American Arborvitae (Seedling) Description: The American Arborvitae is a conifer evergreen tree that is used as an accent tree or as a privacy tree. Tall and elegant, this low maintenance tree has become very popular as a privacy screens and windbreaks. The American Arborvitae is a slow growing tree, but once established it can withstand considerable heat and drought with low maintenance. The American arborvitae grows to a height of 40 60' and a spread of 10 15' at maturity. Planting Suggestion: Plant them 10 feet apart to create a living privacy wall or to create a windbreak. Once established, this evergreen can stand considerable heat and drought. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Eastern Red Cedar (Seedling) Description: The Eastern Red Cedar is a fast-growing evergreen conifer. If you re a birdlover, this is the tree for you. The Eastern Red Cedar grows in a foot pyramidal shape that is dense providing terrific cover for birds and other wildlife. The Eastern Red Cedar has blue-green foliage that sometimes turns a darker brown-green shade in the winter months. Hardy and easy to transplant, the Eastern Red Cedar is a tree you can plant and forget about. It will adapt to almost any conditions and provide you years of enjoyment. Thanks to its tolerance of heat, salt, a wide range of soils and other adverse conditions, the eastern red cedar can be put to good use on the farm in windbreaks and in city landscapes for hedges, screens, clumps or even as specimen trees. Planting Recommendation: Seedlings should be planted in a firm weed free bed at a spacing of 3 to 6 feet. Seedlings should be placed in a hole or furrow large enough to contain the entire root system without bending. Weed and other competing vegetation must be controlled the first two years of establishment. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: 8-25 feet Sun Exposure: Full Sun - Partial Sun Price: $2.00 per plant Page 3
Colorado Blue Spruce (Seedling) Description: One of our most popular ornamental conifers, the Colorado blue spruce (or simply, blue spruce) is a truly magnificent sight. It is commonly used for Christmas trees or as ornamentals. The species generally reaches a height of feet at maturity with a diameter of 2-3 feet. It has a narrow, pyramidal shape and cone-shaped crown. While blue spruce grows relatively slowly, it is long-lived and may reach ages of years. Its silvery blue-green coloring and perfect Christmas tree shape make this tree a great landscaping focal point on commercial and residential properties. It is also widely used for privacy or a windbreak. Blue spruce is moderately shade tolerant and grows best in deep, rich, high moisture areas. It displays its unique silvery blue-green color year-round. The Colorado Blue Spruce features needles that are stiff, prickly and roughly 1 1½" in length and grows in a columnar, pyramidal shape. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Norway Spruce (Seedling) Description: Throughout the globe, this tree has many uses including lumber, pulpwood, Christmas trees and landscape specimen trees. Its dense branching pattern and tolerance of soil variations has also made it a popular tree for windbreaks. If you have enough space and want to add a sense of formal dignity to your landscape, the Norway spruce will suit you well. The Norway Spruce commonly found as an ornamental tree in most urban environments or a windbreak in rural environments as it rapidly grows to a height of 80 feet tall and 40 feet wide. This species is easy to adapt to a wide variety of soil types. Planting Recommendation: Norway Spruce prefers moist but well-drained, acidic soils that may be organic, sandy, or loamy. However, it is perhaps the most adaptable common evergreen tree to harsh conditions, including poor, clay, rocky, dry soils of acidic, neutral, or alkaline ph. It thrives under seasonal drought once it is established, and takes well to city pollution. Its only requirement is to not be sited in wet soils, where it will quickly die. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Page 4
