1 The Magnolia Messenger Spring 2016 Magnolia District V Officers District Director Willie Maxwell wmmaxwell@hotmail.com C0-Director Kathy Hicks kjhicks@windstream.net Recording Secretary Nancy Muggridge nanmugg@aol.com Corresponding Secretary Anne Mims a.mims@mchsi.com Treasurer Clare Jenkins clarejenkins@yahoo.com Parliamentarian Elizabeth Denham lizden@charter.net Chaplain Joyce Carreker jccrecker@bellsouth.net Editor Anne Mims a.mims@mchsi.com Growing in Knowledge, Service, and Friendships Dear Magnificent Magnolias, Can you believe that January has already come and gone and spring is just around the corner? So much to do! Even in the dead of winter, garden clubs keep busy. The Garden Club of Georgia Convention in Macon on April 13/14 is being hosted this year by Dogwood District. There will be information in this newsletter and I hope that you will make plans to attend. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening across Georgia, and to meet old friends and to make new ones. There will be workshops to attend and much to learn. The 2017 Expressions Calendar will be featuring Historic Buildings in our area and the Board has chosen the Springer Opera House in Columbus and the Camilla Depot. Other sites were beautiful, but they could only use two from each district. An earlier request was sent out for Recipes to be included in Expressions. They want recipes from well-known restaurants in our district or from well-known persons. Thanks to those of you who have helped me locate some of these. Thank you for your participation in Dollars Educate Scholars in January. This will help Magnolia District to honor a very deserving person with a Named Scholarship. You will be hearing more about this soon. Please continue to let me know of program ideas and speakers for garden club programs. We are always searching for new program ideas. Invite prospective members to your club meetings to hear some of your great programs. I look forward to reading your President s Reports and finding out some of the wonderful things your clubs are doing. Some of you may think that you have not been able to check off enough of the items to send it in, but that is not the case. The form changed this year. There may be items that you haven not yet done. Think of it as a learning experience for next year. PLEASE send it in no matter how many items you have been able to check off. I expect all clubs will get this done It is very encouraging to hear from so many clubs that are supporting our NGC, GCG, and DSR projects. It was good to see so many of you taking part in the information packed President s Workshop in November at Lake Blackshear and at the Plains Chautauqua Monarch Butterfly Workshop in October. I would love to hear about your pollinator programs and projects. If you are looking for a program on butterflies or bees, let me know as there is a CD for each available. Remember to take before and after pictures of your projects. I look forward to seeing you soon. Willie Willie Maxwell Magnolia District Director 1

3 Pollinators Excerpt s from Basic Horticulture Letter, written by Gail Bethe, The Happy Gardener, Red Bud District, Send questions to gail.berthe@gmail.com. Pollinator Plants are those plants which efficiently produce pollen readily available for the birds and bees to visit and to find HEALTHY NURISHMENT. Pollinators are the insects, butterflies, birds which visit flowers to eat, to rest, maybe just to show off. Where shall we plant our Pollinator Garden containers, a plot of land whatever the size small, medium or HUGE. Make it something you can enjoy and the pollinators will thank you. Pollinators are essential to the reproduction of 75% of all flowering plants in the world and 1/3 of the food we eat! And the pollinators are dying. JOIN US "Service in Action Leap into Action" National Garden Club President Sandra H. Robinson Beautiful View Garden Club in Buena Vista had a program in January 2016 about the Community Wildlife Project sponsored by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Several of the members had previously completed the backyard certification application and the remaining members completed the application at the club meeting. Nesting boxes (bird houses) were made by Troy Fitzpatrick and students from the Floyd County School College and Career Academy. The nesting boxes were made and delivered with the help of three special garden club members, Diane Harbin, Kathy Donahue, and Jean O'Shields. These ladies coordinated the delivery of the completed nesting boxes to Ann Howell of the Beautiful View Garden Club. This project was successful because GCC members worked together across the state from Rome to Buena Vista. Beautiful View Garden Club GGC members and subscribing members were involved. The nesting boxes were transported on December 15th. The Beautiful View Garden Club appreciates the effort of the special people who made this project a success. 3

Phone: Senate Bill 36 passed the Senate in To become a law it must pass the House. Under Ground Protection Water Bill Georgia has clean water, But clean water is at risk Current laws and regulations do not provide enough protections for our groundwater. There are no adequate state requirements for monitoring, testing or reporting the volume or extent of contaminated waters that reach an aquifer by any means, including injection. People who wish to use or otherwise impact groundwater typically don t have to provide reliable, scientific, and site-specific information explaining how or if their activities may negatively impact groundwater quality. Government agencies do not review permits often enough to ensure our groundwater is not polluted. The Seed Catalog Invasion As you look through the new catalogs consider comparing their statements with good reference resources such as allamericanselections.org. For this area no resource can be better than Georgia Gold Medal Plants. This is an annual listing of the best ornamental native plants, annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees available for growing in our climate conditions as rated by the state Botanical Garden of Georgia, UGA Cooperative Extension, University faculty members, professional nurserymen and flower growers, garden retailers and landscape professionals in the Georgia. The Columbus Council of Garden Clubs Supports Damascus Way Home for Women and Children Elizabeth Denham Wins At Perry Flower Show! Paul Berry, a Bee Keeper Spoke to the Columbus Council of Garden Clubs in January at the Wynn House. Paul has 100 acres near Box Springs where he has about 50 hives. He collected about 50 gallons of honey last year and 20 swarms of bees. He usually gets about 200 gallons. There are almost no feral bees anymore. They were wiped out by a predator from Asia. Bees are making a come back because of beekeepers. 1/3 of our food is pollinated by bees. Bees are the only insect that makes a food that we eat. Honey will never spoil as long as it does not get wet. Member of Chattahoochee Beekeepers; they meet monthly, alternating between Oxbow Meadows and the Extension Office downtown Columbus. Phone: Paulbeekeeper@yahoo.com. 9

10 Dogwood Garden Club in Sumter County President Elaine Henderson and members Meda Krenson and Sylvia Roland, who are also members of the Sumter County Board of Education, used a grant to beautify Sumter Elementary School. See pictures below. Also, out of their own pockets and sweat the members worked on the pond at Sumter County Primary School and Americus-Sumter High School. B Feed the Birds and Appreciate Our Wildlife The bird feeder s picture on the left is included to show a product that is available to feed the birds and to also prevent the squirrels from eating the food. When a bird wants to eat, they place themselves on the perch. However, when a squirrel gets on the perch they are heavy enough to cause the grid to slip down and prevent them from having access to the bird seed. I have found this type of feeder to be most effective. Blogger Alan, from Macon 10

12 President s Workshop and Tri-Refresher Course Bog Garden State Parks hosted the State President s Workshop and Tri-Refresher, ACTION in the Environment, on November 12 th and 13 th at Georgia Veterans State Park in Cordele, Georgia. Eighty-eight workshop participants stayed very busy learning about a wide variety of Environmental efforts related to gardening, landscaping, and the general environment. Each topic and project highlighted one of the areas of specific interest from our National President, the Deep South Region Director, and our own State President. After learning more about the plight of the amphibians and the direct relationship of our actions to their health and well-being, participants dropped leaves of Commitment to Garden for Wildlife in an amphibian bog garden donated by Magnolia District. This bog garden was relocated from the workshop setting to an outdoor setting in the State Park where it will be enjoyed by a local amphibian population and serve to educate Park visitors about how to create their own gardens to support the amphibian population.
