1 Santa Clara Valley Orchid Society Established 1951 Helping You to Become a Better Grower May 2010 SCVOS Newsletter (please note that links in electronic copies are functional Speaker Notes On May 5 th, you ll have what most people would call the best opportunity of the entire year to not only advance your collection, but to advance your knowledge of orchids. This is the perfect opportunity to get some fantastic new plants at absolute bargain prices!! That s because it s auction time!! Our auction will feature auctioneers and fellow SCVOS members Jeff Trimble and Oliver Colmenar, so it should be a fun and entertaining event. The auction is a wonderful chance to purchase great plants for next-to-nothing, so if your greenhouse is looking a little empty, come by to fill it up. If you ve never been to an auction (or if it s been awhile), there are typically between plants, on all the front tables and on more tables stretching back the entire length of the wall. There s a lot of plants! Ed Nazzal is the auction chair, and he assures that that this year will offer a bumper crop of nice divisions and seedlings donated by our society members. A number of members are trying to downsize their collections (me too) and so there should be some nice stuff!! Doug Pulley and Kreg Martin, both of whom typically put in great plants at the show, have both told me that they re trying to cut back a little. Time for the rest of us to take up the slack! Every year a number of plants at the monthly show and tell table and at the Annual Show come notably from purchases at the auction. It is an experience that offers something for everyone; remember that your support of the auction and other society events makes sure that we have an excellent lineup of speakers, activities, and plants for next year. The auction comprises a substantial proportion of our annual budget, so please make plans to participate in this tradition and benefit from it as well the society needs your help! C. loddigesii Sweetheart AM/AOS Here s the auction rules in the off chance you ve forgotten: 1. Only SCVOS Members can sell plants, but everyone is welcome to buy. 2. Orchids only for sale, no other plants. 3. Place a tag on each plant with the following information: Identifying number made from the seller s initials and a numerical number (i.e. AB12) for the auction staff to track purchases. Please consider donating plants it helps the society greatly!! Name of the plant (and parentage) if known. Cultural information and color, and any other information deemed prudent (remember, how well you advertise them determines how much you ll be able to get for them). Minimum bid if any. 4. Maximum of 20 plants per member. 5. Make a list of the plants with their identifying numbers and leave a copy at the auction desk; use the attached blank for help. 6. SCVOS members only can sell (and no, you may not join just before the auction). 7. Anyone can buy plants, so bring friends!! 8. Plants to be at the hall between 6:30 and 7:00, auction starts promptly at 7:30 pm, if not a little earlier. Please come out and support your club!! The more plants you have, the better you ll be able to experiment and find the perfect way of growing them!! As a reminder, there s no opportunity table or show and tell this month. 3 For those of you who missed the March meeting, you missed one of this year s very best, both in terms of the speaker, for which see below, and in terms of the show and tell table. Dave Smitt submitted these pics of the show and tell portion of the evening, beginning with Jerry Rodder;s Lc. Canhamiana J.G., a fine cross of Laelia purpurata and C. mossiae. Next is Ann Stuart with some adorable little dendrobium; even if I can t stand the growth habit, her enthusiasm for the genus is infectious. I was scared for her and Tom Mirenda to talk Tom likes dendrobiums too much as well!! Lastly, in my opinion the finest thing on the table was this Lycaste, whose name I didn t write down because I was so taken with its color I didn t bother to look at the label. This, folks, is the finest colored Lycaste I ve ever seen, and I ve seen quite a number. Wow, Jerry well done with this one. And here s Tom getting a little friendly with my presentation remote. I bet if I had told you this would be a presentation about pollination, you would not have shown up. Actually, I thought Tom was going to speak about the collection at the Smithsonian, which would have been an interesting topic as well, but he told me that he didn t feel like it and instead wanted to speak about pollination. I told him that was a boring topic, and let me be the first to admit I was totally wrong. It was so nice to see him he s a good friend of mine from back east, and maybe based on how good his reviews were on the trip out here, this should be a yearly experience. Goodness knows Tom has both the knowledge and presentation ability to keep us occupied for quite some time. What do you all think of a repeating speaker? It certainly makes one of my jobs easier Thanks to Ed for the photos! 3

