2 Page 2 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, DICK PIPPEN, RPIPPEN@COMCAST.NET Greetings Orchid Lovers The feature program for our November 2018 meeting got a bit confusing. First Segundo Cuesta of Quest Orchids was scheduled to be our speaker, but due to some health problems in the family he was unable to come. So, we decided to do a Plant Table Review by having some of the Plant Table Winners discuss their success stories. But, then at the last minute we were able to arrange, through the efforts of Kit Kitchen-Maran, to have Dr. Dennis Whigham of the North American Orchid Conservation Center (of the Smithsonian Institute), who just happened to be in town, as our featured speaker and what a pleasant, delightful surprise that was! NAOCC focuses on trying to ensure the survival of the 200 species of native orchids in the United States. According to the NAOCC website, Dr. Whigham s efforts focus on establishing collections of seeds and orchid mycorrhizal fungi, developing protocols to propagate and restore all native orchid species and developing an interactive website to provide the public with a mechanism to identify and learn everything that is known about our native orchids. His presentation was very informative and the work he and his colleagues are doing very exciting. Oh yeah, the NAOCC is also responsible for the orchigami project. As you all know the November monthly meeting is our Official Annual Meeting, at which time we elect officers for the coming year. The list of officers and directors elected appears elsewhere in this newsletter. But I do want to take a minute to thank our two out-going officers: Nanett Boerner (Treasurer) and Bill Overton (AOS Representative). They have done outstanding jobs for the Society and I really appreciate all their excellent efforts. THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU. It is hard to believe that another year has almost come and gone and that our next meeting will be our December Holiday Party and Potluck (on Dec 7). Remember that for that function we meet next door, in Moss Hall. As I always say the Naples Orchid Society orchid growers also know their ways around the kitchen and we always have such delightful and taste-tempting dishes at this event. I hope that ya ll can make it. So until then keep your orchids happy! Dick NOVEMBER MONTLY MEETING ATTENDANCE: 74 RAFFLE PROCEEDS: $225 CARE AND CONDOLENCE: A SYMPATHY CARD WAS SENT TO THE FAMILY OF NOS MEMBER TONY GRECO, WHO PASSED AWAY NOVEMBER 7. 6 Page 6 From Your AOS Rep, Bill Overton Are you ready for something fun and completely different? I am here to tell you about a wonderful web site that I stumbled upon back in May, The National Gardening Association. Their web address is garden.org. I just fell in love with the site and I enrolled for free. Once you sign up to participate, a whole new world will open up before you. My favorite thing is the forums. These forums (threads) cover all types of gardening topics - annuals, perennials, orchids, hibiscus, cacti, Plumeria, ferns, iris, begonias, dahlias, and so many more. If you would like to learn how to grow something they have a forum that covers it. In orchids they have forums such as What is in bloom for November 2017, What do you mount your orchids on?, Water culture, Do you Grow Laelias?, Anticipation, and Can anyone ID this orchid? There are so many forums and ways to participate and grow better orchids. You can post questions in the forums and someone will get back to you - in fact several people might respond. It is just a wonderful tool for us orchid growers! You can find me on the forums as Big Bill. They have a form of currency on their web site called acorns. You can get acorns by posting pictures, leaving helpful comments or advice. The web site explains it all. They run raffles on the site where acorns are used to purchase the raffle tickets. I was entered in the raffle and won a prize. Prizes are items like gift certificates for a rose nursery, perennial nursery, a peony grower, and literally all kinds of things. If you win you are notified by and you wait for your turn to select your prize. It is so much fun. There is even a forum thread on the raffles themselves. The web site is fun just to browse. So I invite you all to please check it out. And I promise you are in for a load of fun if you do. See you in the forums! Please use my reference member link: Bill/. You will be glad that you did!. Bill TASKS FOR DECEMBER From Florida Orchid Growing Month by Month by Martin Motes, Ph.D. Water judiciously and well. Protect cold sensitive genera. Provide extra potassium and magnesium. A BUS TRIP TO TAMIAMI INTERNATIONAL ORCHID FESTIVAL 2018 We are joining up with SWF Orchid Society, Sanibel, & GCOA for a BUS TRIP Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, to the Tamiami International Orchid Festival. $30 includes admission & bus ride! There's room under the bus for purchases. Pick up is at Island Draperies, Exit 101, at 8:30 & leaving at 3:00 to return by 5:30 pm. Checks or cash should be turned in December meetings as it is First Come First Ride! You can contact Lanelle at , or lbishop52@gmail.com.

7 Page 7 An Orchid Vignette White is White Or is it Pink Everyone knows that there is usually a lot of variation in hybrid orchids, that the offspring usually don t look like their parents, that the color of the hybrids are not always the same. And that is certainly the case with two very nice old-time, what I usually think of as white, orchids Bc. Mount Anderson and Bc. Mount Hood. The left photo below is what I know as Brassocattleya (Bc.) Mount Anderson, a nice 5-6 inch white Cattleya like flower, but the photo on the right is Bc. Mount Anderson Big Surprise, and as you can see, it ain t white! But it is an equally nice flower. Bc. Mt. Anderson is a cross between Cattleya Bow Bells and Bc. Déesse. It was created and registered by Beall Orchid Company in It has earned 30 AOS awards, but none recently. The grex has also been used as a parent in 66 crosses. It is not a compact plant and the pseudobulbs and their single leaves may easily reach one foot or so. Brassocattleya Mount Hood is also a white orchid that is sometimes pink. The photo left below, cultivar Peppermint Stick is white, but with a touch of magenta on the lip. The photo on the right is cultivar Orchidglade and as you can see, it is definitely pink. Bc. Mt. Hood is a cross between Bc. Déesse and Cattleya Claris. This grex was also created and registered by Beall Orchid Company in 1962, the same year as Mt. Anderson. Mt. Hood has had about the same number of AOS awards, 29, but it has been more successful as a parent used in 182 crosses and has over 300 grandkids. Like Mt. Anderson, this is a large-sized orchid and the pseudobulbs and their single leaves easily become a foot or so in length. Also interesting to note is that both of these orchids share a common parent, Bc. Déesse (a real old-timer created and registered in 1947 by Vacherot-Lecoufle Orchids of France). Beall Orchid Company of Seattle, Washington and their hybridizer, Daniel Harvey, had a thing for mountains. In addition to the two mounts above, they named 20 other orchids as Mount something or other. The Company apparently went out of business in As with many orchids the names have changed and both Mt. Anderson and Mt. Hood are now Rhyncholaeliocattleya. Regardless, they are still nice white orchids... or pink, as the case may be. Both of these orchids are available at Jade Orchids. Oh, by the way, the photos of the pink flowers above are borrowed from OrchidWiz Encyclopedia. Contributed by Dick Pippen
