2 Volume 2 Issue 6 Page 2 June 2011 A Note From Your Chairman At the May Advisory Board meeting we spent some time discussing those who became members of Master Gardeners and then for some reason dropped out. According to the by laws all one needs to do to be reinstated in the organization is to complete a year s requirement. For this year the requirement is twelve volunteer hours and six education hours. If you know of someone who was a member and dropped out, but might like to rejoin, encourage them to do so. In the next month or so all former members will be sent a letter encouraging them to rejoin. The Master Gardeners have a tent that can be used for any MG sanctioned events. Next year those who work at the plant sale in Lyons will not have to worry about sitting in the rain. We will be using the tent during the fair. June and July are two great months for members to get Master Gardener volunteer hours. The first is the Garden Walk. The walk is June 26. If you would like to help by taking or selling tickets for the event contact Kathy Sander. Final plans for Master Gardener activities at the Clinton County Fair are not yet finalized, but we will again have Master Gardener day at the fair. During the day there will be an opportunity for education hours. At the fair there is always a need for Master Gardeners to be at the OLC to greet folks as they walk through the OLC on their way to other fair activities. There will be more in the July news letter about volunteering for the fair. The Master Gardener scholarship was awarded to Evan Sinnott. Evan graduated from Central DeWitt this year. He will be attending Scott Community College for two years and then on to Iowa State University to pursue a Horticulture degree. The scholarship is for $500. The money for this scholarship is raised from the sale of tickets for the Garden Walk. The scholarship is for a graduating Clinton County high school senior who is going to study horticulture in college. Finally, I will note two Master Gardener activities during the Fair in July. One is the container contest. Last year was the first year for this and it was very successful. Think about entering a container in the contest this year. Also at the fair is a vegetable show sponsored by the Master Gardeners. Next month will have a listing of classes for this contest. The Garden Walk and the Clinton County fair are great PR events for the organization. I hope that a large number of members will take part in one or both of these events. Fun and Games June 28th Consider a tour of the Curtis Mansion Garden, a salad luncheon and an afternoon of cards, scrabble, canasta or any board game you'd like to play. The Curtis Mansion Victorian Garden was Nora Stanford's project several years ago and it is an exact duplicate of the garden that would have been on the house grounds more than 100 years ago! Norma and Charlie McDonnell and Ralph and Nora laid out the initial plans and Liz Clements and other Master Gardeners have kept it up to highlight the lumber baron's home. Lunch will be served at 12PM at 420 Fifth Ave. So. Make reservations with Liz Clements at $8 for lunch. See ya there. THANK YOU Thank you to Theisen's, Andresen's Landscaping and Happy Joes for donating their services to our recent Plant Sale in De Witt. Thank you to all the Master Gardeners for your help and plant donations, and especially we would like to thank those from the public who took the time to donate their personal plants to our recent Plant Sale. It is all very well appreciated by all of us here. Stan Bates

7 Volume 2 Issue 6 Page 7 June 2011 Classification of Plants Plants are classified in several different ways, and the further away from the garden we get, the more the name indicates a plant's relationship to other plants, and tells us about its place in the plant world rather than in the garden. Usually, only the Family, Genus and species are of concern to the gardener, but we sometimes include subspecies, variety or cultivar to identify a particular plant. Starting from the top, the highest category, plants have traditionally been classified as follows. Each group has the characteristics of the level above it, but has some distinguishing features. The further down the scale you go, the more minor the differences become, until you end up with a classification which applies to only one plant. CLASS Angiospermae (Angiosperms) Plants which produce flowers Gymnospermae (Gymnosperms) Plants which don't produce flowers SUBCLASS Dicotyledonae (Dicotyledons, Dicots) Plants with two seed leaves Monocotyledonae (Monocotyledons, Monocots) Plants with one seed leaf SUPERORDER A group of related Plant Families, classified in the order in which they are thought to have developed their differences from a common ancestor. There are six Superorders in the Dicotyledonae (Magnoliidae, Hamamelidae, Caryophyllidae, Dilleniidae, Rosidae, Asteridae), and four Superorders in the Monocotyledonae (Alismatidae, Commelinidae, Arecidae, Liliidae) ORDER FAMILY The names of the Superorders end in -idae Each Superorder is further divided into several Orders. The names of the Orders end in -ales Each Order is divided into Families. These are plants with many botanical features in common, and is the highest classification normally used. At this level, the similarity between plants is often easily recognisable by the layman. Modern botanical classification assigns a type plant to each Family, which has the particular characteristics which separate this group of plants from others, and names the Family after this plant. The number of Plant Families varies according to the botanist whose classification you follow. Some botanists recognise only 150 or so families, preferring to classify other similar plants as sub-families, while others recognise nearly 500 plant families. A widely-accepted system is that devised by Cronquist in 1968, which is only slightly revised today. Links to the various methods of classification are on this website. SUBFAMILY The names of the Families end in -aceae The Family may be further divided into a number of sub-families, which group together plants within the Family that have some significant botanical differences. The names of the Subfamilies end in -oideae Continued on next page

