2 AFCA 2018 Conference and Trade Show Registration Information The Alberta Fire Chiefs Association will be hosting the 71st Annual Conference, Trade Show and Annual General Meeting at the in Edmonton, Alberta from Sunday, May 27 to Wednesday, May 30, The AFCA theme for 2018 is Plan for Today and Prepare for Tomorrow. SILENT AUCTION The AFCA 2018 Conference Silent Auction benefactor will be the Edmonton Fire Fighters Burn Treatment Society. The Fire Fighters Burn Treatment Society is managed and operated by Edmonton firefighters who volunteer their time. Monies raised are presented to the Firefighters Burn Unit, University of Alberta Hospital. The FFBTS designates that the funds be used to purchase new specialized equipment for the burn unit ensuring enhanced patient care and for the continuing education of burn treatment staff to remain current in new treatment techniques and for funds to be designated to the burn camp held annually. 3 AFCA ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT - SATURDAY, MAY 26 We are excited that this year s Golf Tournament will be held at Jagare Ridge Golf Club which is located at th Avenue S.W., Edmonton. The fee is $ per golfer plus GST. This includes green fees, power cart and buffet dinner. Please reference the golf registration details at and complete your registration. Course registration will commence at 11:00 a.m. with a shot gun start at 1:00 p.m. You will be assigned to a golf cart, receive an information package that will include the day s program, tournament rules and regulations and your score card. Please remember that appropriate dress is required both on the course and in the clubhouse and that no metal spikes are allowed. The Tournament will be played in a Best Ball format and there will be a variety of contests and prizes to be won. NFPA s Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) Safety Training Program provides tools and information that firefighters as well as other emergency responders need to safely handle emergency situations involving AFVs. This course provides response training to first responders for incidents involving alternative fuel vehicles including electric, hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell, bio-diesel and gaseous fuels such as CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), LPG (Liquid Propane Gas), and their recharging/refueling stations. This will be a Train the Trainer program allowing students to take course material back to their departments. There will be several hybrid vehicles on hand for practical review and demonstration. On Saturday, May 26, 2018, Retired Battalion Chief Sean DeCrane who is a member of the Underwriters Laboratories Fire Council and UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute will discuss the findings of the recent Water Mapping Experiments. - Edmonton, Alberta 3

Public Safety Division/Office of the Alberta Fire Commissioner s Office Training and certification Updates which will be presented by Sean Wells and Sonya Irving. The second session will be a Round Table Discussion on Fire Service Training in Alberta. Join us in the evening for a BBQ with the Alberta Fire Chiefs and Alberta Fire Service Instructors. During Get Fired Up! you will get an inside look at Paul s creative process and see what makes one of his zany cartoons come to life. Paul will also show a selection of work that has made a difference in his career and share the cartoons that have evoked the strongest reactions the good, the bad... and the hilarious! However, there s more to this presentation than a showcase of cartoons. 5 PRE-CONFERENCE SESSION FROM 11:30 13:30 -- RIGHT SEAT LEADERSHIP WITH DAVE CASEY AND CHRIS NIEBLING - This is a scenario driven interactive class that involves participants in the decision-making processes needed by officers to handle interpersonal events. It skips the theories and goes to utilization through recorded scenarios portraying real-world situations in the firehouse, in the public, and on the fireground. The fee for each of the pre-conference sessions is $60.00 plus GST. Space is limited and Delegates can purchase the pre-conference sessions by visiting to complete your registration. This pre-conference session will run concurrently with the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal Investiture. THE FIRE SERVICES EXEMPLARY SERVICE MEDAL PRESENTATION - SUNDAY, MAY 27 The AFCA and the Office of the Fire Commissioner will be hosting the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal Presentation in Ballroom 104 to 106 at the from 12:00 to 14:00. The Medal is administered by the Chancellery of Canadian Orders and Decorations in Ottawa. The federal, provincial, and territorial jurisdictions independently recommend eligible and deserving members of the Fire Services to the Chancellery. Delegates are welcome to join the medal recipients in the Ballroom. PARTNERS PROGRAM Monday, May 28, 2018 In the morning we will Escape to the Pyramids at the Muttart Conservatory. The fee is $ per person plus GST. We will be joined by a guide for an hour-long guided tour of the gems of their collection. We ll explore the lush plant life of the tropical pyramid, discover unique plant adaptations in the arid pyramid and enjoy the changing of the seasons in the temperate pyramid. 