1 Hellebores Hellebores are great options for winter containers, cut flowers, flowerbeds, or even naturalizing under trees. They are shade-loving and ever; all parts of the plant are toxic, making them deer and rabbit resistant. Plant in good well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Feed in the fall with rose and flower food; deadhead in late spring. Remove old and damaged leaves as needed. Hellebores only special need is that they like neutral to alkaline soil, while Northwest soils are naturally acid. Apply garden lime yearly to correct for this, or put a handful of lime chips around each plant as an attractive mulch that will slowly release calcium into your hellebore s root zone. Hellebores were represented for many years by just two species, the Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger) and the Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis). Now growers offer multiple varieties with increased vigor, unique foliage, a wider range of bloom times, and a huge range of colors. Some hellebores are available as tissue-cultured clones; others are grown from seed and will show more variability in flower color and form. Cloned cultivars have single quotes around the name, while a seed-grown variety will not. For example, Jacob is a clone, Wester Flisk is a seed-grown variety.
