6 City of Phoenix Hance Park // Image Courtesy of!melk Identity is not Imitation Jerry van Eyck, ASLA //!melk Landscape Architecture + Urban Design 1.5 PDH (Non-HSW) Our ideas about, and expectations of, cities or places are not made exclusively in the physical space. The context for our ideas about cities and places is substantially in our heads rationalized as an aggregate of cultural viewpoints, media representations, and socio-economic constructions. Therefore the realm of identity in the design of a place exists not as mimicry but as a map of the conscious and subconscious associations of place and mind. Jerry van eyck, asla!melk s founding principal Jerry van Eyck possesses an unusual breadth and depth of skills that he applies to every project under his purview. Originally trained as an industrial designer, he approaches each commission balancing both the macro-scale - how public space fits into the larger context of a city s fabric and the urban experience, with the micro - materiality, ornamentation, and pattern as expressed through custom furniture, lighting, paving, and other details that provide each project its own singular identity. Having worked in the Netherlands for the first part of his career, his methodology for each project is rooted in a pragmatic yet imaginative approach, always emphasizing contextuality. Jerry is an adjunct professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a globally respected lecturer giving talks around the world and has served as a visiting critic at Harvard University s GSD, the Yale School of Architecture, and Columbia University s GSAPP, among others.
7 Transforming Industrial Waterfronts Through Mixed-Use Developments 1.5 PDH (HSW) Greg Weykamp, ASLA / Kathy Weykamp, ASLA / Suzanne Fromson, ASLA // Edgewater Resources This session will focus on economic development strategies that leverage the value of natural resources to transform underutilized public or industrial lands into economically viable mixed-use projects that can help revitalize communities. Greg Weykamp, asla, Leed ap bd+c has been working in the planning and design of the public realm, with an emphasis on implementation of sustainable built landscapes and urban waterfront environments, since his graduation from Michigan State University in Greg was a principal and leader of the Chicago office of EDAW AECOM before leaving to found Edgewater Resources in Kathy Weykamp, asla holds degrees in landscape architecture from Michigan State University and the University of Georgia, and focuses her efforts on interdisciplinary and large scale planning. She was a practice leader at EDAW in Denver and led the Olympic Equestrian Centre project for the 2000 Olympic games in Sydney. In 2010, she left EDAW AECOM to co-found Edgewater Resources. suzanne Fromson, asla, Leed ap is a planner and landscape architect with experience in the design and development of parks, waterfronts, and master planned communities. Her experience includes a variety of projects from community and site master planning, parks and recreation design and administration, and urban design. 8 Ann Arbor s Municipal Center // Image Courtesy of Conservation Design Forum Re-Imagining Authentic Michigan Landscapes High-Performance Sites, Neighborhoods, and Communities as a Tool to Foster Local Prosperity David Yocca, FASLA // Conservation Design Forum 1.5 PDH (Non-HSW) Approval Pending (Check MiASLA website for updates) As Michigan struggles to provide community services and infrastructure to foster a recovering economy, nearly every site, street, park, and campus will need to be refurbished, renovated, or rebuilt over the next ten to fifty years. This extraordinary challenge offers an enormous opportunity (and imperative) for landscape architects to help not only go beyond merely replacement with last century s technology, but to bring a new approach to maximize the value of every public and private dollar invested towards healthy human habitat in every context. david yocca, FasLa, conservation design Forum As Senior Partner with Conservation Design Forum, David Yocca has fortified the firm s position at the forefront of high-performance design and resilient place-making. David has lead a diverse array of urban-to-rural projects that demonstrate the effectiveness of ecologically-based strategies to restore cultural, economic and environmental vitality at the neighborhood, city, district and regional scales. With a deep understanding of Great Lakes ecosystems, climate and geography, David frequently directs the educational and assimilative process guiding clients, stakeholders and project partners towards new solutions encompassing green infrastructure, land-use strategies, food systems, energy systems, and hydrology. He is encouraged by the potential for all places to be restorative to the people they serve through attention to ecological, economic, and cultural performance and design integration.
9 Resilient Postindustrial Cities 2.0 Bill Wenk, FASLA // Wenk Associates, Inc. 1.5 PDH (HSW) Proposals for revitalizing America s postindustrial cities envision their dramatic transformation to become communities that are more socially, economically and environmentally resilient. The Detroit Future City Plan, a visionary strategy for remaking large areas of Detroit, is a prime example. Implementing the vision is the next challenge. The presentation will focus on recent redevelopment projects in Milwaukee, Saint Paul, Los Angeles, and Denver that illustrate the opportunities and challenges of creating communities that strive to be more socially, economically, and environmentally resilient. William e. Wenk, FasLa, Wenk associates president Bill Wenk is founder and President of Wenk Associates, Inc., a Denver-based landscape architectural firm. For over 30 years, he has been influential in the restoration and redevelopment of urban river and stream corridors, the transformation of derelict urban land, and the design of public parks and open spaces. He is recognized nationally for utilizing stormwater as a resource. His ability to define multiple-benefit solutions for complex issues in both new and established communities is demonstrated in a variety of urban settings across the country.
