We provide the ingredients (gravel, rocks, soil, plants, moss and lichen) to put in your terrarium; you provide the container. Terrarium glassware is for sale in the Garden Shop. Participants are also welcome to bring their own glass container. Members $30, Nonmembers $35 Garden-Inspired Mosaics with Maggie Harlow-Vogt, Des Moines Art Center Thursday, May 17, 6-7:30 p.m. Create a glass mosaic tile that you can use as a coaster or trivet. Find inspiration in the gardens for a mosaic tile design then select and cut glass to complete your tile. Members $30, Nonmembers $35 CYANOTYPES, PHOTOGRAMS AND NON-CAMERA PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES Cyanotypes, Photograms and Non-Camera Photography Techniques with Peter Shellenberger, Artist Saturday, May 19 or May 26, 10 a.m.-noon Learn, experiment and practice non-camera photography techniques with botanical garden subject matter during one or both of these sessions. Use the same technique as Anna Atkins, the creator of the first book of photographs, to make beautiful images from live plants and sun exposure. These workshops provide a space to slow down and practice the art of looking as well as the opportunity to capture nature through unique artistic processes. Participants who attend both sessions have the opportunity to explore more advanced processes and have extended time for guided practice. Advanced Terrariums with Derek Carwood, Botanical Garden curatorial horticulturist Saturday, June 2, 10:30 a.m.-noon In this premium hands-on workshop, create and care for your own closed ecosystem complete with exotic orchids and carnivorous plants. Members $80, Nonmembers $90 Mimosas and Art: Whimsical Planters at the Des Moines Art Center Sunday, June 3, 12:30-3:30 p.m. Create a fun and simple planter from clay in the Art Center s studios, then learn how to properly plant a succulent in your planter with the guidance of the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Etch a design into a glass container and learn how to transform your creation into a terrarium with the help of Botanical Garden staff. Please note this class will take place at the Des Moines Art Center in Principal Studio 5. All participants must be at least 21 years of age. Tuition per couple: Member $60, Nonmember $48; Material fee $25 Food & Drink Coffee Exploration and Tasting with Horizon Line Coffee Shop and Derek Carwood, Botanical Garden curatorial horticulturist Saturday, April 14, 10-11:30 a.m. Don t miss this one-of-a-kind lecture and chance to taste coffee grown right in the Botanical Garden conservatory! Learn how and where coffee grows. Explore the processing and roasting of beans, then experience the flavor variations that result. Sample natural, honey and washed processed coffees from singleorigin sources, and also taste the Botanical Garden s own coffee. Each participant will receive a handmade, limited-edition coffee mug by local artist Mason Kessinger to commemorate their Des Moines single-origin coffee tasting experience. Members $40, Nonmembers $50 Wellness Green Spring Cleaning Workshop with Jocelyn Engman, Pickle Creek Herbal Thursday, April 5, 6-7:30 p.m. This MIY (Make-It-Yourself) workshop focuses on using herbs and essential oils to create all-natural cleaning products for a fresh and spotless home. Learn the chemistry of getting clean, the basic ingredients used in all-natural cleaning products and the essential plant oils that can be used as natural cleaners and disinfectants. Mix up your own all-purpose surface cleaner, bathroom scrub and glass spray. Plus, get tips for creating naturally clean and garden-fresh air in your home. Members $35, Nonmembers $45 Yoga at the Garden in partnership with dmyoga Unwind, renew and reconnect your spirit to nature in the beauty and serenity of the Botanical Garden on the last Wednesday of every month. This all-levels yoga series is designed to help you explore your practice with a variety of experienced and personable instructors from across the Midwest. Arrive at 5:30 p.m. to spend a half-hour enjoying the gardens, and then participate in an hour-long yoga practice at 6 p.m. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel. Walk-in spots may not always be available for each class. Guarantee your spot by registering in advance. 5 YOUTH YOUTH Story Time Story Sprouts Fridays 10:30-11 a.m. June 1-Aug. 31 Join us for this fun, interactive story time tailored toward children ages 2 to 5 that explores nature and plants. During each program, participants will enjoy stories and an activity based on the week s theme. For a detailed schedule, visit dmbotanicalgarden.com. Registration not required. Members Free; Nonmembers $3/youth; Adults and Seniors pay general admission Summer Camp Enroll children ages 6-10 in this day camp that allows children to explore the natural world through the lens of their favorite activities. Using the gardens as unique classrooms, children are inspired to create and explore with hands-on activities. Guest speakers from a wide range of expertise will also participate. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Dates and Themes: June 18-22: Outdoor Explorers The camp for the curious nature lover, Outdoor Explorers offers up-close-and-personal experiences with plants and animals alike. Hosted at the Brenton Arboretum, campers will explore 143 acres of prairies, streams and ponds while they learn more about and enjoy the great outdoors. (Note: The Brenton Arboretum is located approximately 25 minutes from Des Moines near Dallas Center.) June 25-29: Theater Sprouts NEW! Using the gardens as inspiration, children attending this camp will rehearse throughout the week and present a one-of-a-kind production at the conclusion of camp. Creative writing, poetree slams, puppetry, song, dance, set decorations and costume design will all be part of this weeklong exploration in performance. July 9-13: Junior Botanists Science takes a step outside during this week of camp, where children will be able to take a closer look at what makes plants so unique, including performing a seed dissection. From planting to science experiments to exploring ecosystems, this week will open up a whole new side of the garden. July 16-20: Budding Chefs What better way to appreciate the bounty of a garden than by cooking with fresh produce? Children will not only have the chance to taste dishes they prepare, but also learn how to correctly measure ingredients and follow a recipe. Little chefs will learn to connect the ingredients they use to where they come from during this exciting week of camp that celebrates the tastier side of plants! SUMMER CAMP July 23-27: Garden Artists The Botanical Garden s plant collection and unique garden spaces serve as the perfect inspiration for young artists. Children will learn many fun ways to make art from nature including sun prints, painting, sculpture and flower arranging. July 30-Aug. 3: Green Thumbs From seed to sprout to sapling, children will learn to start, grow and care for plants properly. Children will dig, plant, water, and weed in the garden while exploring the wide world of plants. Aug. 6-10: Magic in the Garden NEW! Children will explore the magic of the garden using basic chemistry skills. Experiments with solids, liquids and gases to create potions and elixirs will make them feel like a real wizard. If you forget your magic wand, don t worry: we will make one during this exciting new camp. Aug : Young Naturalists Aspiring naturalists will learn more about the diverse ecosystems and biomes that cover the globe. Children will be inspired to investigate, create and experiment when exploring native plants and animals of different biomes. The desert and tropical rainforest biomes located in our conservatory will spur creativity from food web crafts to habitat games. Price (per child, per week): Members $210, Nonmembers $250 Price includes camp T-shirt, daily snack, supplies for all activities, and multiple projects to take home and enjoy. Choose from three seasonally offered hands-on workshops that guide participants through creating a unique piece to take home and enjoy. 7 SPECIAL EVENTS SPECIAL EVENTS Downtown Earth Day Tour Saturday, April 21, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Celebrate the sixth annual Downtown Earth Day Tour with the Botanical Garden, Iowa Rivers Revival and the Science Center of Iowa. Enjoy a short walk or bike ride between these three locations. Drop-in activities from various organizations will be offered at each location along with a selfie contest! Free admission is sponsored by The Principal Financial Group. The Mid-Century Modern Landscape Lecture and book signing by author Ethne Clarke Sunday, April 29, 2 p.m. Ethne Clarke, internationally known lecturer and author, will give a richly illustrated talk about mid-twentieth century garden design, the subject of her new book. The Mid-Century Modern Garden is a fresh guide to the period and filled with inspiration for today s home garden. Clarke will explore the origins of midcentury modern garden design, revealing how architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Cliff May, creator of the now ubiquitous ranch house, worked with landscape architects to blur the divisions between indoors and out. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. This event is presented by the Iowa Architectural Foundation and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. Members and Nonmembers: $15; tickets at eventbrite.com Spring Garden Festival 2018 Thursday-Sunday, May The Spring Garden Festival is the Botanical Garden s signature opportunity to celebrate gardening in Iowa. This four-day pop-up retail festival includes more than 500 limited edition varieties of plants, garden art and merchandise, plus educational sessions and family-friendly garden activities. The festival is held in the outdoor gardens as well as in the North Gallery. Seasonal cost of admission applies. Adult Workshops Sustainable Design Using Pollinator Friendly Plug-and- Plant Kits with Kelly Norris, Botanical Garden Director of Horticulture Friday May 11, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Understand elements of sustainable garden design through the lens of horticulture and ecology. Learn how to implement practical design techniques and how to achieve success with a pollinator friendly plug-and-plant kit.
