2 The objective of the study visit is to give a visual experience of how completed restoration measures can look like. At the same time the study visit is also an opportunity to collect information about the different project areas and materal for the report. Bring the project text book (see Fig and detailed maps in appendices), pen and paper, and camera for documentation in the report. Note how the ground topography looks like and possible places for ponds, meanderings, wetlands, etc, in your project areas. Maybe existing variations in altitude, trees, etc, can be kept in your project plans. Where are pedestrian and bicycle paths? How will people pass through your area? What do you want them to experience? 3 how do potential measures fit into the existing habitation? Note also existing ecology in the area and by what way the biodiversity can be increased. It is also important to think about how the character of the area will change for people living close to the project areas. Do your suggestions fit in to the present character of the habitat and situation for people living in the area? Are there any children in the area or is it mainly industrial buildings? Maybe you will have time to interview some of the local inhabitants in the area!? Firstly, we will look at two locations with already restored areas (Fig. 11) within the Riseberga river catchment. The objective of the restoration was mainly to manage stormwater (mainly rainwater from urban areas such as roofs, parking lots, residential areas etc); the Toftanäs wetland park (Fig. 12) and the Sallerup road wetland area (Fig. 13). The Toftanäs wetland park treats stormwater from mainly industrial areas and parking lots east of the Toftanäs road. The ponds in the restoration area have as function mainly to serve as detention basins so as to avoid flooding in downstream areas. However, the dams with plants also means a large treatment effect for nutrients Figure 12 The Toftanäs wetland park; Vattenmiljöer i Malmö, Gatukontoret Malmö). and pollutants, such as heavy metals, oil, etc. These can either sediment, transform and/or be taken up by the plants. At the same time a rather exiting area has been created for the children and persons living close to the area (there is a daycare just south of the area). The Sallerup road wetland area also takes care of stormwater but the objective here is more to treat pollutants in the water not mainly detention to avoid floodings. The area is constituted by first of all (from east to west) a pond for sedimentation of particles. Not the weir (rectangular kind) that keeps a minimum water level in the pond (the same kind as in the flooding exercise that you will work with later on). After the pond there is a meandering area that adds oxygen to the water and gives organisms a good living condition. Plants and finally a root zone area finish the system that give trees and bushes possibilities to extract nutrients from the water. There is also a water fall that has been included to increase the areas attractivity! The water eventually discharges into the Riseberga river in a rather clean state. Note also the nice environment close to the river in the neighborhood. In the area the river runs through back yards of houses in a very lush
4 and subtle manner. Here, probably the people do not want to change much the river or to put large ponds and wet lands. After this we will go to the project areas and will let off the respective groups at the respective locations, firstly the Riseberga park, then the Toftängen, and finally the Käglinge road. You will stay about 2 hours at the project areas. Then the bus will again pick you up. Try to go through the area and think about what to do about the restoration and where different restoration elements can be put. Make schematics and drawings that you can bring back to the exercise room for further planning and discussion. Remember to take many photos. These can be used to describe the situation at present and also to remember how the details looked like in the areas.
