7 Ross residence: 2336 N. Fillmore St., Arlington Overview Of Proposed Work This is a request by John & Margaret Ross, the owners of the property at 2336 N. Fillmore St., in the Maywood Historic District, which was constructed in 1997 in a four-square style, to: Replace the current flagstone patio that has become a safety hazard due to tree roots uprooting the stones with a new Carderock Pennsylvania flagstone patio and expand the patio footprint by ~2-1/2 feet to ~ 32 x18 from the current ~29 6 x15 6 by removing the current planter boxes that border three sides of the patio and replace with flagstone up to the current retaining wall. Replace the current wood railroad tie retaining wall, which is showing signs of deteriorating, with a new retaining wall made of cement block and faced with Carderock Sawn Ashler Veneer Stone. This stone will be in keeping with the stone retaining wall in the front of the house. Add a new pergola over the north side of the patio. The pergola will be made of fir and painted white to match the current trim color on our home. Replace the current 4-foot picket fence on the north and south sides of the patio with a new 7-foot tall privacy fence. The privacy fence will follow Maywood design guidelines and be made of 1 x 6 cedar boards and painted white to match the current trim color on our home.

Fillmore St., Arlington For the patio we are proposing to use Carderock Pennsylvania Variegated Color Flagstone from Tri-State Stone in Bethesda to replace our current Pennsylvania flagstone patio. The patio stone will be similar to the current patio below but with fewer grays and a mix of green/gray and a few browns to better match the paint color of our home, closely resembling the current patio. The photo of new flagstone (below left) is from a job built by our contractor (Café Amouri, 107 E. Church St, Vienna) and the exact mix of colors we would like to use. Fillmore St., Arlington For the retaining wall we are proposing to use Carderock Sawn Ashler natural Veneer Stone from Tri-State Stone in Bethesda to replace our current deteriorating wood 6 x6 railroad tie retaining wall. This will better complement the stone retaining wall at the front of the house. The retaining will be made of concrete block faced with the same colors as the Caderock Veneer Stone used on a project by our contractor (Café Amouri, 107 E. Church St, Vienna) and the photo shows the exact mix of colors we would like to use, which will complement both the color of our home and the flagstone for the patio (also seen in the photo below). 14 Materials/Scope of Work: Privacy Fence Ross residence: 2336 N. Fillmore St., Arlington The privacy fence would replace the 4-foot high picket fence along the north and south sides of the rear yard/patio. The fence would also be along back yard so it is consistent. It will be 7 feet tall and made of 1x6 vertical Cedar boards as shown in the drawing below. The fence would be painted to match the current trim color on our house (Behr Premium Plus Exterior Semi-Gloss Enamel Ultra Pure White). See drawings for views of side and rear yard fence. The fence would look similar to this fence in photo below but would be painted white to match the trim on the house (Behr Premium Plus Exterior Semi-Gloss Enamel Ultra Pure White). New privacy fence would be same style as this fence but painted white

Fillmore St., Arlington The pergola would be made of wood (fir) and be painted to match the current trim color on our house see existing photos (Behr Premium Plus Exterior Semi-Gloss Enamel Ultra Pure White). See drawings for details. The specs for pergola include: 6 x6 posts, 6 x12 beams, 3 x6 run flats and 1.5 x1.5 top dressings. We expect it would have a similar feel to the pergolas in the photos below (But without the lights of the top photo or the stunning lake view of the bottom). See drawings for details.

Fillmore St., Arlington For the patio we are would like to place a Napoleon Galaxy GSS48 fireplace insert (16-1/2 h x 47-1/2 w) into the retaining wall (west side of patio to the right of the stairs up to back yard as shown in the drawings. Note: Will not have chrome trim We would not use the optional chrome trim surround shown on the fireplace above, but would use it without as noted in this photo below. It's a three stem 10 inch river birch. It's a nice tree, and there are options to preserve it, while still having a workable patio. These include using clean structural stones to raise the grade, and expanding the tree space somewhat. Of course I can't require that, but I'd be happy to provide some options for preserving the tree canopy. County Forester Vincent Verweij inspected the tree and wrote in an email (enclosed) that this tree does not fall under historic preservation protection.

Also the tree is laying on our roof and gutter. County Forester Vincent Verweij inspected the tree and wrote in an (enclosed) that this tree does not fall under historic preservation protection. While County Forester Verweij suggests possibly raising patio with stone, three contractors recommended removing the tree because the same thing will happen again in a few years as the tree continues to grow and the roots would push up again after we put thousands of dollars into the new patio. That s why we want to remove the tree. These flagstones were once all level with each other. Now they are hazardous to walk on.