Eastern White Pine (Seedling) Description: The Eastern White Pine is a valuable commercial tree but also favored in parks and spacious yards both for its beauty and its fast growth. This tree is a fast growing, longliving, needled evergreen native to the United States & Canada. Although pyramidal in its early years, it matures to a broad oval habit with an irregular crown. Bluish green needles (to 5" long) are soft to the touch and appear in bundles of five. Cylindrical, brown cones (4-8" long) are usually not produced until 5-10 years. Eastern White Pine is commonly used for windbreaks and erosion control. Planting Recommendation: White Pine performs best in evenly moist, rich, well-drained, acidic soils in full sun. It is often intolerant of soils that are alkaline in ph and poorly drained; therefore, the heavy clay soils of much of central and western Ohio cause it to struggle in parts of this region, while it often thrives in eastern Ohio. Its rapid growth rate allows for a quick result in terms of a harvestable timber tree, a mature landscape tree, or as a cut Christmas tree. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Price: $1.75 per plant Buttonbush (Seedling) Description: Buttonbush is a rather coarse, deciduous shrub with an open-rounded growth habit that typically reaches 6-12 feet tall. Tiny, tubular, 5-lobed fragrant flowers with appear in a dense, spherical, long-stalked flower head in early to midsummer. Flower heads are very attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies and will mature into a hard-spherical ball-like fruit consisting of multiple tiny twoseeded nutlets. Flowers will bloom from June to September. Buttonbush has glossy, ovate, and bright green leaves up to 6 inches long in pairs. Leaves will emerge late in the spring around May. Planting Recommendation: Easily grown in moist, humusy (high organic matter) soils in full sun to part shade. Grows very well in wet soils, including flood conditions and shallow standing water. Adapts to a wide range of soils except dry ones. Pruning is usually not necessary, but may be done in early spring to shape. If plants become unmanageable, however, they may be cut back near to the ground in early spring to revitalize. Mature Height: 5-12 feet Mature Spread: 4-8 feet Price: $2.00 per plant Page 5
White Oak (Seedling) Description: It is a large, stately tree that grows up to over 100 feet tall, and 38 to 50 inches in diameter, with a round to wide spreading irregular crown. White oak bark is whitish or light gray, varying from scaly to irregularly platy or ridged and furrowed. Leaves are bright green above and whitish underneath. Male flowers are green and 2-4 inches long, while female flowers are reddish and they appear as single spikes with the leaves. White oak acorns are oval; about a quarter of the acorn body is covered with a cap which drops off at maturity. Planting Recommendation: The white oak prefers slightly acidic to neutral, deep, moist, well-drained soil. While adaptable to other soil textures, it is intolerant of alkaline, shallow or abused urban soils. It can, however, tolerate moderate drought and occasional wet soil. White oak is generally classified as intermediate in its tolerance to shade. Its tolerance decreases as a tree becomes older and larger. Partial shade is beneficial for germination. Natural stands are often found in areas with loam and clay soil. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Pin Oak (Seedling) Description: Pin oak is a moderately large tree with normal heights ranging from 70 to 90 feet with diameters between 2 and 3 feet. Trees reaching 120 feet tall with 5-foot diameters are occasionally encountered on good sites. The bark of this tree is smooth, reddish to grayish-brown during the juvenile period, becoming darker and shallowly fissured as the tree growth slows with age. The lower branches of pin oak are prostrate to descending, with smooth, slender, reddish-brown twigs. The leaves change in color from a dark green to a deep scarlet red in fall. The leaves are deciduous but will usually persist on the tree into winter. The flowers of pin oak emerge soon after new leaves unfold in spring (April to mid-may). Planting Recommendation: The pin oak grows in acidic, loamy, moist, rich, sandy, well-drained, wet and clay soils. It can tolerate wet conditions, including moderate flooding. Pin oak typically requires management only during the first few years after out planting to a permanent site. Weed competition and deer browse must be managed in many locations. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Page 6
