(now. ~.20.f STATEMENT OF SIGNIFlCANCE This is the only remaining example of a wooden truss structure in Virginia still in use. Located at its original site, it was complete3 in 1884 by the Richmond and Alleghany R.R. Company for Botetourt County, under terms of an ayreement datedmay 20, A copy of the agreement is attached, which includes the specifications. The bridge designated to be built at Jackson is now called the Springwood Bridge. The Richmond and Alleghany R.R. is the successor to the James River and Kanawha Canal Company. Under the agreencnt, the V.D.H.&T. acquired ownership of the bridge when it took over the County roads in Also, under the terms of the 1883 agreement, the C.&O. R.R. has continued t.o maintain the structure. The bridge exhibits an excellent balance between environnental and technological considerations. Using the criteria for significance developed by the ~esearch Council (June 13771, this bridge received a rating out of a possible 27.0 points.
