1 May/June 2009 Presidents Message AsDawnandIreflectedonourtwo year termasco presidents,wearemostproud ofhowwellthebranchmembersworked together.membersralliedtoassistwith thebooksalesandtheproceedswere unprecedented,andwemetthebranch s commitmenttosupportscholarships.we usedthepayequityeventstohelpraise awarenessofthestatusofwomeninthe workplace.wehadtwowell attended soupandfilmgatheringswhereweshared delicioushomemadesoupsandthoughtful discussions.membershipremainedstable. Wehostedthe ThreeCupsofTea presentationbyjerenemortensonandhad outstandingbranchandcommunity participationandraisedalmost$3500to supportthecentralasiainstitute.wehad stimulatingpresentationsfromguestlike CathySultandiscussingherlatestbook andkatebowmanexplainingthethree wavesoffeminism.wecelebratedthe Branch s50thanniversarywithagrand eventatfannyhill.allofthiswas possiblebecauseofyou. Atconvention,Iwasabletoconferwiththestate Webminder, whohasdonealotof worktomakethestatewebsitemoreusefultomembers.ialsoattendedafascinating panelonscience,technology,engineering,andmatheducation,whereschoolofficials fromtheareaspokeabouthowtheywereabletoprioritizestemeducationevenina timeofdecliningbudgets.andigottobrushuponmyrobert srulesoforder. Weearnedthemoniker therowdybranch, anhonorificihopeweupholdnextyear. Anyguesseswhywegotthename? Lisaralliedtheentireconventiontobecome lobbyistsonthespotandtocallsenatorherb Kohl.Asindividuals,wearenotalwayssoeasily movedtoaction,butsheinspiredustocall Kohl slocalrepresentative andhiswashington office,tofillhisvoic boxes.shesaidto LisaMaatz AAUWDirectorofPublicPolicyand GovernmentRelations thankhimforhispastsupportofaauwissues,(hescores100%insupportofourissues),and toaskhimtosignonasaco sponsorofs.182,abilltoamendthefairlaborstandardsact. Thestudentsrecordedinterviewswithsevenaccomplishedwomenandonemanwhohavemade significantcontributionstouw EauClaire'swomen'sstudiesprogramandtofeminisminthe ChippewaValley.InadditiontoSarah,theoralhistoryprojectincludesinterviewswithAAUW membersdr.rose MarieAvinandKatieBowman,plusBarbaraBlackdeer Mackenzie,Carol Fairbanks,Dr.DavidJones,Dr.SusanTurellandKayingXiong.Theyallhadstoriestotellabout women'sanddiversityissuesand/ortheirpersonalstrugglestoachievetheirgoals.