8 Volume 2 Issue 6 Page 8 June 2011 Continued from previous page Classification of Plants TRIBE A further division of plants within a Family, based on smaller botanical differences, but still usually comprising many different plants. The names of the Tribes end in -eae SUBTRIBE A further division, based on even smaller botanical differences, often only recognisable to botanists. The names of the Subtribes end in -inae GENUS This is the part of the plant name that is most familiar, the normal name that you give a plant - Papaver (Poppy), Aquilegia (Columbine), and so on. The plants in a Genus are often easily recognisable as belonging to the same group. The name of the Genus should be written with a capital letter. SPECIES This is the level that defines an individual plant. Often, the name will describe some aspect of the plant - the colour of the flowers, size or shape of the leaves, or it may be named after the place where it was found. Together, the Genus and species name refer to only one plant, and they are used to identify that particular plant. Sometimes, the species is further divided into sub-species that contain plants not quite so distinct that they are classified as Varieties. The name of the species should be written after the Genus name, in small letters, with no capital letter. VARIETY A Variety is a plant that is only slightly different from the species plant, but the differences are not so insignificant as the differences in a form. The Latin is varietas, which is usually abbreviated to var. The name follows the Genus and species name, with var. before the individual variety name. FORM A form is a plant within a species that has minor botanical differences, such as the colour of flower or shape of the leaves. The name follows the Genus and species name, with form (or f.) before the individual variety name. CULTIVAR A Cultivar is a cultivated variety, a particular plant that has arisen either naturally or through deliberate hybridisation, and can be reproduced (vegetatively or by seed) to produce more of the same plant. The name follows the Genus and species name. It is written in the language of the person who described it, and should not be translated. It is either written in single quotation marks or has cv. written in front of the name.... and justice for all The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits discrimination in all its programs and activities on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family status. 9 Volume 2 Issue 6 Page 9 June 2011 Monthly Migratory Bird Walks Sponsored by SUMRR Stewards of the Upper Mississippi River Refuge (SUMRR) have begun hosting their monthly migratory bird walks on the 2 nd Saturday of each month throughout the year. Birders meet at the parking lot of Sloane Marsh, across from the Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center each month unless notified of a different starting point. (Please check for any changes to meeting place each month). The Center is located at 7071 Riverview Rd. Thomson IL. (a couple miles south of Savanna off of highway 84). Birders of all ages and skill levels are welcome! Meet with experienced birders as they teach you to identify birds by sight and sound, which you might not normally see in your own backyard. Birders on previous bird walks have had excellent photo opportunities for such birds as Indigo Buntings, Cedar Waxwings, Orchard and Baltimore Orioles, Swamp Sparrows, Pied-billed Grebes, Sandhill Cranes, Great Egrets, Green Herons, and American White Pelican. The variety of migratory birds changes each month as the season s progress. Each month our birding destinations will change. Ayers Sand Prairie Natural Area and Thomson Prairie may be a chance to view species of birds that frequent prairie habitat. One of our common monthly destinations takes us to Spring Lake, with yet another opportunity for rare sightings of unusual birds. Here we have a combination of river, lake and forest habitats. Another choice is Plum River Bottoms. Here we will be able to drive down into forested river bottom habitat for a chance at viewing new species. (Please note: this area will be available to us for birding only on months of low water levels) Other possible monthly destinations include Lock and Dam 13, Thomson Causeway, Lost Mound Unit (Old Savanna Army Depot) and the Peregrine Falcon nest box in downtown Savanna. Bird walks usually last 2 to 3 hours depending on weather conditions. If you are new to birding please let us know so we can team you up with someone that can give you one on one attention. Binoculars and field guides are available to borrow for the morning if you let us know your needs before scheduled Saturday mornings. Walking is minimal, however if you are an experienced birder and would like to walk farther, please feel free to explore on your own. Continued on page 6 I would like to thank everyone who helped me make the Lyons Plant Sale a success. Thanks to all your hard work, and despite the bad weather, we still made $698 for the 2 days. All the interns were great and did such a good job. Couldn't have done it without all of you, thanks again, Brenda Council