4 Not many people look at Bletilla striata up close, but it certainly is beautiful. One of few outdoor growing, terrestrial(-ish) orchids, Bletillas are very fast-growing, clumping plants which bloom in early spring and go dormant in mid-summer. This picture is from Dave Smitt. The nicest clump of these I ve ever seen is all over the back yard of former SCVOS President Al Testa. And just to give you some idea of what s in the mericlone pipeline, here s this beauty I pulled off slippertalk.com, one of my favorite websites: Ed Nazzal took this picture of Masd. veitchiana at the Santa Barbara show. I ll be making a presentation on veitchiana and other that improve it in hybrids in the near future for a judging seminar for elevation to fully accredited AOS judge. Do you all want to hear about that as well? This is Bletilla Soryu (or Blue Dragon ), a coerulea form apparently pretty common in Japan. Boy I can t wait until I have a yard Maybe that would be an interesting presentation Bletillas, Calanthes, and other things you can grow in the ground outside. Here s one of mine as filler Paph. Dr. Doolittle Jubilation B/CSA from Orchids Royale. Doctor Doolittle is a cross of Inca 'Penn Valley' and St. Helier, an Eric Young paph from Diversion x Greenstede. Greenstede is a beautiful paph with yellowish-orange base colors and a spotted yellow dorsal. I think yellows with heavy spots are so within reach - it's something I'd like to get to at some point. There's been some progress already: Greenstede x San Francisco makes Kannami 'Mishima' HCC/JOS that I saw a picture of once, and it's close to the right colors. This cross was registered by Orchids Royale in

5 Ascocenda Meda Arnold Crimson Glow HCC/AOS is a cross of the red Ascocentrum curvifolium and the purple Vanda Rothschildiana. (Are you sure this is labeled correctly? Most of these are dark red ) Oliver Colmenar has a soft spot for Vandas; not an easy thing to grow in San Francisco due to the extreme heat and humidity they prefer. In Washington D.C., they used to spend summers outside. I wonder if you can get around that hmm Vanda coerulescens is part of the answer to how do you grow Vandas in San Jose. This remains small, is very floriferous, has a nice fragrance, and can grow intermediate, since it enjoys a wide distribution throughout India up to foothills of the Himalayas. It s important that Vandas be small that makes it easier to deal with them if you live anywhere other than Florida. This one is a cutie!! Thanks Oliver! The plantier among you will no doubt recognize that this is not an orchid. Does it count if it was purchased at an orchid nursery? Oliver sent this in as well it s the yellow variety of Leucospermum cordifolium, an Australian native and closely related to Proteas. Oliver and Peter purchased this from Orchids of Los Osos at a Paph Guild meeting a few years back. Makes me wish I had a yard. And here s how you get the rest of the way cross it with the snow-tolerant Neofinetia falcata and make Vandafinetia Blaupunkt. All pretty and blue, floriferous, easy to grow, and tolerant of low temperatures. I bet this one is a carefree addition to your collection, Oliver! 5

6 Ann Stuart sent in this Bulbophyllum arfakianum; this is related to the more commonly seen Bulb. grandiflorum or Bulb. bufordiense, both of which have interesting flowers but without the spectacular markings of this. Native to low elevations mountains in New Guinea, it s not particularly difficult to grow warm and wet but it is diffuclt to find for sale. I m so pleased to be able to show it to you all big thanks to Ann for providing something so weird. Acineta superb is a spectacular Stanhopea relative from Columbia and Venezuea that grows in intermediate conditions in midelevations. It s beautiful flowers evoke a canary, and indeed this is called Periquito in Columbia, meaning, little parrot. This is a rather difficult to grow ; this is a particularly good clone thanks to Ed for the photo Yeah it s that time of year. The show s over, things are more relaxed, we can think some about things to change for next year and offer big thanks to all the people that helped this year. Blooming season for Paphs and Cyms is nearly over time to repot and prep for the growing season, time to think about the garden. Here s to another great season thanks SCVOS!! 6

7 59 th Annual SCVOS Show and Sale March 26-28, 2010 The new sales chair surrounded by his handiwork. Congrats on another year of selling out!! Cyms in the show area. Of all the years I ve done the show, this might have been the best year ever for Cyms!! Some views of the sales area. Peter did an excellent job managing this section, and man was it ever a relief for me to not have to think about it. Everyone got great plants, and, as far as I could tell, sales went great!! 8 Ann Stuart s beautiful display. Matt Bond s display excellent mix of genera! Barry Zimmerman put in a display for the first time at an SCVOS Show this year nice!! Kreg Martin s display a riot of color and and tons of Bulbophyllums, of all things. My display a little late in the season for me. I was so impressed with everyone s displays. It takes so much work to put one in, and to see so many people do all that work to make our show spectacular was very moving for me as a show chair. Thanks so much to you for agreeing to put them in. I have high hopes for next year And of course our display winner, Eanghak s beautiful and huge creation, even if he did have a little help from lots of other people donating plants. Ok I m kidding because I m jealous. Congratulations on another year of fantastic display. I know it was a ton of work, but wow such a great effect wonderful!! 8

