3 President s Update Dear Gardening Friends, Summer is racing by. Soon it will be time for the State Fair and back to school. I have been busy responding to queries from the Regional and National Chairmen. This is just part of my job. In addition, I have been travelling state- and country-wide. The month of May saw me attending District Spring Meetings in the Central and Central West Districts. There followed a visit to Elkhart for the Four Winds GC annual spring plant sale. The National Convention in Washington DC finished the month of May. Upon return, haste was made to prepare for my first State Board Meeting. There had also been meetings with the Newsletter and Finance Committees. Pleasant times in June included a North Central spring meeting in Plymouth, an interesting flower show by the Mudlarks Garden Club, and a 60th anniversary celebration by Flower Lane Garden Club, also in Columbus. There were lots of garden walks. I attended the one created by the Irvington Garden Club because they invited me. This brings up an important reality: I need to have an invitation to your meeting, show, or celebration in order to attend. I am enjoying this kind of travel. I have some dates of up-coming events to share. The September Seminar in Princeton, IN will be happening soon. This has always been an enjoyable, enlightening experience. The Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc., is sponsoring a Tri-Refresher, October 2, 2011, in Grand Rapids, MI, in conjunction with The Central Region Annual Meeting. Members who need to renew their credentials in Environmental Studies, Conservation, and Gardening, and live in the North Districts, would be wise to attend. I am working with Maxine Huff, Linda McCafferty and Ruth Moorhead on our own Tri-Refresher which will be held in November. More on this (read on) in this issue. Hope to see some of you over the summer. Will be writing again in October. Rosie Springer TRI-REFRESHER COMING IN NOVEMBER Mark your Calendars now for the Tri-Refresher event on November 14th & 15th. It will be held at the Canyon Inn, McCormick Creek State Park, Spencer, IN. 4 Thanks for Volunteering by Rosie Springer I am writing this first part of the article because it illustrates the requests that come to me as State President, and how District and State Chairmen can be helpful. In early June, I received a call from Angela Arnold. She is in charge of the Children s Better Health Institute in Indianapolis. They were sponsoring a nutrition type camp for children, June 13th to July 30. They needed someone who could talk to the children about growing vegetables and explain why they were important in their diets. I remembered Myra Bottoms, our chairman of vegetables and herbs. She was willing and was connected with Angela to be our volunteer. Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself. Never pity yourself. 7 10 th World Flower Show Boston, Massachusetts June 15-19, 2011 From attendees: The show was amazing just impossible to describe. To me, that exhibit and the setup and organization made it the 8 th Wonder of the World. I am still amazed how the exhibitors created their arrangements...the time, energy and creativity that goes into each and every design is quite amazing. From volunteers: Thank you for the experience of a lifetime! It was truly so touching to see people from all over the world creating such incredible pieces of art. I felt as if I bonded with so many of the participants and know the others did as well. The Management Committee of the World Association of Flower Arrangers USA, Inc. thanks The Garden Club of Indiana, Inc. for its support in joining the League of Donors with a contribution of $1,000. TGCI was listed on a large Donor Board at the Show and also in the Donor Book inserted into the Show Program. There were approximately 550 designs, including the Honorary Exhibits. Each of the 30 member countries was invited to provide a design representative of that particular country for the Honorary Exhibits Division. These were non-competitive. All other designs were in competition in 30 classes. The only lighting in the World Trade Center was focused on the designs, making a stunning and spectacular presentation. The Preview Party was a festive occasion with over 1,000 in attendance. The Management Committee s husbands, who had supported their wives in this endeavor, were honored to cut the ribbon at the grand opening. Don St. Peters, Vice President of Fort Benjamin s Blossoms Garden Club in Indianapolis, was one so honored. The Preview Party, which took place on the show floor, featured various food stations with a theme of Taste of the States. Opening day of the show found many, many visitors and many, many tour bus groups lining the street as they anxiously awaited admittance. Several lectures, which were held on various topics, were well attended. Two American Demonstrations, presented by a talented group of six designers, were held on two different days and both were sold out. There was an International Demonstration featuring creative designers from Australia, Canada, Belgium, Pakistan and Ireland. On the final day of the show, the Grand Masters Demonstration featured a very talented group of five designers, who were from Scotland, Belgium, Holland, Spain and Germany. Their delightful personalities, creativity and extremely large designs resulted in a spectacular presentation at the Wang Theatre, an ornate historical building. A Gala Celebration was held on Saturday evening, and attendees gathered to party, congratulate one another on ribbons won, and express wishes to attend the 11 th World Flower Show in Ireland in Gerry St. Peters, Treasurer WAFA USA, Inc. The second picture is the Honorary Exhibit from Ireland, which will hold the next World Flower Show in 2014, and the third is a mannequin designed with all plant material. 8

9 Blue Star Memorial Program The Blue Star Memorial Program honors service men and women. This program began with the planting of 8,000 Dogwood trees by the New Jersey Council of Garden Clubs in 1944 as a living memorial to veterans of World War II. In 1945, the National Council of State Garden Clubs adopted the program and began a Blue Star Highway system, which covers thousands of miles across the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. A large metal Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was placed at appropriate locations along the way. The program was expanded to include all men and women who had served, were serving, or would serve in the armed services of the United States. Memorial Markers and By-Way markers were added to the Highway Markers, to be used at locations such as National Cemeteries, parks, veterans facilities and gardens. The Blue Star became an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners in homes for sons and daughters away at war, as well as in churches and businesses. This program has been active all through the years to the present, a fitting tribute always and especially now. Many states and regions have been very dedicated, but there is room for growth in some areas. She was a State Life Member, a Master Gardening Study Consultant, and the 1994 Honeywell Award Winner. She worked as a Elementary school principal for 38 years. She happily shared her gardens and knowledge with her club and community, featuring her gardens on the Tri Kappa Garden Walk 3 times. Her laughter and kindness will be missed by all who knew her. 10 And The Award Goes To Congratulations to Central West District for their NGC Certificate of Merit for their district publication. NGC has made it easier than ever to apply for NGC awards. NGC has a new application form and a new procedure for applying. The application form contains topics to be addressed, along with any supporting photographs. There is a three (3) page limit, using only the front page Binders and vinyl sheet protectors are no longer required or allowed Applications will not be returned (some exceptions) Applications may be submitted electronically to the State Awards Chairman and National Awards Chairman Forms are available on the NGC website, ( and from State Awards Chairman This application form should not be used for Awards of Excellence or Flower Show Achievement Awards Books of Evidence are only required for Awards of Excellence or Flower Show Achievement Awards.
