4 1 Introduction Growth Axis The stories of the city This project takes it s starting point with an interest in the public spaces in the city. These spaces are what connects and distributes all the different elements that coexist in the city through it s network of streets and plazas. Here people pass each other on their different ways through the city and here they often stop to meet each other. It is where the city presents itself, opinions about the city are formed and where all new city experiences begin. It starts when you enter the city through the door to your home or the transportation to the city; now you are present in the city, looking at it and moving through it. But the city never stays the same. It is full of people and programs that constantly change, and the city changes with them over days and weeks through the years. It is only when the city and its public areas can manage to integrate these shifts in time and space that it truly can become an adaptable city. Then the city holds the ability not to be fixed in presumptions about the future, to scale down the interdependencies between the different elements in the city, and to function in between temporary and permanent stages of time. A city by the Limfjord is located to the west of s city centre in the northern part of Jutland. Like the whole of the city, it s most important context is defined by it s connection to the Limfjord that strongly contributes to s identity. The fjord has since the first settlements in had a significant value both as an infrastructure and as a food resource to the life of the people that lived close to it. Today, a few kilometres before the fjord enters Kattegat, the larger city of stretches both across and along the fjord giving it a unique and valuable landscape void with possibilities and experiences that continue to evolve with the city. Expanding the city Build on former farmland to the west of the old city edge defined by the railway tracks became an important part the expanding industry in the beginning of the 20. th century. With factories situated throughout the area soon demanded dense housing for the workers while city functions also began to emerge with Haraldslund becoming the main public area. Here the sports stadium soon became an attractor to the whole city. At the same time the villas of the more wealthy inhabitants was build to the south of and joined together with the more dense buildings around Haraldslund. Transforming the city today offers a wide variety of city functions and experiences to its inhabitants. As it has transformed from a city that relied mainly on its important industries, it successfully accomplished to adjust to a shrinking industry through a high level of culture, education and new businesses forming the basis of a healthy socially sustainable city. With the growing amount of high educated young people - recently with the expansion of the University of - the city s biggest task is to enable opportunities for it s variety of inhabitants to live and work close together in order to strengthen the social networks and economies in the different local neighbourhoods as well as in the whole of.

Within the most noticeable green area is that of the Fjordpark. Frequently used by both locals and visitors it stretches along the fjord bringing the western landscape area into the city creating a green buffer zone between the city in the south and the water in the north. Over time the development in the area has generated a range of buildings with high architectural values as well as historic and cultural values. The area s mix of building typologies and variety in functions tells the story of a multifunctional city. Whether gives the impression of a dense city enriched with suburban qualities or the other way around it is a place that generates unique qualities in terms of diversity through it s functions, it s inhabitants and their different needs. Weaknesses While succeed in being a varied city it lacks an overall experience of hierarchy. The many identities found in the neighbourhood seems scattered and unable to unite in a collective framing. The area is physically well connected but visually detached and the streets are worn down and overrun by cars leaving bicycles and pedestrians under prioritised. Though there are some high quality green areas in the neighbourhood their green environment seize to unfold into the streets that connects them. The immediate qualities of being close to the water and the recreative features of the Fjordpark are dominated by the experience of these qualities not being fully visible or accessible throughout. The planning of a new light rail along Kastetvej that connects through the city centre introduce new interest and attention to the neighbourhood. It will bring evencloser to the rest of the city and strengthen the whole of s recreational connections. As Kastetvej is strengthened as the main entrance to it could support for a new hierarchy where Kastetvej becomes the backbone in the neighbourhood where all the different identities of can relate to. At the same time will benefit from a more green infrastructure with strengthened connections as well as new programming throughout the area. Challenges When developing over a long time span it is important to ensure that fixed decisions early on does not intervene with future possibilities. At the best there is a certain amount of flexibility incorporated into the whole of the project but still maintaining the ability to make and carry out important decisions at different stages. It is also crucial that the existing local identities with their architectural and historical values are strengthened through preservation as well as addition. New stories are oftentimes best told when they evolve from what has already been told. Vision Kastetvej turns into a strong backbone of. When you are on Kastetvej you know that you are in, this is the street on which you both enter and exit and where the most important features of the neighbourhood are made accessible and visible. As Kastetvej becomes the strongest line in this is where both new and existing identities will hinge themselves on to and thus become dependent on Kastetvej and but maintain the ability of being independent of each other. This makes able to adjust to different changes at different times and in different places as Kastetvej becomes the Collective Storyline of.

6 3 Kastetvej Identities Strategy Collecting, Connecting & Creating A selection of valuable areas in are singled out and collected along Kastetvej, connected across Kastetvej and corrected over time. This is done through different strategies. Connections Collected Storyline - Green strategy Where existing green areas are strengthened and new green areas are established in both streets and plazas - letting the nature back into the city. - Infrastructure strategy That optimises each individual form of transportation to, from and inside Vesbyen while strengthening and establishing new connections between the important places in Vesbyen - Identity strategy Existing infrastructure New Infrastructure Making Kastetvej become the main line and connector in that allows for the distribution, development and display of the different local identities. - Programatic strategy Enabling public spaces to be activated by different people at different times and allowing for a great deal of flexibility in the distribution of the programs and their contents. - Climate strategy Ensuring that climate changes become an included part of the rhythms and circulations in the city, making the climate both a benefit and an attraction.!

A new beginning Traffic on Kastetvej between Suensonsgade and Schleppegrellsgade has been succesfully redirected to the surrounding streets preparing the inhabitants, visitors and workers of for what will happen to the rest of Kastetvej. The future lightrail stop is being cut out of the road exposing a new recreational green surface. Here trees are plantet and local residents are invited to grow and maintain small gardens. A temporary pavilion is put up on the plaza where different planned activities; smaller concerts, local flee market are acompanied with everyday activities; streetcoffee, day-care excursions and local meetings. 2. Come closer While new plans for the Fjord Bath area to the west are being deploid the connection to and its green stretch are strengthended. The previous undefined western area of Fjordparken is given defined spaces through the establishment of the Park Hills. The hills of maximun 2 m in height brings shelter from the wind and weather to both visitors and people passing while maintaining a visual connection between the living quarters and the fjord. 3. The places we live Along with the retrofitting of the living quarters in the west the spaces in between the monotone building mass are collected with the general layer of active gardening, sports facilities, playgrounds and a local water drainage system. The lake, the Living Plaza with shared event buildings and the orchards are subdeviding the overall living area into diferent themes not only relevant to the surrounding blocks and their inhabitants but to the rest of the city. 4. Next Stop The link between the Vestby Station and the Hospital is a green experience of traveling on the bacskside of the city. A pedestrian bridge connects the Hospital as a stop on the green experience that continues south to the cultural establisments of. 5. Know-How and Education The former administrative parts and other ground level spaces of the hospital are reprogrammed to offer young entrepreneurs business and workshop fascilities. Through the colaboration between Region Nord and University the Entrepreneurship city is the regional center of entrepreneurship offering a range of educational programs and shared ressources. 6. Along the path various water related activities, scenic stops and green pauses are placed. 12. Take me there The light rail runs frequently between the three stops in vestbyen, the recreational areas to the west and throught the city centre and the city development in the east. Kastetvej forms the entrance to the different identities within vestbyen and continue to serve the purpose of filtering and allowing new people, new programs and new experiences into.
