1 Board Briefs. A Newsletter from The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. Board of Directors.. Volume XIII Edition III Autumn 2014 Linda Ragland, Editor. Hello Friends, It is hard to believe that September is here. I, for one, am glad that we are soon going to leave the hot summer behind! September is the month that our clubs start back after a summer break, and many of you will begin thinking about awards. For those of you who have not heard, Helen Huddleston resigned as Awards Chairman. The Awards Committee will take care of the awards for the remainder of this term. I will be the Awards contact person. Please a copy of the awards to the appropriate chairman and to me. As a reminder - #16 Yearbooks due October 15; #23 Flower Show Schedule due October 15; most other awards due December 1. This year there is one big change. Do not bother with filling out an NGC application. NGC no longer requires that the applications to them are on the official NGC application form. I can send a GCG form with certain changes. This will make it easier for you! You do need to look at the NGC Award requirements. If you win State but don't have the things NGC requires in the individual award descriptions, I will not be sending your application on to NGC. Call or me if you have questions. As we approach October, the seven Districts will be gearing up for their annual meetings. I am looking forward to being with you and having the opportunity to greet old friends and meet new ones. The programs promise to be very interesting. You will be electing the officers for your District for the term at your District Meeting, so you need to be there. Please place your calendar orders so that you can pick them up at your District Meeting. Remember, our Scholarship program benefits from every calendar that it sold. Speaking of Scholarships - our deadline for NGC Scholarships is earlier than usual so if you are planning to donate a Named Scholarship, become a Patron of Scholarship, make a Scholarship donation, or purchase a calendar, you need to do it well in advance of our Scholarship Meeting in February. November brings several fun activities. Environmental Studies School, Course III, will be held in Tifton, November 3-4. Gardening Study School, Course II, will be held in Augusta on November That will be followed immediately by "Babes in the Woods" adult camp at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield on November 5-6. For those of you who think we mean that you'll be staying in a tent, put your worries aside. The rooms there are like hotel rooms. The food in the dining room is yummy. Molly Kimler and Linda Cobb have planned two days filled with fun and surprises. I can't wait to have the opportunity to look at the stars and planets through the "big" telescopes with assistance from the members of the Charlie Elliott Astronomy Club, a chapter of The Atlanta Astronomy Club. Space is limited so get your registrations in now. Spouses are welcome! 1

2 Then on November 7, we will be dedicating a Blue Star Marker at the Pete Wheeler Georgia War Veterans Memorial Plaza across the street from the Capitol in Atlanta. This was a dream of mine, and Jan Thiese has worked tirelessly to make it a reality. Please come and support our veterans and active duty servicemen as well as GCG. Join us in Marietta for Landscape Design School, Course I on December 1-2 and Course II on January 5-6. What a great way to end 2014 and start My sincere gratitude to all of you for your support of the projects and programs of The Garden Club of Georgia. Happy Veterans Day, Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year. As we enter this busy season, please remember to be safe and to Scatter Joy as We Bloom and Grow". Suzanne 2..

