I guess having careers that revolve around it makes sense. We experienced spring, summer, winter, and back to summer all in one month. I'm sure a lot of you are seeing all of the frost damage to plants. I've had the heat on in the morning and the AC on in the afternoon. And for us allergy folk it's been miserable. Our April meeting was hosted and sponsored by Thrive Plant Health Care Solutions. Thank you to Chris Smith and Ron Rubin for hosting and sponsoring this meeting. We were privileged to have Lynn Batdorf, former curator of the National Arboretum s Boxwood Collection as our guest speaker. We all learned a lot about Boxwood during his presentation "Knowing and Growing Boxwood" (like there is no such word as Boxwoods). Thanks once again to Kip for the food and Doug for the beverages. Joe did another great job with the raffle. Our next board meeting will be on May 19th at the Chevy Chase Club. All members are invited to attend. Our jam-packed May 5th meeting is at McCrillis Gardens in Bethesda. Our host is Nancy Woods and our sponsor will be Nancy and her husband, Steve. Not only will we will have a tour of the gardens, we ll also be presenting our scholarship awards to this year s recipients Meg Smolinski who will receive the $1, Phil Lee Memorial Scholarship, and Cory Wesselman who will receive the $ D.C. Branch Scholarship. Afterward, Meg will be giving us a presentation on what she learned last summer during her internship at Monticello. I look forward to seeing everyone next week.

6 JOB OPENING JOB DESCRIPTION - DUMBARTON OAKS Position Title: Gardener (Temporary) Supervisor: Director of Gardens and Grounds Department: Gardens and Grounds Duration/Hours: 10 weeks/40 hour workweek, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Summary Assists in the general maintenance of the Dumbarton Oaks gardens and grounds. Actively participates in the daily care and maintenance of this historic 16-acre property including 10 acres of formal gardens and terraces. Works under the direction of the garden director and crew leaders, with particular responsibility for the specialty duties pertaining to the crews designated sections of the gardens. Duties and Responsibilities Performs general ground maintenance: planting, pruning, mowing, edging, fertilizer applications, pool and fountain care. Operates and maintains machinery and equipment used in performance of these duties. Assists in preparing the gardens for daily public visiting hours, including removal of debris from walkways and steps. Assists with other areas of the garden and special projects as needed. Perform related duties as required. Works independently and with supervision and as a member of a team. Qualifications Strong gardening skills and familiarity with gardening tools Must have a strong interest in horticulture and the environment Language skills Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing Conversational fluency in Spanish preferred Physical Demands Ability to work outside in various weather conditions Endurance to walk, stand, kneel, bend, stoop, and climb Strength to push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds.
