Most people have several measurements in their plants which are on their wish list but the prohibitive conduit, wiring and installation cost prevents them from installing these measurements. In September 2007, HART foundation released Wireless HART standard based upon the IEEE wireless radios. With the passage of the standard, many equipment manufacturers and end users have started implementing their respective wireless strategies. In this presentation, we would review the Wireless HART standard. We will focus on the capabilities specified in the Wireless portion of the HART 7.0 standard, both currently being deployed and the future plans. The Self organizing/self Healing network along with Wireless security standards will be the reviewed. We will also look at how Wireless Hart is being used in a wide variety of measurements to solve real life problems today. How are those new year resolutions going? The board has done their work in advance and planned an interesting 2010, please look at the left hand side of the cover page to see what we have in store for you. We try our best to select topics that lend to your best interest and education. Feedback is always welcome; if you have a topic of interest or have a willing speaker, drop us a line and we will try to accommodate your needs. Remember to stop by February 10, for a discussion on the pros and cons of wireless, and on March 10, for control systems trends. Two topics designed around keeping you in the know about emerging technology. Once again, as a reminder, we will are adding a new addition to the beginning of each presentation. As a result of the economy, we will be offering a brief one-minute slot to any individual, seeking a job, to speak to the group and express their qualifications and type of job they are seeking. Employers looking for employees will also be given a one-minute slot to advertise their available positions. We hope this adds to the value of the meetings and encourage all to take advantage of the opportunity. This facility is one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the world, and the tour is expected to be sold out early. Located in Carson, the JWPCP provides both primary and secondary treatment for approximately 300 million gallons of wastewater per day. The treated water is directly sent to the Pacific Ocean through a network of tunnels and outfall pipes. The tour will include an overview of plant processes including primary and secondary treatment units, solids processing, energy production, and enhanced odor control systems. The bus will depart from the Carson Center at 8:15am and return at 10:30am. No special clothing is required, cameras are welcome and a box lunch and drink is included. For safety and security reasons, only those who board the bus at the Carson Center will be permitted on the tour. Advance reservations are required. It can very accurately measure volume, compensated volume and mass of liquids and gases. Or volume and mass of steam, saturated or superheated, in a very large ranges of pressures and temperatures. GFC300 calculates density and compressibility factors with a very high accuracy. Each channel has one flow input that accepts pulses with 24VDC / 20 ma power for the pulse sensor and 4-20 ma loop power flow signal. 30 points linearization for each pulse input can significantly improve the flow meters performances. Flow meter calibration tables can be entered there. Each channel has one 4-20 ma loop power input for temperature or density and one for pressure with a typical error of 0.01% full scale for each. The isolated analog output of each channel can be ordered as 4-20 ma loop power, 0-5V or 0-10V. It can be programmed to represent rate, rate A+B, pressure or temperature. The isolated pulse output of each channel is sinking open drain 100V / 100 ma and can represent total, total A B or total A+B, producing pulses of frequencies up to 10kHz. Each channel has also one relay for 250VAC / 5 A with programmable hysteresis for rate, rate A+B, pressure or temperature Both flow rates are seven digit, totals are eight digit. There are separate units for flow rate and total for each channel. Many volume and mass units are listed in special menus. Flow rate and total for each channel have independent programmable decimal places. GFC300 has many preset liquids, gases and temperature transmitters which simplifies its programming. Power can be ordered as VAC, or 12VDC or 24 VDC, all with high isolation, surge, reverse polarity, under-voltage, over-current and short circuit protection. GFC300 has a bright transmissive color graphic display with a white back-light and easy to use scroll drop list menus. Fully compliant, programmable RS485, 1/8 load, MODBUS RTU for baud rates up to makes GFC300 highly network-able. Multilevel menus, the first of which can be locked make programming easy, simple and protected. Size is DIN 72 x144 mm panel mount, weight is 0.45 kg (1.0 lb). 10 ISA Southern San Joaquin Valley Section Unbreaking SCADA the topic at the Petroleum Club Sky Bar The ISA Southern San Joaquin Valley Section held their first meeting at the Petroleum club on November 19th. The Club is the new regular location for Section lunch meetings. The presenter was Chris Dickey, SCADA/IT Coordinator for Chevron in Bakersfield who spoke about Un- Breaking SCADA Security. Thanks to Mike Bush of Valin for the photos. His presentation brought out how traditional approaches to automation security are broken and fundamentally flawed. It was discussed how we have reached the point where many key components have little chance of providing any real protection in the future. It is time to rethink the issue from the core problem and address the real concerns at the most basic level. Traditional approaches are complex, backwardlooking tangles that don t address the fundamental question: Is the system available for use as intended and operating as expected when it is needed. To address this, we must stop attempting to prevent the infinite number of bad things that can happen, and instead allow only that which is known to be good. Pictured above from left are Alan McMurry, Chris Horton, Paul Crossman, Chip Wickline, Scott Bender, Del Signorelli, Fernando Ceja; and from TJ Cross Ray Burk, David Llewellyn, Dan Bloom and Conrad Diaz. Standards & Practices IEC subcommittee by Paul Bodeau, Why Not Engineering The IEC subcommittee had two meetings since the last Newsletter. Minutes of these meetings should be on the ISALA.org website. The first meeting discussed safety principles and how IEC enforces these safety principles. The second meeting discussed goals the IEC subcommittee needs to achieve to comply with IEC The Microsoft Powerpoint safety presentation that was presented in our first meeting is on the ISALA website. To get there go to isala.org. From the isala.org main menu select Standards. That will take you to the Standards and Practices Home page. Select IEC Project Home Page and you will get to the information about our safety-related project activities. As time passes the progress of the IEC subcommittee will be published on this page. We need a preliminary Configuration Management Plan and a preliminary Quality Assurance Plan just to get started.
