1 Hedging and Forestry Transplants We are a well established nursery, boasting over 20 years experience in producing top quality field grown native shrubs, trees and hedging plants. We pride ourselves on being one of Britain s foremost providers of bare root, field grown plants, catering to your individual needs whether they are landscaping, forestry or agricultural industries, local authorities or private landowner. Our extensive range of stock originates from native sourced seed where possible or is produced in the form of hardwood cuttings from our own grown material. We have a dedicated nursery team with ample experience to assist with any enquiries regarding planting or aftercare. We also stock a range of plant protection products to aid establishment if required. Plant Specifications. At Wyevale we adhere to the National Nursery Stock Specifications as published by the Horticultural Trades Associations. To specify a bare root transplant is the most efficient way of ordering planting material; no pot, no peat, no heat, just plants in their basic form produced outdoors, hardy as nature intended. More than this, to specify transplants in the height range 30cm through to 100cm allows planting of material easy to handle and carry to site, quick to plant and on most sites, not requiring expensive staking. What age to specify? In most cases a 2 year old plant 40-60cm or 60-80cm, height is the best choice. A 1+1 transplant is the staple norm, 1u1 gives a slimmer, straighter plant. 1+2 a stocky bushier plant. Plants grown from hardwood cuttings rather than seed are given the rather perplexing term 0/1 or 0+1 to indicate age, in this example one year old. Key year seedling 1 year seedling undercut 1u1 and grown in situ for 1 further year 1 year seedling lined out 1+1 for 1 further year 1+2 fthd 1 year seedling lined out for 2 further years A young feathered tree 0/1 1 year hardwood cutting

3 Hedging and Forestry Transplants Broadleaf Varieties Listed below is our comprehensive range of broadleaf transplants/hedging. We pride ourselves on the quality of our stock and as they are grown on our nursery in Herefordshire they will transplant well in other UK locations. Stock grown in the UK for the UK. To achieve this we need to plant some 23,000 hectares per year for 40 years. Whether you are planning on planting a hedge, shelter belt or woodland it all helps towards this target. Applied by us at the point of packing as a gel root-dip. Gel protects roots: inoculant provides a dose of soil symbiotic fungi to aid establishment. Rural Hedging Generally a native hedge mix is used in farm and estate hedges or where attracting wildlife is a prime consideration. Examples of some rural hedge mixes are listed below. Farm Native Hedging Mix Hawthorn Blackthorn Common Oak Field Maple Hazel Dog Rose Native Hedging Mix Hawthorn Blackthorn Guelder Rose Spindle Common Dogwood Wild Privet Common Buckthorn Field Maple Scotch Rose Thornless Native Hedging Mix Hornbeam Field Maple Spindle Common Dogwood Hazel 120 All stock from known provenances. 16 If you are planting a rural hedge, don t forget to include a few other appropriate species; hedges look best when mixed. For ideas we suggest Cornus sanguinea (Common Dogwood) or Malus sylvestris (Crab Apple). Why not put in a few native hedge climbers; Rosa canina (Dog Rose) and Lonicera pericylmenum (Honeysuckle) these will give that rustic look. When planting trees, don t forget Britain s rare native Populus nigra betulifolia (Black Poplar), you will create a tasty legacy by including Juglans regia (Walnut) or Castanea sativa (Sweet Chestnut). Consider an under storey of shade tolerant shrubs such as Corylus avellana (Hazel) and Ilex aquifolium (Holly). Most of all, you own your planting; let it reflect your choice and enjoy it. 2. Ornamental Hedging The following varieties are more suitable for use in gardens: BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS (Common Box) CARPINUS BETULUS (Hornbeam) COTONEASTER SIMONSII (Himalayan Cotoneaster) FAGUS SYLVATICA (Beech) LIGUSTRUM OVALIFOLIUM (California Privet) single row 30cm apart double row 45cm apart single row 45cm apart double row 45cm apart double row 45cm apart Hedging and Forestry Transplants LONICERA NITIDA (Shrub Honeysuckle) PRUNUS LAUROCERASUS (Cherry Laurel) ROSA RUGOSA (Red Japanese Rose) CHAMAECYPARIS LAWSONIANA (Lawsons Cypress) TAXUS BACCATA (English Yew) THUJA PLICATA (Western Red Cedar) single row 45cm apart single row 45cm apart single row 30cm apart double row 45cm apart single row 45cm apart double row 45cm apart We are happy to advise and quote on hedge mixes to meet your needs.
