Preface Boskoop, April 2015 Dear customer, Developing new plants is in our genes. In the past years you will have noticed our successful introductions of several new roses, shrubs, herbaceous perennials and street trees. Colourful roses on their own roots, for modern applications Beautiful shrubs which enhance biodiversity Dense weed suppressing ground cover plants Floriferous perennials, suitable for amenity plantings Robust and problem-free street tree options In this edition of the series A new generation of low-maintenance landscape plants we present our recent attractive innovations. Plants we are proud of, which suit the modern uses and maintenance methods of our customers. The high quality and modern applicability are accompanied by our eco-friendly and socially responsible business management, for which we are accredited by ISO, Milieukeur and MVO. Our Research & Development department constantly improves the existing assortment. Improvements which fit the market demands for healthy and low-maintenance plants, for floriferous and scented cultivars with new uses. With this booklet we hope to provide the many interested professionals with knowledge and information about the modern assortment of landscape and amenity plants. J.P de Vries Managing director 2 Boskoop, The Netherlands 3

1 Plants for amenity use Using the right plants in the right place allows for quick establishment. Then they will flourish and outcompete weeds. Other requirements can be allowed for; trees in narrow streets should not grow too wide; shrubs beside major roads should be tolerant to road salt. Planting in cities deliver many benefits, including greater biodiversity, improved air quality, slower rainwater run-off and a cooling of the urban microclimate. Our amenity plants have been improved by selecting and breeding. Plants selected with long flowering periods and attractive fruit create greater interest. Groundcover plants are bred to be disease resistant, keep their leaves for longer and suppress weeds. Roses on their own roots do not produce unwanted suckering. It possible to select lowmaintenance planting, without compromising on ornamental value or function. 1 Frei-Weinheim, Germany 2 Windsor Great Park, England 3 Luxembourg, Luxembourg 2 3 Amenity plants make the urban environment more attractive. Plants create an appealing landscape all year round, with colour, texture and contrasts. The ornamental value of these plants is not their only important property. Carefully selected, they offer an inexpensive to maintain, herbicide free planting solution. 4 5

Research and Development The R&D Department of Boot & Co is dedicated to breeding, selecting and testing new plants. The main genera that we concentrate on are Geranium, Hydrangea, Ligustrum, Mahonia, Prunus laurocerasus, Rosa and Weigela. Boot & Co only select plants for amenity landscape use. Working to strict criteria we only select the sturdiest, healthiest and most abundantly flowering seedlings. All our plants are selected in our development field, where they receive a minimal care, including no herbicides nor fungicides and no winter protection. They are naturally exposed to diseases, pests and extremes of weather. The most promising plants are bulked-up and tested internationally on other trial sites. Biodegradable pots Boot & Co are pioneers in the development and use of biodegradable pots. We were the first company to grow plants on a large scale in biodegradable pots. Biodegradable pots have a reduced environmental impact and save on labour and plastic disposal costs. We start by hybridising selected parent plants; producing thousands of seedlings, only a tiny number of these will be judged as suitably good to be introduced as new varieties. The plants do not have to be de-potted prior to planting. The root hairs are not damaged either, helping them to establish quickly after planting. Once planted, the pots will fully biodegrade. Our pots inpororate Solanyl, a potato starch by-product form potato processing. Added to this are natural fibres to bulk up and strengthen the mixture. The material is carbon neutral, biodegredable and non-toxic. Our biodegradeable pots consume 65% less energy in their manufacture compared with plastic pots and a corresponding reduction in their carbon footprint. 8 9

Fleur Robuste As an innovator of plants for amenity landscapes, Boot & Co s R&D department develops new cultivars that meet the strictest criteria of our customers. The most important selection criteria being: A compact, ground covering plant, quickly developing a dense leaf cover to smother weeds. Very healthy and winter hardy. Propagated by cuttings (not grafting) Floriferous over a long period in attractive colours A good balance of ornamental and functional value. The Fleur Robuste brand by Boot & Co is only given to plants that are highly suited to amenity landscaping, following extensive trialling in numerous locations. Fleur Robuste offers a selected palette of street trees, shrubs, roses, and perennials for amenity plantings. If used as recommended, these plants guarantee to give you long lasting, low maintenance and attractive planting

Zorgeloos Groen (Carefree Green) In the past decade, Boot & Co have been working on a colourful alternative to uninspiring amenity plantings, called Carefree Green. It enables residents to enjoy colourful and floriferous amenity plants, with a variety of shrubs and flowers. But at the same time, the planting needs a very low maintenance input. To achieve this, cooperation between different specialised companies was necessary. The design, plant specification, ground preparation and planting, plus knowledgeable maintenance in the first years until established. Preventing mistakes in the design and planting phase saves a lot of unscheduled costs for rectification work afterwards. The goal is to help plants establish themselves as quickly as possible, so they look after themselves. After a year or two years, the plants are almost fully grown and maintenance is easy by lowest skilled operatives. Then the considerable advantages become apparent: carefully designed planting costs considerably less per year to maintain than a lawn! This is possible because many of our plants can be maintained by clipping / pruning once a year, some of them even by flail mower. The additional investment in planting will recovered in 5 to 10 years time. At the same time urban living conditions are enhanced. We go from anonymous dull planting to colourful plant beds. This strengthens the bond of the local residents their environment. It reduces littering and other antisocial behaviour because people take more pride in surroundings they appreciate. Several projects have proven that. Scientific research has even shown that the health of the residents improves by this type of planting. We can strengthen this by involving the local residents in the planting plans, so their ideas and wishes can be incorporated. This increases their involvement with the plants in their own neighbourhood. Colourful low-maintenance landscaping is only possible by using the knowledge of different experts, who know which plants can be used in a specific location, how they will function, how to plant them correctly and how they start suppressing weeds quickly. If all factors integrate together, the concept is very successful. See for pictures of plantings we have already realised. 12 Apeldoorn, The Netherlands 13
