2 A Warm Welcome Contents Click on the section you are interested in below About Hillier Hillier Merchandising Calendar Hillier Essentials: Perennials Shrubs Grasses Feature Plants A-Z Plant Index Welcome to the Hillier Plant List 2017/18, your guide to all the wonderful plants available to you from Hillier Nurseries. At Hillier, our mission is To inspire the creation of green living spaces for now and the future. Our love affair with plants and the natural world has been thriving for over 150 years. We want to share that passion and knowledge with you, providing great products and service so you can inspire and hearten your customers. Ultimately, our aim is to help you sell more plants that your customers will cherish and enjoy. In keeping with this mission, we have made some changes to our plant list this year to make it as informative, easy to navigate and inspiring as possible. There are two clear sections. At the front, you will find our Merchandising Calendar. This showcases the most important and popular plants available to order each month. Following this are our Essentials pages. This is an A-Z of all our smaller volume or more unusual plant ranges beyond the Merchandising Calendar. We hope this simplified approach will help you to easily order, plan your promotions and offer advice to your customers. We recently asked you how you would like to receive your plant list. It became very clear that there is no one-size-fits-all answer. So, this year our plant list will be available digitally - on our website or on a USB stick to support the environment - or can also be requested as a printed version if preferred. The horticulture industry, like much of the world, is going through a digital revolution and we aim to keep at the cutting edge. On our new website, launched in late 2016, you can find our complete plant list plus our latest looking good and availability lists, which are updated weekly. This makes it even easier to stay up to date with the very best in current plant stock. One thing that hasn t changed is the level of service and support on offer from our nursery, production, despatch and sales teams. We are always here to help and are looking forward to another fantastic year of growing together. Wholesale Sales Team 2 3

3 About Hillier GREAT BRITISH NURSERY We are proud our products are British grown on our nurseries Robert Hillier, Chairman Hillier Nurseries Our Plants Growing Expertise Plants are at the heart of our business. Hillier Nurseries is known for growing an unbeatably wide range of trees and shrubs - a reputation established by the late Sir Harold Hillier, whose private collection of plants became the world-renowned Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. We grow across 60 acres of land over two production sites in Hampshire. We also work on an exclusive basis with one contract grower in Dorset for specialist crops. Hillier has always been a pioneer within horticulture. We were one of the first nurseries to extensively use glasshouses instead of polytunnels and one of the first to use Spanish tunnels to protect certain outdoor plants, like Mahonia, which benefit from the airflow provided. To help us produce consistently excellent plants, we create a blueprint for each plant s lifecycle. This clearly sets out the desired growing requirements, including specifications, potting and spacing. Environmental Awareness Hillier pursues policies that are both commercially and environmentally beneficial. We aim to work innovatively, sustainably and with integrity, to secure our position as an industry leader and a leader of good environmental practice. One of our most successful projects has been to improve water management. In the late 1980 s, we realised using mains water was not an environmentally sound way to water our crops, so we constructed our own reservoir and water recycling treatment plant on site. We also manage our water use, with information from the Government s Waterlink project. Irrigation on our nursery is controlled by evaposensors and our sprinkler systems ensure economic use of water. We have an integrated pest and disease management approach. We use biological controls wherever possible. We are working to reduce our use of peat, in line with government requirements for the industry. Peat-free growing is more expensive, but we can and do grow entirely peat-free for some customers when requested. Innovation Over the years, Hillier has been responsible for numerous plant introductions, many of which have become essentials in British gardens. Our reenergised focus on Research & Development, through our dedicated R&D team, means we continually test new plant varieties. Our sourcing of new materials and ideas extends all over the world. Our Team Our Sales Team are based at our Head Office in Ampfield, Hampshire. We pride ourselves on being hardworking and knowledgeable, ensuring you are stocking the correct range of plants at the right time and in the correct quantities. On our nurseries, we have a team of full-time workers, including our experienced nursery managers and section leaders dedicated to particular plants. In spring, we employ and train additional staff from a local agency. Since 2014, we have been running our own Hillier Core Skills training programme to provide all nursery workers with essential horticultural knowledge. All Hillier nursery members are taught and tested on essential skills like plant naming, irrigation and pests and diseases. Our core skills programme can take individuals from beginner to management level. Ordering and Delivery Our aim is to make it as easy as possible for you to find and order plants through us. Using our interactive plant list, you can easily reserve your stock for the next 12 months. Through our website and digital communications, you can stay informed about the best-looking stock at any time. We now have a minimum order value of one full Danish trolley. This makes it simple to place top-up orders throughout the year, allowing you to be flexible enough to respond to customer demand and seasonal changes. With our new transport partner in place, we now offer the opportunity for more frequent deliveries each week. This allows you to order more regular and smaller amounts to ensure even fresher stock. Exciting plants added as promotions this year Our Best Selling plants this year As featured at Chelsea plant selection 4 5
