2 Information KELLY TREE FARM LOCATION There is a good map on our website. Clarence is located on Hwy. 30 between Cedar Rapids and Clinton in East Central Iowa. Take the blacktop road north of Clarence called X64. Go 1 mile & turn left on Quincy Ave. and go 1 more mile. We re on the left. Map at GRASS AND TREES Iowa is well known for our prairie grass and rich soil. Most grass needs a good soil to survive so when we try to plant trees on good soil, our biggest competition is perennial grasses. Trees grow very well on good soil with no grass competition. I have seen 2 year planted trees grow 2-4 per year when grass and other weeds are eliminated. Grass uses large amounts of water and soil nutrients making them unavailable to trees. Mowed grass may look nice around your trees, but it s not good for the trees. Annual weed and especially perennial grass control around trees the first 3-5 years or longer will increase growth rates by 100%-200%. Wood chips, soil tillage, or my choice, chemical herbicide can not be stressed enough to get your trees off to a good strong start and give you a larger tree in the shortest time. Thank you to all the customers that purchased trees from us in 2018! We look forward to the 2019 season and helping you with your planting projects! -Jacob Dohmen TERMS OF SALE 1. Customers are invited to inspect our tree growing areas. Call ahead. 2. All prices are F.O.B. Clarence, Iowa Prices good till Dec. 31, Seller will make every effort to get stock to buyer on date requested; however, seller will not be liable for delays caused by weather and/or other conditions beyond our control. 4. Buyer forfeits the deposit on any cancellations. 5. We do our best at producing healthy plants and shipping or delivering them to you, but the numerous conditions that may result after delivery is made, which we have no control over, prevents us from guaranteeing the survival of seedlings and transplants. 6. Plant all trees as soon as possible. When you pick up your order here you reduce the chances of shipping delays and drying out of plants. 17 SERVICES WE OFFER TREES AND SHRUBS: Finest quality Seedlings, Transplants, Potted, and Larger Shade Trees. With our root pruning of seedlings as a part of nursery production, all of our tree plantings are continuing to show a survival rate of over 90%. After 40 years of tree planting we know a quality root system is the most important part of any tree for survival. Iowa inspection #468 PRE PLANT SITE PREPARATION: Whether you are using a tree planter or hand planting, site prep is essential. Undesirable vegetation and grasses must be removed to allow your newly planted tree to survive. You should plan 1 year ahead to get this part under control. TREE AND SHURB PLANTING: We can plant your trees at correct spacing and species that are correct for your site. You have the right to plant what you want in your planting and will work with you and any govt. agency to see that this happens. WINDBREAKS: Whether in town or in the country, we can design, and install your trees that are designed for this type of long term windbreak protection. There are many poor choices of trees that people can put in their windbreaks, we can do it right the first time for your home, farm or business. FSI -- FOREST STAND IMPROVEMENT: We can remove undesirable species and then prune or thin your desirable species in your forest area. This act will greatly increase the ability of your forest area to grow quality trees at a much higher value. For every $1 spent on FSI it will return over $10 in value. This act should be performed periodically usually starting at about 8 years after planting. POST PLANTING MAINTENCE: After planting, competing vegetation must be controlled the first 3 years for your trees to thrive or even survive. The use of herbicides is usually the cheapest and easiest way to get your trees off to a healthy start. We can also advise you on various types of control for animals that can devastate a tree planting. LARGER SHADE TREES AND PLANTING: We sell and install larger shade trees around your home, farm or business. Proper trees for the soil conditions and placement will provide shade and beauty that will enhance your whole property and will increase your property value. LIVESTOCK BUILDINGS: We have become the leader in Iowa for the placement of trees and shrubs around these buildings. Fast growing trees are 20 tall in 3 years & block odors and beautify the site. Several cost share programs are available for these projects. Our website has a whole section devoted to this. 2

3 On quantities less than 25 per species on small bare root plants the price is $5 per plant BLACK OAK Zone 2 to 7. Large tree with small acorns - common on dry, sandy or poor soils. Not a favorite lumber tree but grows well on above soils & can have a nice red leaf in fall. Red Oak family. OUR GUARANTEE Warranty on Trees and Shrubs All of our bare root trees and shrubs have no warranty; there are just too many variables to survival on these trees and shrubs. Our potted trees do carry a warranty. Windbreak trees carry a warranty that we will replace or refund up to 10% of the trees lost, if you are losing more than that something else is wrong. We do not warranty trees that die or are damaged beyond our control such as: droughts, floods, weather, animals (above and below ground) lawn mowers, neglect (no water or no weed control), planted too deep or in subsoil, winter damage, trees that are resold, or any other causes we have no control over. We can not guarantee plants sent through the mail or UPS. BUR OAK Zone 2 to 8. Valuable brown wood, rot resistant, good to poor, dry soil, medium growth, best for tough conditions, sweet acorns, White Oak family. Bare root $2.50 CHESTNUT OAK Zone 4 to 8. Survives in poor soil or high PH soil, fast growth on good soil, bears large sweet acorns at a young age. White Oak family. Bare root $2.50 Potted 5-6 $60.00 Each CHINQUAPIN OAK Zone 4 to 7. Medium size iwth small sweet acorns in Iowa occurs on high PH limestone bluffs & does very well on other soils. White Oak family. Bare root $2.25 $ For trees to be eligible for warranty replacement we must receive notification by September 1st if planted in the springtime, or July 1st of the next year if planted in the fall. Trees must be returned with roots attached. Warranty does not include the cost of shipping or planting. Successful tree planting - Reforestation We believe that over 50% of a successful planting can be attributed to high quality seedlings with a large root system. The above ground portion of a seedling has little to do with survival and we strive to produce the root system that will survive after transplanting. We recommend: 1. Kill all competing vegetation with herbicides, tillage does not kill existing vegetation. 2. Use the best tree planting machine you can get if planting over 1,000 trees. Most homemade planting machines I have seen scour the edges of the planting trench and then fail to seal the trench, causing death of seedlings. 3. Use proper spacing - I like 12 ft. between rows and 5 ft. between plants (726 per acre). It fills in fast and lets you mow longer and allows room for a tractor & loader to drive down the rows after 10 years, making pruning much easier from the loader. 4. Use herbicides or mulch to control competing vegetation the first year, but 3 years are better. 5. We like to plant larger red oak in the row and when I mow the last time in the fall for animal control, the red leaves show me where the row is. 6. Plant at least 4 different species, considering the soils present, and no more than 40% walnut. 7. Control destructive animals.

8 WINDBREAKS EVERGREENS FOR WINDBREAKS AND YARDS It has been over 40 years since we planted our first windbreak. We have learned a lot in that time, watching trees survive (or not) with droughts, floods, diseases, insects, and extremes of heat and cold. Use our experience to plant the windbreak that will survive in your area. We sell many different kinds of evergreen trees. Always check your soil conditions and use the proper tree that will do well in your situation. We ship UPS bareroot evergreens coast to coast. They should be shipped before June 1 to avoid excess heat during shipping. Our potted trees are light, easy to plant and the small amount of roots lost during planting are replaced within 60 days. By the time the heat and dryness of the summer comes the first year, the plant has a balance of roots to its foliage. Watering is only needed if dry conditions occur. If you provide the proper weed control around these trees, they should be 8-12 ft. tall in 5 years.