9 Peter and Oliver of course have to buck the mold of the horizontal. Nice work guys makes fitting everything in the newsletter a real pain. Sandi Fox and Marie Lofton put in a display for the first time as well!! Yay!! It was so themed maybe we should have a show theme What are your opinions? Display pix by Eric Hunt. Lastly, the wonderful inflorescence of this year s best in show, Cym. Keiko Kageyama Epigarden, one of very few cyms I d ever consider actually owning. This is Eanghak s plant, which makes this like the 5 th straight year of his winning best in show with a freaking cymbidium. Come on now!! Be more creative judges!! Kidding again - nice work with this one Eanghak!! Thanks to Dave, Oliver, Ann, Ed, and Eric for sharing some pictures. These last few months have been great so many pictures makes the newsletter much more interesting and so colorful and edumacational (and long)! Feel free to send me your opinions of your plants as well. I especially like hearing what you think about your own plants. Please keep them coming!! Your photos and thoughts submitted to me or Ed Nazzal become a valuable part of the tradition of the SCVOS: helping people become better growers. 9

10 Future Speakers June 2 nd : Dennis Olivas There s nothing wrong with growing Phals!! There seems to be this preconception that Phals are for beginners and are not worth growing for their own merit. Nothing could be further than the truth. Dennis will share with us some of his favorites favorite, hybrids, and new plants with the finest Phal Phaleanopsis violacea in their background. He will also share some good cultivation techniques, which I m particularly interested to see based on the fact that he grows unheated. Should be a lot of fun any time with Dennis always is! See you there!! Upcoming Events Wow what a great show!! Thanks so much to all of you who brought in plants, volunteered, brought your friends, or purchased plants. Your help is fantastic! I had such a nice time this year being more of a spectator - already with thoughts on how to improve for next year! Such spectacular plants and participation -.thanks so much!! We raised just shy of $3000 in profits from the show, which will help continue to raise the quality of speakers and presentations with the SCVOS. As show judging chair, I d like to offer my congratulations to all the trophy and ribbon winners for this year. Also, I would also like to personally thank Ann Stuart, Eanghak Quach, Kreg Martin, Peter Brown and Oliver Colmenar, Matt Bond, Sandi Fox and Marie Lofton, and Barry Zimmerman for putting in spectacular displays for this year s event if you didn t get a chance to see them, there are pix below. I highly encourage all of you who enter a few plants in the show to consider putting together a group of orchids arranged for effect to heighten the overall effect of next year s production. From my co-chair position, lastly I d like to thank all the people who helped out this year from the bottom of my heart. It s your tireless efforts that make the show a success and most importantly make the show fun. In particular, we had a number of members contribute in new and different ways this year. Thanks to you all!! If you d like to participate more in next year s show, consider taking on some committee responsibility. The show is broken into multiple categories of ways you can help. Some of the various committees include things like judging, staging, hospitality, and sales. Would any of those be a good fit for you? I sure hope so, and I hope you ll consider volunteering!! I don t think there is a more fun job with the SCVOS such a great opportunity to directly participate in our society s operations and to get to know the other members please take advantage of it and become a better grower with help from the SCVOS!!, There are three big SCVOS-related events in the months to come; I hope you ll try to make them all! 11 Orchid Facts Epidendrum (Epi) is the largest new world tropical orchid genus and the second largest in the orchid family. This genus was named by Carolus Linnaeus in The name comes from two Greek words that translate to upon trees. Its name refers to its mostly epiphytic growth habit, although a few are terrestrial and are rarely lithophytic. It has 1,100 ranging from South Carolina to Argentina. Most are found in the Andes, between 1,000 and 3,000 m. Epidendrums grow in varied environments from humid jungles to dry tropical forests, from sunny, grassy slopes to cool cloud forests. Epidendrums come in different sizes and appearances. They have racemose inflorescences, typical of the colorful Epi hybrids we are so familiar with. Some inflorescences occur as corymbs or panicles, like a bouquet of flowers with a flat top. Flowers are small- to medium-sized and not usually showy. Inflorescences are frequently dense, like the flowers on the Epi hybrids. Many have fragrance. Flowers may be borne once on new