4 !!!!d!!!!! line of seeds from Lake Valley seed in conventional and organic varieties arriving mid-january at all three of our garden centers. Ready or not it's time to start planning and planting seeds for this year's edible and ornamental garden. Planting seeds is an extremely economical way to grow your own food and flowers. It allows you to pick exactly what varieties you and your family want without having to wait for the plants to come into the nurseries. This project is not difficult but it does require a time commitment. Baby plants, like babies, cannot wing it for any length of time; they need consistent light and water at all times in order to mature. That being said, seeds are pretty easy and fun. There is nothing better than seeing these little guys grow right before your eyes with very little work. Take time now to plan your garden or containers and purchase your seeds. If you need help in planning your garden, remember our experienced, knowledgeable Moana teammates are ready to coach you to success. Gail's Houseplant of the Month: Scheffleria Bonide All Seasons' Spray Oil The schefflera, commonly known as the umbrella plant, is familiar to most of us because of its wide use in offices and homes. This versatile plant comes in variegated and miniature leaf cultivars along with the traditional glossy evergreen leaves. It requires medium light so it can be used in many locations but direct heat and contact with vents should be avoided. This light and airy looking tropical plant can be used alone in various sizes and heights or put with a grouping of other plants to create a healthier environment at home or work. Bonide Liquid Copper Fungicide January High Desert Bird of the Month: Pine Sisken
5 Uni Gro Peat Moss Bonide MoleMax Pine Siskins are the most welcome surprise winter visitors to our yards. I say "surprise" because the winter movement of Pine Siskins is almost totally unpredictable. If pine cone crops in northern North America are skimpy, large populations of siskins will make an "irruptive" winter migration south and east, sometimes as far as Florida. When this occurs, many of us in the Truckee Meadows are likely to see Pine Siskins on our nyjer (thistle) feeders right alongside the goldfinches. How can you determine if siskins are visiting your yard? Pine Siskins are a very small songbird, the same size as American Goldfinch, with brown, very streaky bodies, a small sharppointed bill, and short notched tail. The bill is more slender than that of most species of finch. They have yellow edging on wings and tail that may not be as conspicuous on some individuals. They will congregate mostly at nyjer feeders, but also like hulled sunflower and may occasionally eat suet. Siskins are usually in flocks, and they can be aggressive around food sources. They may also forage close to heavier-beaked birds, picking up the fragments of larger seeds that they can't crack themselves. Another sure-fire way to tell if you have Pine Siskins in your yard is their call - a buzzy, rising zreeeeee.
