Please review the proposals in this booklet and provide your comments. The Jury will consider these comments when they make their selection in Early February. 2 Public Art Installation // Fairport Public Art Trail Public Review Period January 14-25, 2019 PROJECT OVERVIEW The art installation is envisioned to enliven the public space, promote the Village identity, and contribute to a vibrant and engaging experience for residents and visitors. The artwork will initially be displayed for a period 9-12 month period at the Kennelly Park Public Art Exhibit Space before being relocated to a permanent location as part of the Fairport Public Art Trail along the Eire Canalway Trail. This will be the first installation as part of the Fairport Public Art Trail. PROJECT BACKGROUND Public Art Trail The Village is developing a Permanent Public Art Trail along the Erie Canalway Trail. This linear sculpture park is envisioned to serve as a tourist destination for the region for trail users and boaters on the Erie Canal. Selected artist will be encouraged to incorporate interpretive elements related to the site history where appropriate. The initial phase of the Public Art Trail is located along a segment of the Erie Canalway trail between two business districts in the Village of Fairport and Town of Perinton. The Art Trail distance is just under one mile with services and parking available at each end. This segment of the canalway trail is very well utilized for recreational activities throughout the year. Future phases of the Art Trail will extend to the limits of the Town of Perinton. Kennelly Park Public Art Exhibit Space The Fairport Public Arts Committee is implementing a revolving Public Art display space in Kennelly Park. Artworks will be installed on the existing sculpture foundation in the park for a period of time. The Fairport Public Arts Committee has developed a fiscally sustainable plan to solicit durable permanent artworks for the Sculpture Park on a 2-3 year cycle. As the artworks are acquired, they will be temporarily displayed at the Kennelly Park Exhibit Space for a period of time and then relocated to a permanent location along the Public Art Trail. In the years between permanent public art acquisitions, smaller scale artworks will be commissioned for temporary display in the exhibit space. The smaller installations are envisioned to allow greater opportunity for emerging artists.

12 The following proposal is for the Kennelly Park site and Fairport Public Art Trail. Proposed is a sculpture created specifically for these sites and the Fairport community. It is designed to be a focal point of the park and be viewed from the many lines of sight the park s layout provides. The sculpture will be constructed of steel and finished with a painted surface. The sculpture will stand at 4 i At this scale the sculptures design will create a center piece for the surrounding architecture, landmarks, and pedestrian area. In designing the sculpture, I took great consideration to incorporate elements and design features that provided context to the to the surrounding landscape and cultural imagery. The sculpture creates a sense of place by incorporating some of the communities most iconic imagery. I have incorporated truss and arc forms to stylistically mimic the construction of the adjacent lift bridge. The vertical linear spires evoke a dynamic energy as they rise upward and forge through the organic forms. Capturing a sense of the canal being forged through the landscape and the energy and spirit of the community. Combined with these depictions, the ring form captures a sense of the sun rising and setting in the backdrop of this imagery over time. Setting the basis for the viewer to interact with piece and develop their own perceptions of the work. The enclosed images of the model are an accurate representation of the form, scale, and location of the sculpture. They also in include the proposed red color of the sculpture which I feel will help to emphasize the sculpture and create a vibrancy amongst the many neutral tones of the setting. I will be preforming all aspects of fabrication through assemblage, welding, and finishing. While overseeing sub-contractors for certain aspects such as material processing, sand blasting, and transportation. I am while versed the logistics of a public works project of this scale. Also enclosed is the product data sheet on the painting system I will be using. Tnemec is a two-part epoxy base paint system that is very durable and provides UV protection. Once all fabrication has been completed the sculpture will be sand blasted for proper cleaning and paint preparation. The surface will then receive a primer base followed by two coats of color. My primary concern in developing this proposal was the appropriateness of the sculpture for this site and the community. To develop a sculpture that would create a sense of place and identity. A sculpture that would enhance the publics experience when utilizing the park and surrounding area. If there is any additional information needed for your evaluation, please feel free to contact me.