The Dedication is scheduled for Friday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m. in the East Tower lobby of the Floyd Veterans Memorial Building. The BSM will be placed at the entrance to the Veterans Memorial Garden which is across the street from the State Capital Building and in front of the Floyd Veterans Memorial Building. The dedication is in the planning stages. An invitation with directions and parking instructions will be sent out at a later date. Please save the date and plan to attend. Another BSM will be dedicated Tuesday, November 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the "Walk of Honor" at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus-Ft. Benning. The museum is right outside of Ft. 26 Scholarships GCG s Commitment to the Future GCG Scholarship Program Wins National Award SCHOLARSHIP CYCLE BEGINS AGAIN Dot Williams, Scholarship Chairman Thanks to your generosity, last March $52, in scholarships were awarded to l7 Georgia students majoring in garden-related subjects. Two of these students went on to win additional $4, National Garden Clubs, Inc. Scholarships. A $ check from NGC was presented to GCG for winning the National Garden Club, Inc. Award of Excellence for GCG s outstanding scholarship program. The cycle begins again. The Scholarship Committee will meet March, 2015 to award scholarships to deserving Georgia students who, through no fault of their own, cannot pay the tuition to continue their education. Each of you can do your part in supporting scholarships by purchasing a National award winning calendar, a Bag a Scholarship tote bag, establish or renew a Named Scholarship, donate to the Patron of Scholarship program, become a Life Member or make any donations, large or small, to the General Scholarship Fund. The Bag a Scholarship project is new. These attractive smaller bags with the GCG logo are perfect for handbooks, calendars, yearbooks, books and speaker gifts, as well as numerous other uses and are available for merely $7.50 each. They are available from Mary Denney, Calendar Marketing Chairman, your District Director, and at your Annual District meetings. ALL PROFITS GO TO SCHOLARSHIPS. When all 500 bags are sold, we can award two more scholarships. Fewer calendars are being printed this year making it necessary to supplement the loss of income from the calendar sales to help us reach our goals. What do scholarships mean? Betty Grimes said it best when she was asked to serve on the Scholarship Committee: A scholarship is the opportunity for GCG to change the direction of a young life. It does not stop there but also gives these eager young people the opportunity to change many lives and protect the future of our planet. The following are responses from two of this year s scholarship recipients: Let my appreciation be extended to the donor of my scholarship. Without your help, my last year in college as a Landscape Architecture major would have been impossible. Because of my scholarship, I will be able to focus on my double major of Horticulture and Entomology. I hope that I will one day be able to pay it forward to another student the same way you helped me. WE CANNOT REACH OUR GOALS WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT! Please include scholarships in your personal, as well as your club, council or district s budget and remember the old Indian Proverb: All the flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today. Together we can give these seeds a chance to bloom. Named Scholarships of $1, are sent to Dot Williams, Scholarship Chairman, 6521 Rivoli Drive, Macon, GA (dwilliams@imediagroup.biz) All other contributions are sent to Clare Jenkins, GCG Assistant Treasurer, 495 Hunters Ridge, Coleman, GA (clareajenkins@yahoo.com)

27 SAVE THE DATE Atlanta History Center, 130 West Paces Ferry Road NW, Atlanta, GA "Make it gorgeous and they will come. Keep it that way and they will help." - Lynden Miller Please save the date of Wednesday, October 15, 2014, when the Cherokee Garden Library will host Central Park Conservatory Garden Director and Author, Lynden B. Miller, who will discuss her award-winning book, Parks, Plants, and People: Beautifying the Urban Landscape. Miller s debut appearance in Atlanta will be based on her 2009 book, winner of the 2010 American Horticultural Society Book Award. It chronicles over 25 years of experience and gives practical guidance on designing and maintaining public gardens as well as how to raise public and private funds to support them. Her message resonates with park lovers, city planners, architects, landscape architects, civic leaders, and elected officials. She makes the case that good parks make good cities and argues that beautiful parks and gardens transform lives, encourage economic development, reduce crime, and change the ways people feel about their city. It s about quality of life, she says. In bad economic times it s even more important that you keep your parks in good shape because people need them so much. Admission pricing for this lecture begins at $25. All lecture ticket purchases are nonrefundable. Make check payable to "Cherokee Garden Library" 27.

30 The Garden Club of Georgia Wild & Wonderful Experience We are home from camp! The 7th Annual Wild & Wonderful Experience camp at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center in Mansfield has ended with so many new memories for the campers and counselors alike. We had 20 very energetic campers. The campers hiked and learned about Native American lore, fished, visited with endangered species, made a container garden, learned about basic design, painted bird houses, had a lesson in astronomy and many more activities. These activities gave the campers a wonderful new look at the world around us. We are thankful to The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. for your continuous support of the Wild & Wonderful Experience and to all the clubs and individuals that supported this project to make it possible for every child to attend camp. I hope you and your clubs will continue to share this mission with children in your lives. As they prepare to enter 5th or 6th Grades, they too can join us at the 8th annual GCG Wild & Wonderful Experience Camp! Our next date is July 12-14, 2015; mark your calendar and we ll see you at camp! Molly Kimler Susan Turner W&WE Chairmen W&WE Co-Chairmen mkimler@uga.edu glencree@bellsouth.net 30.