20 Speakers DAVE CASEY With 35 years in the fire service, he is the State Fire Training Director for Louisiana and previously served in a similar position for the State of Florida. Prior to that, he was the Chief of Clay County (FL) Fire Rescue for 11 years and during 15 years with the career Sunrise Fire Rescue Dept. he rose through the ranks to Division Chief and served 14 years with the volunteer Plantation Fire Dept., the last six as Assistant Chief. He is a frequent presenter at the FDIC and state Chief s and Training Conferences. He has a Master s degree in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Publications: Lead author of the NFPA/IAFC text Live Fire Training: Principles and Practice, articles published in Fire Engineering and other fire service journals. PAUL COMBS Paul Combs is a classically trained artist, cartoonist, and firefighter/emt. His lavishly detailed illustrations are published worldwide in newspapers, magazines, and books. He is the editorial cartoonist for Fire Engineering Magazine, FireRescue Magazine, and JEMS. Paul is the author of three books: Drawn By Fire, Drawn By Fire Too, and Drawing Lines. Paul is an FDIC presenter and Hands-On-Training instructor, and an adjunct instructor for The Ohio Fire Academy. BO MOORE Deputy Chief of Operations/ Training/ Firefighter Safety, City of Leduc Fire Department Bo Moore has been in the fire service for over 17 years. He is the Deputy Chief of Operations / Training / Firefighter Safety for the City of Leduc. Bo holds a Fire Officer IV Certificate from JIBC, and a Fire Instructor III certificate from the Colorado State Fire Marshall, along with many other NFPA certificates. A Fire Officer, Fire Instructor, Paramedic, and past IAFF union local President, he has spoken at FDIC and state conferences. Chris is the past Chairperson of the Florida Training Improvement Conference, and Vice President of the Florida Chapter of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. Chris represented the Florida State Fire Marshal s Office as a Standards Examiner, responsible for conducting state written and practical certification examinations. He currently is an active member of the Mantoloking Volunteer Fire Department, and serves as a deputy for the Office of Emergency Management for the Borough of Mantoloking, New Jersey. Publications: Senior editor for the IAFC/NFPA text Pump Operator Principles and Practice; and technical advisor for Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills DVD series, both by Jones and Bartlett Publishers. He has been published in fire service publications including Fire Engineering magazine. MIKE NOBLETT, CFEI Mike Noblett is Global Forensics Inc. Calgary and South Alberta Representative regarding investigations, interviews, and code related issues. Mike recently retired after 32 years of service with the City of Calgary Fire Department, including the position of Coordinator with Fire Investigation Bureau. He has extensive experience in regards to fire & explosion investigations, fire inspections, and interviewing techniques. Mike is certified in the following: Fire & Explosion Investigator (NAFI); National Fire Academy Advanced Fire/ Arson Investigation, Emmetsburg, Maryland, USA; Post Blast Investigation Level I and II; Highest level of Safety Codes Officer (Fire Investigator II/ Inspector II). Mike has been accepted as an expert in fire cause and origin in Small Claims Court, Provincial Court, Court of the Queen s Bench (Supreme Court, Alberta Division). LAURA STEVENS Laura Stewart has worked with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry for the last three years and recently moved into the FireSmart Engagement Specialist position. In this role, Laura partners with municipal fire departments across the province and provides support with engaging homeowners to take a grassroots approach to FireSmart in their neighbourhoods, building and maintaining communities that are resilient to wildfire. Prior to joining the Alberta team, Laura spent four years with a municipal fire department and was responsible for their local FireSmart program. 22 Speakers (continued) DANIEL SUNDAHL For 13 years, Daniel has been a full time firefighter and paramedic which is where he draws his motivation for his emergency service artwork. He has a passion for raising mental health and PTSD awareness for the profession. Daniel s frequent media interviews and conference presentations focus on mental health, PTSD and the negative stigma associated with occupational stress injuries. Prior to joining the fire service, Daniel was an English Teacher and has travelled the world extensively and lived in many countries. An accomplished artist, Daniel s artwork has been seen on the covers of numerous publications including EMS World, Canadian Paramedicine and the Critical Incident Stress Management course for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, among others. JOE TOWERS, CEP CFI Joe is a certified Fire Investigator (Proboard), Certified Evidence Photographer, and a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators, Fire Investigation Association of Alberta, National Association of Fire Investigators, National Fire Protection Association, and the Evidence Photographers International Council. He is qualified to the highest level of Fire Investigator/ Inspector with the Safety Codes Council of Alberta. He has over 30 years of experience in the fire and safety industry. BRIAN WYNN Brian Wynn got his start in the fire service in 1993 with the Whitecourt Fire Department, and got his dream job as Fire Chief in He was involved with the residents of the Slave Lake area where he witnessed the devastation of a community from a wild fire in He attended his first FireSmart community series in Slave Lake and this planted the FireSmart seed. With local support from Alberta Agriculture and Forestry he started driving FireSmart projects in Whitecourt with funding from FireSmart and FRIAA. Brian attended the FireSmart community series in Rocky Mountain House in 2015 with his Parks and Recreation manager. Whitecourt became a recognized FireSmart community and hosted the community series in 2017, where he co-hosted a workshop with Agriculture and Forestry. Whitecourt keeps driving all FireSmart principles in the surrounding area.
