1 Over the Garden Gate Monthly Newsletter Clinton County Master Gardeners Volume 2 Issue 7 July 2011 Editors: Ralph Stanford and Nora Stanford. Addresses: nora161@mchsi.com Published on the first Monday of the month. To submit an article it must be sent by as a Microsoft Word attachment to the above address. To be accepted for publication in the next newsletter, articles must be received 10 days before the first Monday of the month. Articles will be accepted or rejected at the discretion of the editors. Editor-in-training is MG Carol Machael. For the next month, please send all information to be included to Carol at cgm104@hotmail.com, as well as Ralph and Nora. A Note From Your Chairman There was a major Master Gardener event in May that I failed to comment on in the June news letter. That was the Plant Sale. The total amount raised from the sale was $3164. This number is down from recent years, but considering the weather that weekend this is a great number. Thank you to all who worked the sale or contributed plants for the sale. A special thanks to Stan Bates and Brenda Council for chairing the sale. As noted in the last news letter, July brings the Clinton County Fair and Master Gardener day at the fair. That day will be July 13. All Master Gardeners are urged to attend. There will be a Container Contest, a noon lunch, and education seminars after lunch. You will be able to receive education hours for the seminars. This is a great chance to get to better know members of the organization. Admission to the fair that day is free, and each Master Gardener will receive two tickets for lunch. Margo Hansen, director at the Arb, and one who sells at the farmers markets talked to the education committee about the fact that many people who attend farmers markets purchase items but do not know how to prepare or store items. The education committee worked this winter putting together a recipe book to be handed out at local farmers markets. Size of the book is about 3 x 4 and covers produce from asparagus to turnips. Each page has the name of a vegetable, and then sub headings of Storage, Recipe, and Hints. If you think about it, many who attend farmers markets hear about the value of fresh produce, but did not grow up with gardens like the generations before. The Extension Council has appropriated money to use in landscaping the front of the Extension Office in DeWitt. Bill Gustafson designed the plan. The Extension Council agreed with the plan at their June meeting. The Advisory Board discussed doing the work some time in August. Master Gardeners and the Extension Council will provide the labor. 2 Volume 2 Issue 7 Page 2 July 2011 A Note From Your Chairman Continued from previous page LeAnne and I attended the Garden Walk today. Very Nice. Thank you to committee chairperson, Kathy Sander, and committee members Nora Stanford and Norma McDonnell. Also thanks to our members who opened their gardens to the residents of Clinton and the surrounding area, and to those who hosted/sold tickets at each site. Kathy said that about 120 people attended. In this issue there are several articles detailing Master Gardener involvement during the Clinton County Fair. Consider attending the fair and entering the Vegetable Contest or the Container Contest. Hope to see you at the Fair Willard Chairperson The Clinton County Master Gardeners 2011 garden walk was a huge success this year. A big THANK YOU to my committee Norma McDonnell, Nora Stanford, and Ralph Stanford. Also I would like to thank the Master Gardeners who donated their gardens and the volunteers the day of the walk. We made $ towards the Master Gardeners scholarship fund. Chairman Kathy Sander Puzzle The OVER THE GARDEN GATE PUZZLE CONTEST which runs each month has received as FIRST PRIZE a contribution of a monthly $25.00 Gift certificate from PAULS DISCOUNT STORE. This contest is intended to increase our Master Gardeners knowledge of garden plants suitable to be grown in our area and how to research plants. When you shop at PAULS be sure to thank Rob Cassidy and/or Randy Pennock for their commitment to Clinton County Master Gardeners. Your gift certificate can be picked up at the office by the check-out counter after the FIRST PRIZE winner is announced in the OVER THE GARDEN GATE. There was not one answer submitted for this month. Our Master Gardeners are missing an opportunity to earn education hours, increase their knowledge of plants suitable for our area and earn a gift certificate. Put your brain in gear. There is a lot of reference material available on the web, at the Extension Office, The Bickelhaupt Arboretum, or the local library. Hint for this months puzzle: This plant has a square stem typical of the mint family. Always do right -this will gratify some and astonish the rest.

Fanfare 'Fanfare' blanket flower Blanket flowers are wonderfully cheerful, long-blooming plants for hot, sunny gardens. They produce single or double daisy flowers through most of the summer and well into fall. The light brick red ray flowers are tipped with yellow -- the colors of Mexican blankets. Blanket flowers tolerate light frost and are seldom eaten by deer. Deadhead the flowers to keep them blooming consistently through the summer and into fall. Some species tend to be short-lived, especially if the soil is not well drained. You may also snail mail your answer to Ralph Stanford, 716 Terrace Drive, Clinton, IA The best answers will contain the FAMILY NAME, GENUS, SPECIES, COMMON NAME, CULTIVAR (if known) and UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS if any. See page 7 of the June Over The Garden Gate Please note I made an error asking for the GEN- DER. I should have asked for the GENUS. These monthly puzzles give master gardeners a chance to earn education hours researching the answers. Please try to provide as complete answers as possible. Many times you will not be able to provide the Cultivar, but that is OK, take a guess, if correct it may help you win a gift certificate. Look else ware in this issue for a hint. Winner will be based on whoever submits the most complete, correct answer. In case of ties the first answer received will be chosen. Time used researching the answer can be counted as education hours.