31 DISTRICTS DIG YOUTH! Our forty-nine GCG sponsored Youth Garden Clubs are thriving due to your efforts and enthusiasm extended to our young people in all areas of gardening. We love seeing the work being done and the smiling faces as these young gardeners reap their rewards! The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. has a Photo and Video Release for Minors Form available as permission from parents and guardians. This form is vital for us to make use of and have on file for the protection of all parties concerned. Children love to have their photo made and are even more excited to see themselves in print. Whether in a hometown newspaper, your district newsletter or on our GCG website, let us be sure we have this document in hand. Parents are very gracious to allow us use their child s image for the promotion of our youth programs and projects. We need to be respectful that they agree should we choose to show a group or individual photo of their child. The form is simple and self-explanatory. If anyone has any questions or concerns, you may direct them to me. Contest winners, youth clubs, and GCG sponsored events with minors all need to have a Photo Release form signed to allow us to use a child s image in any type of publicity or publication. The form, (copied below), is available on our website via or U.S. Mail from this chairman. Let s continue to: SCATTER JOY as DISTRICTS DIG YOUTH! For additional information contact Susan Turner GCG 2 nd VP / Youth Coordinator Youth Clubs Chairman glencree@bellsouth.net 31.

32 In Ireland, while attending the World Flower Show, I had dinner with a lady who told me the following story that I would like to share with you: I was new in garden club and really didn t know what to do. A member encouraged me to attend a National Convention that was close to home at the time. I made a new friend at the meal like we do so often. She gave me attention and took the time to explain many details about garden clubbing. As we began to leave, she handed me her Business Card. When she left the table, I looked at the card and she was a state president. It made a lasting impression that she took the time for me and has been an encouragement to me over the years. Use the following example of a Business Card- cut out, print out and give out. Have them handy in your purse! It identifies you as a helpful hand to someone. There are also companies on-line that will print 250 cards for just the postage costs. Virginia Pennington 4th Vice President, Membership Vpennington@mchsi.com The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. 33 IT's ROUND-UP TIME in GEORGIA We have talked about using alternative bags; we have pledged to use plastic bags only when we must; we have agreed to think before we bag it; we are re-using our bags; we are turning plastic bags into craft projects. Now it is time to get to the dirty work. It is time for us to join together to corral the clutter, BAG-It, and re-cycle it. It's Round- Up time in Georgia. Some people are careless with plastic bags. We all witness this in our communities, our schools, parks, gardens, and along our roads. Some people seem to find trashcans invisible or too difficult to use. Not Garden Club members of course. Maybe we should put out WANTED posters to catch the litterers. The mess is unsightly and detracts from the beauty of our land. Our rivers, lakes, streams, ponds and even our oceans suffer from discarded bags and junk. Our water creatures, wildlife and birds can be caught and injured because of our carelessness in discarding plastic bags and other dangerous and unsightly clutter. The time is here to fight back, to clean up our lands and our waters and to reclaim the natural beauty of our state. President Suzanne Wheeler's special project BAN-the- BAG is intended to not only call our attention to the unsightly clutter caused by plastic bags but to create awareness of the danger to wildlife, birds and aquatic life. The Ban-the-Bag project is intended to cause us to take action. Suzanne needs us all to work to clean up the messes we have made. She needs Garden Clubs, Garden Club Districts, and Garden Club members joining together to make our communities and our state a cleaner less cluttered place to live. For a successful Round-Up, we need some special leaders. Some District Directors and some Garden Club Presidents have appointed Ban-the-Bag chairman and/or recycling chairman. We have received pictures and reports supporting their efforts. If your District or your Garden Club has not appointed these chairmen, we encourage you to do so now. Please send to us the names and contact information. We want to include your efforts in our reports and displays. It's Round-UP time in Georgia. Let's get on our horses, swing our lassos far, corral the clutter and clean up Georgia. Evelyna Keadle Rogers & Barbara Keadle Johnson Ban-the-Bag Chairmen 33.

