Ginsburg, General Manager Dana Ketcham, Director of Property Management and Reservations Lisa Bransten, Director of Partnerships Gardens adjacent to the Conservatory of Flowers Two Year Extension of the Permit for a Temporary Art Installation Agenda Wording: Discussion and possible action to approve a request from JSLH Foundation to extend for two (2) additional years, the placement of the temporary art installation entitled La Rose Des Vents by artist Jean-Michel Othoniel at the gardens adjacent to the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park for the period from July 1, 2018 to June 30, Strategic Plan Objective: 1.2: Strengthen the quality of existing Parks & Facilities Background: In 2015, the Rose Des Vents by artist Jean-Michel Othoniel was loaned to the City by the JSLH Foundation, which operates the 836M art gallery and temporarily installed in the gardens adjacent to the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park Golden Gate Park after approvals from the San Francisco Arts Commission on June 1, 2015 and the Recreation and Park Commission on July 16, Since that time the Department has twice extended the permit as the artist and the owners of the sculpture have worked with the City to permanently donate the work to the City. In October of last year, the San Francisco Arts Commission passed a resolution authorizing the Director of Cultural Affairs to enter into an agreement with JSLH regarding the proposed gift. Now all of the parties are working on installation and maintenance details in preparation for seeking approval from the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Commission for permanently locating the sculpture in Golden Gate Park and acceptance of the donation by the Arts Commission. The installation has been a popular attraction in Golden Gate Park and has provided a stunning art piece in the beautiful gardens at the Conservatory of Flowers and the Department is seeking approval to extend the installation for an additional year.
2 Artist Jean-Michel Othoniel holds the incredible distinction of the being the first living artist with a permanent commission in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles since the era of Louis XVI. During his residency at the Gardner Museum in Boston, Othoniel discovered an 18thcentury book entitled, The Art of Describing, by Raoul-Auger Feuillet. This book, and the drawings within, proved to be the inspiration for three beautiful fountain sculptures, Les Belles Danses, for the Versailles commission. The design for the art installation at the Conservatory of Flowers Gardens, La Rose Des Vents, is an extension of Othoniel s Versailles commission. The installation contemplates a brilliant sculpture adorned with vibrant golden spheres. The sculpture measures twelve and a half feet (12.5 ft) in height and is placed on a six foot (6 ft) square base which has been designed by the artist to be structurally sound. See Exhibit A for an image of the installation. A Structural Engineering Report certified that the square base is adequate to support the weight of the installation. Further, the City will continue to take no responsibility for any damage to the artwork pursuant to a waiver and release agreement signed by Othoniel. A comprehensive general liability insurance policy will continue to be required under the terms of the Permit thereby fully protecting the City. Staff Recommendation: Staff recommends that the Commission approve a one year extension to the permit for the La Rose Des Vents installation at the gardens adjacent to the Conservatory of Flowers.
