On May 19, 2017, more than 600 garden patrons and community leaders are expected to attend Garden Soiree: Garden of Glass, the grand opening of this highly anticipated summer exhibit and the Garden s signature fundraiser of the year. With a special performance by the iconic band, The Samples, Garden Soiree is a not-to-be-missed event to celebrate the Garden under the stars and in style. The evening will feature festive cocktails and hors d oeuvres, exhibit viewing, performances, and of course, fabulous live music. Founded in 1859, the Garden is a center for botanical research and science education, as well as a 79-acre oasis of beautiful horticultural display in the city of St. Louis.

3 GARDEN OF GLASS EXHIBIT INFORMATION The Missouri Botanical Garden is pleased to announce a summer exhibition of fused glass works by artist Craig Mitchell Smith. These larger-than-life displays will include 24 installations within the Climatron and five unique installations across the Garden including one at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House in Chesterfield. DAY AND NIGHT Garden of Glass offers both day and night experiences for Garden visitors. Impressive installations entice visitors to the Climatron as they stroll past The Orange Blossoms in the Linnean House, The Muses in Latzer Fountain on Spoehrer Plaza, and Making a Wish, a massive dandelion with seeds suspended from trees along the tram path. The Climatron itself will be entirely transformed by immense glass displays that span from the top of the dome and appear around every bend. Each unique glass installation is being crafted specifically for the Garden. During the day, these installations will complement the natural beauty around them. At night, these displays are transformed with dramatic lighting into a tropical, magical experience. Plants and flowers from the Garden s collection will be honored in these glass creations, from the watery Blue Lotus to the striking Bird of Paradise to the succulent Blooming Night Cactus and beyond. ABOUT THE ARTIST Craig Mitchell Smith s love of glass began with a class at Delphi Studios, where he envisioned new ways to create, fuse, and form original glass sculpture designs. In 2007, his glass-fusing process and home garden gallery were featured on Look What I Did, a program on HGTV. Craig has since curated several shows at botanical gardens and public venues across the country, including Michigan State University, Dow Gardens, Walt Disney World s Epcot, Norfolk Botanical Garden, and Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. He has opened a gallery in Lansing, Michigan s Old Town, and conducts classes at his studio about his unique method for creating sculptures. ABOUT THE GLASS Craig s unique approach to kiln-formed glass combines fusing, texturing, slumping, and cold working to create the pieces he displays. Often working in collaboration with metal artists, Craig has engineered both small and large-scale glass-andmetal sculptures to enhance nature. Craig s pieces emphasize the natural beauty around them. His work is enhanced by his knowledge of set lighting and design, painting, floral work, and interior design.

Spring Poppies of Oz - 20 Clusters of THE EXHIBIT: IN THE CLIMATRON Most of the pieces for Garden of Glass will be housed in the famous Climatron. Opened in 1960 as the first geodesic dome to be used as a conservatory, the Climatron has been named one of the 100 most significant architectural achievements in the U.S. The Climatron has no interior support columns. Tropical plants grow to the top of the dome, and a winding path takes visitors through dense, lush foliage. They wander past sparkling waterfalls, rocky cliffs, a river aquarium, and a high bridge. Each installation of Garden of Glass has been designed to complement a specific location within the Climatron. Some will be visible above all the plants, even hanging from the dome itself. Others will be revealed in a burst of color around the next bend. Many pay homage to the plants permanently on display in the Climatron.