Sycamore (Seedling) Description: American Sycamore, while not the tallest tree, is considered the most massive tree as defined by its circumference in the entire eastern half of the United States, where is it native including all of Ohio. This species is easily identified by its height, its spreading canopy with several massive branches, and its white bark in winter. The paths of creeks and rivers can be easily seen from a distance in winter by following the white bark of barren Sycamore canopies. Also known as Sycamore or American Planetree, this tree easily reaches heights of 80 feet tall and 60 feet wide, but can grow much larger. Leaves are medium green, fuzzy in spring when they emerge. Planting Recommendation: American Sycamore prefers deep, moist, rich soils of variable ph that are either well-drained or moderately drained, as it is often found naturally along the edges of bodies of water, and in wet areas of fields or woodlands. It tolerates much drier and poorer soils, but does not like the city pollution that London Planetree survives. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Mature Spread: feet Sugar Maple (Seedling) Description: Sugar Maple is a favorite shade tree with reliable fall color, found in the forests and meadows throughout all of Ohio. It is valued for its hard, dense, fine-grained and difficult-to-split wood, as well as a source of sap collection for maple syrup. The Sugar Maple puts on quite a show in the fall with leaves turning yellow, burnt orange, and red. It develops a dense crown that offers great shade. Sugar Maple produces small, greenish-yellow glowers in groups that curve downward on long, delicate stems, blooming in April and May. Planting Recommendation: Sugar Maple thrives when it is planted or transplanted into rich, moderately deep soils having even moisture coupled with good drainage. While it prefers acidic soils, it adapts readily to those of neutral or alkaline ph. Clay soils cause it to struggle more in terms of root penetration to tap into deep soil moisture in times of droughtmature Height: feet Page 7
Red Maple (Seedling) Description: Red Maple is a tree located throughout all of Ohio, found naturally in moist areas of open woodlands and more commonly along creeks and bottomlands where the soil is constantly moist to wet. In urban areas, it is abundantly found as a popular shade tree, noted for its brilliant red fall color. Its branching is upright and generally symmetrical when young, becoming more rounded at maturity and generally without the downswept nature of its lower limbs (like those of Silver Maple). Red maple is one of the best named of all trees, featuring something red in each of the seasons buds in winter, flowers in spring, leafstalks in summer, and brilliant foliage in autumn. Planting Recommendation: Although Red Maple has been called a cosmopolitan species (meaning that it can be found in many different environments in nature), it strongly prefers deep, moist to wet, acidic, rich soils. This site preference gives it the alternative common name of Swamp Maple. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: 40 feet Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Silver Maple (Seedling) Description: Silver Maple, a tree found throughout all of Ohio, is a common shade tree in urban areas and primarily a wet site tree in rural areas. Its leaves are the most deeply indented of any type of maple, and it is named for the fact that its leaf undersides are silvery, and in a breeze the bicolor effect of dark green and silver hues is displayed in its canopy. Its branching is upright but irregular and sparse when young, becoming denser and spreading with maturity. A distinctive trait of the lower branches is that they become very pendulous yet upswept at their tips. The bark, too, is silver in color, particularly when the tree is young. Planting Recommendation: The adaptability of Silver Maple to a wide range of soils (organic, clay, sandy, or rocky) and moisture levels (wet, moist, or dry) accounts for its widespread planting in urban sites, although it strongly prefers wetland areas (swamps, river banks, flood plains) in nature. This site preference gives it the alternative common name of Water Maple. Page 8