inflorescences or over the years on the same inflorescence. Seeds are contained in a rounded capsule (correct botanical term for pod), with three ridges. Through the years many genera have been classified and/or reclassified as synonyms to Epidendrum. One example is Prostechea and Anacheilum. These have been due to obvious structural differences. The reported 400 new described lately may suffer the same fate of reclassification as the ones that preceded them. Epidendrums readily hybridize with orchids in the Cattleya tribe, hence the genus Epicattleya. Adamara is a hybrid that has Brassavola, Cattleya, Epidendrum, and Laelia in its parentage. The type for this genus is Epidendrum nocturnum (the "Night-scented Epidendrum"), and is pictured below (from the IOSPE). - Oliver Colmenar SCVOS Online Raceme Corymb or panicle This genus has the following general characteristics: a slit rostellum, that part which separates the anther from the stigma in the column of the orchid flower. the lip is adnate to or connected to the column. 4 pollinia (which may sometimes have 2 inferior ones), rarely 2 pollinia. their stems can be erect, pendent, or creeping, which are characteristically reed-like, simple or branching, or may be pseudobulbs, or thickened stems. 12 Rainwater and Orchids I received an interesting article submission from Brad Daniels, who is affiliated with rainsavers.com, a company encouraging rainwater harvesting. Rainwater is wonderful for orchids, so I ve decided to include the article in this month s newsletter, with the hopes that some of you might want to put it to use. I m aware of Tanya Lam and Bud Segraves in our society using rainwater. Does anyone else? From Brad: I want to bring you up to date on a new push of an old concept: RWH or rain water harvesting. Some of you already use rain barrels for you gardening, others may not be familiar with the wide choices today. Components have come a long way and the industry has developed attractive polyethylene barrels that are a far cry from the old wine barrels of the past. Rain water harvesting is nothing new, and with today s materials, large amounts of water can be stored and used depending on your available space. Barrels come in 50, 55, or 65 gallons. Tanks as small as 105 gallons up to 10,000 are now available and are polyethylene, which lasts for many years and requires very little maintenance. Barrels are being sold at retail hardware stores and by local companies doing installations, and tanks are sold wherever there are big agricultural operations, like in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Other components that divert the water from your downspout are available which make the job much simpler, such as stands to elevate the barrel, faucets for hoses, and leaf screens. The purity of rain cannot compare to tap water. Rain does not have any of the chemicals normally found in tap water, such as fluoride, chlorine or iron. This year s heavy rainfall is helping our reservoirs and lakes. Imagine the savings to your water bill if you had been collecting rain. Beyond using the rain for gardens, stored water can be used to wash cars and clean tools. This in turn reduces the demand on the municipal water system, and prevents some runoff which takes pollution to the Bay. Likewise, erosion is reduced due to less water running down hillsides. Twenty percent of the power consumed in California goes to transporting water. That is a significant amount and can be cut by widespread deployment of rain water collection. Gravity feed does not produce much pressure, but high pressure is not needed when using a hose on a garden or our beloved orchids. Cities are taking a stand to offer incentives for residents: they have been mandated by the State to reduce consumption by 20% over the next few years. Cities of Palo Alto and San Francisco offer rebates for residents installing barrels. Counties are offering residents other methods of water conservation on their websites. The Santa Clara Valley Water district offers workshops on water conservation, irrigation and rain water harvesting. Barrel water is used multiple times per season. We often have dry winter months. The rain water is used up during these months and refilled with the next rain. A 1000 sq. ft roof with 1 of rainfall can produce 600 gallons of water. Many of the homes in the South Bay are two- three times that size, producing much more collection ability. In other parts of the country, water rationing is much more critical. Some Menard Texas Residents do not have municipal water or wells. They rely on rain water. The population has grown, exhausted the underground aquifers, so the wells have gone dry. On February 2, the L.A. Times wrote an article about the city council considering mandating RWH in all new housing construction. Grey water use can greatly reduce the demand on water systems. Forty percent of the fresh water into a home goes down the toilet. So if you are considering harvesting your rain, it benefits more than just orchids. If you are looking for sources for materials, Scotts Valley Sprinkler and Pipe have a wide variety of tanks and material to choose from. A local company, Rainsavers, sells and installs rain barrels.
