodils are blooming and the cool season vegetables are growing. Mustard, chard, kale, lettuce, collards, radishes, and onions are ready to help supplement lunches prepared for each day. The next workday is Monday, February 18 th. Packets of seeds that you can grow at your home and bring the harvest to the Masters Table are available from Ginny Allen at vallenotr@aol.com or you can just Grow a Row for the Masters Table using your own vegetable seedlings. Planting and harvest information is available in County Extension publications.

10 Introduction to Floral Design: The first session of Introduction to Floral Design on Jan. 19 th was a success. 14 Please mark you calendar for Feb. 28 and plan a trip to Atlanta for Capitol Conservation Day when we partner with Georgia Conservation Voters for a legislative breakfast (invite your legislators), and Georgia Water Coalition for a legislative update and a visit to the Capitol wearing your green jacket/ sweater/scarf. Please encourage your fellow garden club members to attend as we would like to have a huge turnout! Please read the attached information just in from Georgia Water Coalition which references several bills that will need our attention this session--and there will be more. Also, please send Chandra@gawater.org your name, local info and name/s of your legislator/s and she, in turn, will send you breaking news and alerts for action. Also, please visit to read the 2013 Dirty Dozen list. A waterway near you is probably on the list of 12. GCG is a member of both Georgia Water Coalition, which numbers more than 180 organizations, and Georgia Conservation Voters, which supports a broad spectrum of environmental causes. Thank you. 15 The Nola M. Falcone Speaker Series of the Sacred Heart Garden Festival presents... Linda Copeland Speaks about her book Legends in The Garden Co-authored with Allan Armitage Tuesday, February 26, :00 AM If you have ever wondered about the origin of plant names, Legends in the Garden will provide some answers. Always passionate about horticulture, Linda Copeland began her studies in the field at UGA in She lives and gardens in Atlanta, and is involved with the Georgia Perennial Plant Association, the Southeastern Flower Show, Gardens for Peace, the Cherokee Garden Library and the flower guild at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Linda also coordinates garden tours abroad for Garden Vistas. This event is supported by the Nola M.