White Flowering Dogwood (Seedling) Description: White flowering Dogwood, found throughout all of Ohio and the entire eastern half of the United States, is one of the most popular ornamental trees, with four-season appeal. Showy early spring flowers are the yearly highlight, but red fruits and crimson foliage in autumn, large floral buds and checkered bark in winter, and year-round layered branching add to its appeal. As an understory and woodland edge tree, its early spring blossoms stand out in forests before the leaves take over. It may also be found as a single or multi-trunked tree in open fields, where it may reach 15 feet tall and 20 feet wide. White flowers show their beauty in spring, foliage turns a vibrant red-purple in fall and glossy red fruits attract winter songbirds for the enjoyment of all. Planting Recommendation: Flowering Dogwood strongly prefers evenly moist, well-drained, fertile, deep soils of acidic ph, in partial sun. It grudgingly adapts to lesser conditions, and in urban environments it often is sited in poor, dry, rocky, clay soils of alkaline ph, in full sun. Mature Height: 25 feet Mature Spread: 25 feet Tulip Poplar (Seedling) Description: Tulip poplar is actually not a poplar, but a member of the magnolia family. The leaves are tulip-shaped, alternate, and simple. The leaf is smooth on both surfaces, dark green and lustrous above, pale and often with a slight whitish bloom beneath. Twigs are moderately stout, olive-brown, to reddish brown, very smooth and usually lustrous; the large terminal bud has two large duck-bill shaped scales. Tulip poplar makes a desirable street, shade, or ornamental tree but the large size it attains makes it unsuited for many sites. Its good points for aesthetic use are: (1) rapid growth (2) pyramidal form (3) resistance to insect and disease damage (4) unusual leaves and attractive flowers, and (5) yellow autumnal color. Tulip poplar produces tulip-shaped, light greenish yellow flowers from April to June. Planting Recommendation: It does best on moderately moist, deep, well drained, loose textured soils; it rarely grows well in very dry or very wet situations. It will tolerate a ph of 4.5 to 7.5. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: 40 feet Page 9
Highbush Cranberry (Liner) Description: Highbush cranberry (American Cranberrybush) is used as an ornamental plant and valued for its edible fruits. The fruit is commonly gathered from wild stands in late August. It is a common resident of open, wet woodlands and beside streams and other bodies of water. This shrub has stout stems and thick branches, and may reach 12 feet tall by 12 feet wide when found in the open, with an arching growth habit at maturity that leaves the center of the plant devoid of branches. Modern landscape cultivars of this species have a much more compact and dense growth habit. Planting Recommendation: Highbush Cranberry prefers moist to wet soils of rich or average composition, and of acidic ph. However, it tolerates dry soils of acidic, neutral, or alkaline ph reasonably well. It thrives in full sun to partial sun, and performs well in partial shade to full shade, although its growth habit will be much more gangly. Mature Height: 12 feet Mature Spread: 12 feet Price: $2.00 per plant Black Cherry (Seedling) Description: Black Cherry, a rapidly growing woodland tree common throughout all of Ohio, is often found in open fields and previously harvested forests. Fragrant white flowers in slender pendulous clusters (racemes to 6 long) appear with the foliage in spring (late April-May). Flowers are followed by drooping clusters of small red cherries (to 3/8 diameter) that ripen in late summer to dark purple-black. Black Cherry displays a symmetrical, often pyramidal growth habit, but it often divides into several upright branches due to storm damage and assumes an irregular shape as it matures. Also known as Wild Black Cherry, this tree may grow to 60 feet tall by 30 feet wide (or larger) when it is found in an open field. Foliage turns attractive shades of yellow and rose in fall. Planting Recommendation: Black Cherry prefers deep, moist, rich, well-drained soils of variable ph under full sun to partial sun conditions, but tolerates relatively dry, poor soils as well, with a reduced growth rate. Mature Height: feet Mature Spread: feet Price: $1.75 per plant Page 10
Red Bud (Seedling) Description: Redbud, also known as Eastern Redbud or Judas Tree, is abundant in the southern two-thirds of Ohio, with scattered distribution in the northern one-third of the state. It heralds the arrival of spring with its showy, lavender-pink flowers that typically open in April, long before the foliage emerges. This ornamental tree is rapidly growing and usually multitrunked in the wild, having a vase shape with a rounded crown that reaches about 20 feet tall and 20 feet wide at maturity, when found in the open. However, since it is often located at the edge of woodlands, it commonly has a leaning growth habit, trying to grow into as much sunlight as possible. Planting