Even though some varieties are listed as self-fruitful, they will set fruit more heavily and more regularly if they are cross-pollinated. Choose two plants which have the same bloom season or the next one. Apple trees are offered in 3 distinct sizes. Dwarf varieties get to be 5 to 8 feet tall, semi-dwarf varieties are usually 12 to 16 feet tall, and standard varieties get between 20 and 30 feet tall. The size variations allow for apple trees to be planted in small spaces and easier harvesting. Variety Fruit Bloomer Zone Description Apple Braeburn Red Mid-season 4 Semi-sweet. 59 59 Caring for Your Plants The following is a guide only. When you have selected a suitable site: 1.) Dig a hole 1' wider than the ball or container and as deep. (It is important that the plant be planted at or slightly above the surrounding ground level.) 2.) Carefully remove from the root ball any inorganic material that will not decay within 3 months. Example: plastic bags, plastic burlap or containers. If in container fluff the roots. Do not remove entire wire basket from B&B, doing so can ruin the integrity of the root ball and void any warranty. After the tree is set in the hole and backfilled by 1/3, you may remove the top 1/3 of the wire basket and cut the rope and pull the burlap away from the trunk. 3.) Site the plant to your satisfaction. Place the root ball in the center of the hole Use planting mix of organic compost, peat moss, or loam/compost mix. As the hole is backfilled, it is important to pack firmly the backfill material in 4" layers. This prevents any air pockets. 4.) After the plant is properly backfilled, a shallow saucer should be prepared by mounding up the soil, 1' out from the base of the plant (2-3' for large trees). This saucer is important as your first few watering s should saturate the entire area in and around your newly installed plant. 5.) Water is vital. Fill the saucer 3 times immediately after planting, once daily for one week and then weekly for the first summer. During hot weather, it is advisable to spray the plant with water from a hose to help cut down moisture loss. *See next page for additional information. 6.) Most plants have natural mulch where they grew in the wild. With this in mind, the addition of 4" of mulch will tend to keep the roots cool and retard evaporation of soil moisture. Suitable mulch would be pine bark. Peat moss is not a good mulch. Taper the mulch away from the crown of the plant. 7.) After one month, we recommend fertilizing with a mild liquid fertilizer that is formulated for newly installed plants. It is very important not to over fertilize. Read and follow the directions on the fertilizer package. 8.) If you have planted a large tree, it may be appropriate to stake this tree. 9.) Once established (after one year) most plants will benefit from an annual application of a good slow release nursery fertilizer in early spring or summer. Follow the directions on the fertilizer package. Do not fertilizer in the fall.

60 60 How much and how often should I water? Probably more than you have been. Proper watering is critical to your plant's health. Regular watering will also help to ensure maximum flowering and proper growth. The following instructions are just guidelines. No watering schedule is a substitute for observing the condition of your newly planted plants every day. The concept behind this watering schedule is to ensure deep root watering. One of the biggest mistakes people make is insufficient watering of their new plants. Most people think that because they have an irrigation system for their lawn that also sprays their plant beds, their trees and shrubs are receiving enough water. Lawn watering systems are programmed to run one to three times a day for a short period of time, usually between 10 to 20 minutes. This soaks only the first few inches of soil, which is fine for lawns because of their shallow root systems. Trees and shrubs need to develop deep reaching roots to allow them to withstand drought, extreme cold, and for trees - wind. Shallow watering encourages shallow weak roots. Trees and shrubs require slow, deep watering, reaching down well past the bottom of the root ball. They do best on drip irrigation system or soaker hose. If that is not an option, place your hose at the base of the plant and turn on the water just enough to start it dripping, and just leave it for several hours. Depending on how hot the weather is, and how much rain we've gotten, this may need to be done as often as daily, or as little as twice a week. To check the soil, dig down 2 4 just outside the root mass of the plant and water only if the soil feels dry to the touch. Feeling the soil for moisture content is the BEST method for gauging dryness. Only sampling can tell you when the soil is adequately moist, too dry, or too wet. As tree and shrub nurserymen we use the old adage 1 inch of rain a week will keep our established plants happy. If we do not get help from Mother Nature in the form of rain, supplemental watering is critical for your plants success. Deep watering should continue until the plants go dormant in the fall. This will ensure that they are adequately hydrated until spring. This is especially true for all evergreen plant material.

63 63 HYDROSEEDING Hydroseeding is the process of spraying grass seed, wood fiber fertilizer, lime, and water over the soil in order to establishment a lawn. We use top quality seed or wildflower mix, Hydrofine lime fertilizer, Conwed fiber mulch, and hydrogel for reduced water needs. Our Finn Hydroseeder has a 1,700 gallon tank which will cover approximately 25,000 square feet per tank. Hydroseeding is the most economical choice for establishing the desired turf without the expense, time, material costs or installation demands of sodding or traditional hand-seeding methods. The lawn quality that hydroseeding affords is much healthier, greener and longer lasting. This is because the root establishment is deeper into the soil and avoids the shock of being transplanted into foreign soils. Hydroseeding provides a thicker, more uniform lawn that essentially consists of a mat of interlocking fibers creating the ideal growing environment that doesn t have the threat of seams showing as with sod or sparse, patchy areas with hand-seeding. **For more information and quotes, call and ask for Len** TREE/SHRUB TRANSPLANTING MACHINERY RENTAL Mini-loader with Optimal 850 Tree Spade Kubota Tractor with 880 Tree Spade CAT with Care Tree Spade CAT with Optimal 1700 Tree Spade (33" root ball) (36" root ball) (42" root ball) (65" root ball) All tree spade work billed portal to portal (minimum 2 hours) and includes operator.