38 WILDFLOWERS DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHIC CONTEST Through the GCG photographic contest, we hope to create an appreciation of our wonderful Wildflower Heritage. We wish to encourage photographers to go outdoors and view/photograph their beauty and share that with others. ENJOY & SHARE THE WILDFLOWERS! RULES FOR WILDFLOWER DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES MARCH 10, 2015 Wildflower Chairmen: Evelyna Keadle Rogers & Barbara Johnson Autumn is on its way and bringing an array of wildflowers for us to enjoy. It is the perfect opportunity to capture wildflowers on camera to share through the GCG Wildflower Digital Photography Contest. The contest is off to a great start, and if you have not visited the Wildflower web postings at Projects and Programs and scroll to the bottom of Roadside Beautification. This is also the site to get the contest rules and entry forms. Now while the days continue to scorch is a good time to remain indoors and enjoy what is posted. The photographs represent wildflowers across Georgia. A big THANK-YOU to each of the photographers who endured the summer heat to photograph the wildflowers for us all to enjoy. We are so excited about the photographs we have received and posted. We want everyone to look, and to enjoy. The photographs multiply our state's wildflower bounty. Nature paints the world in bold bright colors, and in shimmering muted tones, and we have autumn. After the long hot summer what could be more welcome than the cool crisp colorful days? Autumn brings hunting, fishing, football, softball, and long lists of gardening activities. Autumn also ushers in a variety of colorful wildflowers. As the days grow shorter, but cooler, it is fun to go searching for wildflowers. Barbara and I will take the Mule out to search fields and woods. We will explore rural roads spotting wildflowers all the way. My husband is accustomed to stopping for bright red leaves, or wildflowers peeking from the woods as we travel. We hope you are planning wildflower excursions. And, do not forget to take along your camera. In autumn you will be able to photograph the wildflowers without fearing you or your camera might melt. The WILDFLOWER DIGITAL CONTEST is a way to showcase our wildflowers, to teach each other to appreciate and identify a variety of wildflowers, to enhance our enthusiasm for wildflowers and to scatter joy as we and the wildflowers grow and bloom. Evelyna, Barbara & Barbara DEADLINE for entry, March 15, 2015 For more information, contact Evelyna Rogers at rogers2767@bellsouth.net Or Web Master, Barbara Bourque at b.bourque@comcast.net

Judy Kirkland, Bee GAP chairman for GCG, jukirkland@knology.net BeeGAAP news BeeGap Gardeners Adding Pollinators Honey bees are in trouble with colony collapse, but National Garden Club, Inc. has partnered with Crown Bees to supplement pollination with native bees: mason bees and leaf cutter bees. As fall and winter approach (yes, I know it is still hot) it is time to think about what these pollinators need to be ready for next spring and summer. They will overwinter in cocoons inside hollow stems or crevices, if these are available for them. Leave a few hollow stems for the pollinators if you haven t put out pollinator houses. You can also build your own pollinator house for the bees. Joe Lamp l (the author of my favorite gardening book Over the Fence With Joe Gardener) interviewed Dave Hunter (the founder of Crown Bees) on Growing a Greener World ( ) and showed how to build a bee house with scratch paper rolled around a pencil and put into an easilyconstructed box. The interview shows some of the Crown Bee products such as bee houses hanging around Hunter s yard and explains the importance of these bees and the ease of

43 assisting in their good health. It only takes 30 minutes to watch the full interview, but you can fast forward if you are really pushed for time. Want to buy a house instead of build your own? Visit the Crown Bees website and see the variety they offer. There you can get hollow reeds, paper liners, houses, even bees in cocoons to put out next spring or summer all with instructions on what to do when. You can sign up for be to get reminders/directions. Crown Bees also offers fundraising for your club, council, state. They are redesigning the website, so if you have problems finding information there, contact Debbie Skow, d.sk.1159@gmail.com NGC s Crown Bee liaison. She will have everything you need and can get it to you. Want to help publicize this project? NGC needs speakers who are willing to share this information to garden clubs, civic clubs, etc. A PowerPoint is ready to download along with handouts for the audience and tips on speaking to groups. Here is a ready-made program of high quality just waiting for you to find it. Contact me for more information. Judy Kirkland Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. BeeGAP chairman jukirkland@knology.net