Recommendation: Redbud prefers deep, moist, organic, well-drained soils, but adapts to many less-thanfavorable soils of either acidic or alkaline ph as long as they are not wet. It grows most rapidly and flowers most prolifically in full sun if adequate moisture is available during the heat of summer, but it is often found in partial sun to partial shade in nature. Mature Height: 30 feet Mature Spread: 10 feet Common Lilac (Seedling) Description: A medium to large hardy shrub with stout, spreading branches developing a somewhat oval to irregularly rounded crown. Showy, fragrant flowers. The common lilac is an old-fashioned, long-lived, and well-loved lilac best known for its fragrant flowers. It is extremely hardy and thrives with little care which make it a lovely shrub for a specimen planting, in masses, screens, hedges, or mixed in shrub borders. Planting Recommendation: Common Lilac is widely adapted to a variety of different soil types and prefers a ph of It is a drought tolerant plant that does not withstand ponding. It needs good air circulation as well as moist, organic rich and well-drained soils. It will flower on old wood and is best to prune after flowering. Mature Height: 8-12 feet Mature Spread: 6-10 feet Page 11
Butterfly Bush (Seedling) Description: This fast-growing, deciduous shrub with long, arching shoots will reach heights of 6 to 8 feet. Although the green leaves add a welcome bit of color to any landscape, it is the masses of blossoms long, seductively spiked trusses that are special. From summer to autumn, the butterfly bush bears dense panicles, 12 inches or more long, that fill the air with a fruity scent. At its northern limits, the shrubs can die back, sometimes all the way to the ground. No matter. Butterfly bush is vigorous and undemanding and will send up new shoots, given a sunny location and average garden soil. Planting Recommendation: Butterfly bush is best planted in the spring or fall in fertile, well-drained soil. Plants should be spaced 5-10 feet apart and watered thoroughly. Water in the summer if rainfall is less than one inch per week. Apply thin layer of compost & mulch each spring to retain moisture and control weeds. Mature Height: 6-8 feet Mature Spread: 4-5 feet Dwarf Red Raspberry (Seedling) Description: Dwarf Raspberry is common throughout in both forest and open meadow or shrub habitats. While its principal means of reproduction and spread is by its long vegetative runners that leave small rooted woody crowns at its nodes, and become the start for new plants the following year, you'll rarely if ever find it in dense colonies like many other Rubus species. Vegetative clumps might be mistaken for Wild Strawberry (Fragaria species), though raspberry leaves are more sharply pointed with double teeth. Also similar is the related Arctic Raspberry (Rubus arcticus), which has consistently pink to purplish flowers up to 1 inch across and smooth to sparsely hairy leaves and stems. The fruit is unmistakably a raspberry and, while never producing a heavy crop that can be harvested, the few scattered berries found here and there are pretty tasty. Planting Recommendation: Provide well-drained, neutral soil. Fertilize in early spring and in summer. Produces on second year canes; after harvest, prune only canes that have fruited, leaving all newly emerged canes to overwinter and produce next year's fruit. In late spring, cut all dead canes with no new growth at ground level. Mature Height: 4-6 inches Mature Spread: Page 12
Domestic Apple (Seedling) Description: The apple is a small tree that can reach 25 feet in height with a crown spread of 25 feet. The leaves are simple, oval, have small serrations along the margin, and are arranged alternately along the branches. A typical leaf is 2 5 inches long, inches wide, and has an acuminate tip. The twigs, buds, and undersides of the leaves usually have white pubescence. The bark is brown and scaly and mature trees in the park can have a trunk diameter of up to 24 inches. Showy, white, five pedaled blossoms, often tinged with pink, are found on the tree in late spring. The flowers are pollinated by bees and other insects. The poaceous fruits mature through the summer and become ripe and ready to eat in the fall. Ripe apples range in color from green to yellow to red or a mixture of these colors. Planting Recommendation: Apple Trees require well drained nutrient rich soil and moderate sunlight. When in bloom in the spring or heavy with fruit in the fall, apple trees