3 Mandate, Mission and Vision Creation Call for the federation and unification of the disparate rainwater harvesting (RWH) movement around the world, promote RWH as a valuable resource, and build on achievements in this field to fulfil the MDGs. Mission Promote rainwater as a tool for CC adaptation To promote the management of the rainwater as a water resource viewed in the framework of the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Vision A large use of rainwater in every field of life

5 Pillar 1: Project Implementation The Blue Schools Programme at a glance 1. Enhance the development & improvement of living conditions in schools with no access to safe water or decent sanitation facilities. 2. Ensure wholesome conditions within schools to improve the health and dignity of children 3. Create a setting to bring up a new generation, sensitive to environmental issues. Rainwater harvesting systems provide 2.5 litres of safe water per person per day Adequate sanitation is introduced through the construction of toilets and urinals, separate for girls and boys. Rainwater is collected from the roof for hand washing To ensure the sustainability of the project & results, students and teachers are given training (below) and PACT Committees are created (right) PACT Committees are made up of parents, authorities, children and teachers, and they are responsible for looking after the new facilities Other activities include vegetable gardens, volleyball courts and reforestation every child plants and looks after their own tree

6 Pillar 1: Project Implementation Results of the Blue Schools Programme (Dec. 2013) 53 schools, orphanages and healthcare centres have access to water and sanitation: 3,373,000 litres of water are provided every year: 384 toilets and 175 urinals have been built: 24,608 trees planted and 32 vegetable gardens created: Over 21,740 students and teachers have received training:

7 Pillar 2: Capacity building and awareness raising Young Rainwater Harvesters Awareness raising activities to promote and teach the younger generations about the importance of rainwater and its management Capacity Building We train people on RWH techniques so they can use these simple and low cost means to provide a water supply in their regions Raindrops Geneva Award An international art competition to promote the use and benefits of RWH within the general public Awareness Raising Activities to raise awareness of RWH in order to increase the use and management of this vital resource

8 Pillar 3: Empowering the RWH movement IRHA aims to create synergies between the major stakeholders in the Rainwater Harvesting sector at international, regional, national and local levels. 143 members from 50 countries around the world: Members include organisations, private sector companies, individuals and journalists

9 Pillar 4: Political positioning of RWH Promotion of rainwater harvesting We attend and participate in international events in order to promote the contribution of RWH to the MDGs International meetings on rainwater harvesting We organise meetings and seminars around different themes related to RWH Political work with project implementation countries We work with local and national authorities of the countries where we implement our projects, and hold meetings with ambassadors to these countries