stand out from other trees in the forest. Soil needs to be moderately rich and retain moisture as well as air; mulch with straw, hay, or some other organic material to keep soil moist and provide nutrients as they decompose. Mature Height: 25 feet Mature Spread: 25 feet Price: $2.00 per plant Ohio Buckeye (Liner) Description: Ohio Buckeye, the state tree of Ohio, is found primarily as an understory tree in the western half of Ohio, where the soils are more alkaline in ph. However, it is scattered throughout the eastern half of the state, except in extreme northeastern and extreme southeastern Ohio. Its lightweight wood is used in the production of artificial limbs, and the holding of a "buckeye nut" in one's pocket is considered good luck. A native of the Midwestern and Great Plains states, trees found in the open may reach 60 feet tall by 30 feet wide, but as a native understory it is often half that size Planting Recommendation: Ohio Buckeye prefers moist, well-drained soils of variable ph that are rich and deep, in partially sunny to partially shaded conditions. It adapts to average soils that are occasionally dry, but moderate to heavy leaf scorch will develop by mid-summer, especially when sited in full sun. Ohio Buckeye prefers shady conditions in its youth, but grows in full sun to full shade from youth through maturity. Mature Height: 60 feet Mature Spread: 30 feet Price: $5.00 per plant Page 13
Spicebush *NEW FOR 2018* (Liner) Description: Spicebush, found throughout all of Ohio, is usually found as an understory shrub of moist to wet woodlands that is one of the first shrubs to bloom, usually in late winter. Its twigs and branchlets, when scraped, emit a spicy fragrance. It has bright red fruits that appear in late summer and early autumn on female shrubs, and are often quickly eaten by wildlife. Its dark green, glossy foliage, like that of Pawpaw, is unusual for woody plants that can thrive in full shade. Planting Recommendation: Spicebush strongly prefers permanently moist to wet soils that are rich and of variable ph, especially under shaded conditions. However, it adapts reasonably well to dry, average soils in sunny locations, where its growth will be denser and less vigorous, but with better flowering and fruiting performance, the latter on female trees only. The fibrous root system transplants easily, and re-establishment after transplant shock is best remedied by copious amounts of water. Mature Height: 12 feet Mature Spread: 15 feet Sun Preference: Prefers full to partial shade Price: $2.50 per plant *Note- this one is a liner that is two to three feet tall* Yellow Birch *NEW FOR 2018* (Liner) Description: Yellow Birch is named for its silvery-yellow, thinly-peeling bark that develops with maturity. It is often found growing alongside Black Birch in forests, and these two species are among the first to colonize fields and roadway cuts. Yellow Birch is prized for its heavy, hard wood (used as a finish wood or veneer in furniture, cabinetry, doors, and floors, and often stained or varnished) and its excellent yellow fall color. Planting Recommendation: Yellow Birch prefers moist, rich, deep, well-drained, acidic soils in sites that have relatively cool summers. It tolerates drier soils, and somewhat tolerates soils of alkaline or neutral ph, but does not compete well in the wild or perform well in urban landscapes under these conditions. Mature Height: 70 feet Mature Spread: 50 feet Sun Preference: Prefers full to partial shade Price: $3.00 per plant *Note- this one is a liner that is two to three feet tall* Page 14
Common Persimmon *NEW FOR 2018* (Seedling) Description: Persimmon is primarily known for its ripened fruits, when provide food for animals and humans alike in mid- to late autumn. It is also known as the tree that provides wood for some of the best wooden golf club heads and billiard cues that can be made; historically, the fine-grained wood was also used in the production of shuttles for the textile industry. Persimmon has a slow to medium growth rate. Planting Recommendation: Persimmon is quite adaptable to a variety of soil, moisture, and polluted conditions. It prefers moist, well-drained, average soils of various ph's, but easily adapts to poor, rocky, clay, sandy, or even organic soils of dry or moist constitution. It will not tolerate wet sites, but it can survive on thin soils or strip-mined soils. Mature Height: 50 feet Mature Spread: 30 feet Sun Preference: Prefers full to partial sunlight Page 15
