3 NAKED WARRIOR JOHN SEWARD JOHNSON II The First Ashore project was dedicated Veterans Day Located in Glorietta Bay Park the First Ashore installation includes a bronze statue commemorating the elite men of the Navy s Underwater Demolition Teams, or UDTs, of World War II. The Coronado City Council accepted the statue in April 2016 as a gift from the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida, and the U.S. Navy SEAL Foundation.

4 TRANSITION JON KOEHLER Located at the John D. Spreckels Center and Bowling Green and unveiled at the December 8, 2016 ribbon cutting for the facility this is the newest piece of public art in Coronado s collection. Final installation and lighting will be completed prior to the facility opening in February/March 2017.

6 TEA GARDEN 1904 BRONLE CROSBY JDSC & BOWLING GREEN GREAT ROOM - SOUTH WALL SCHEDULED FOR INSTALLATION SPRING 2017 Inspired by the JDSC & Bowling Green facility namesake, John D. Spreckels who created beautiful original Tea Gardens in Coronado as well as the beautiful tree on the front of this property the City of Coronado has commissioned San Diego artist Bronle Crosby to create a quadriptych (4-Panel) for this unique and significant space.

7 STREET TUNES VARIOUS ARTISTS A temporary public art installation project featuring an artistically decorated piano in Coronado. Inviting spontaneous opportunities for performance and public art display. Scheduled completion Spring 2017

8 SPONTANEOUS PERFORMANCES PUBLIC ART DISPLAYS OF UNIQUE PIANOS CAC is working on a trial public art piano for Spring Concept approved at the January 2017 CAC meeting with support of the City Manager.

9 CONCERT IN THE PARK KIRSTIN GREEN (2002) Kirstin Green s first public art installation was the three mosaic panels adjacent to the recently demolished Spreckels Park Bathroom. The panels have been saved and Green will be restoring the original panels along with installing two new large floral mosaics above the trough sinks in the new facility. The panels will be reframed in steel and new lighting installed. Scheduled completion Spring 2017

10 SPRECKELS BATHROOM PROJECT FLORAL MOSAICS KIRSTIN GREEN Two mosaics commissioned by the City to be mounted above the trough sinks on the new public bathroom located in Spreckels Park. Artist Kirstin Green is utilizing smalty tiles and the artwork is stunning!

13 PORTABLE BATHROOM TRAILERS SPRECKELS PARK Two new portable trailers have been purchased by the City of Coronado for temporary use during busy usage periods including the annual Coronado Flower Show, 4 th of July and the Summer Promenade Concerts. The Cultural Arts Commission has been tasked to wrap both of these trailers as they did the portable bathroom trailer (shown here) that is parked between the Hotel del Coronado and the Shores.

14 THE CAROUSEL SPRECKELS BATHROOM PORTABLE RESTROOM The concept design for the portable bathroom trailer adjacent to the children s playground in Spreckels Park will feature images of the Carousel that was in Tent City, Coronado in The Carousel, a 1910 Herschell-Spillman menagerie carousel was made in North Tonawanda, New York, and shipped to California. It was initially sent to Los Angeles, it turned up at the resort called Tent City in Coronado in It relocated to Balboa Park in 1922 and in 1968 was moved to its current spot adjacent to the San Diego Zoo.

15 CORONADO TRAIN CAR SPRECKELS BATHROOM PORTABLE RESTROOM The concept design for the portable bathroom trailer adjacent to the new bathroom facility is the historic railcar that ran in Coronado during the early part of the 20 th Century. The trailer will be wrapped to look like the original railcar and will include passengers (some famous visitors to Coronado).

16 ART OUTSIDE THE BOX WRAPPING OF CALTRANS SIGNAL BOXES IN CORONADO A collaborative project with Coronado Unified School District, the City of Coronado and the Cultural Arts Commission to wrap up to 14 Caltrans boxes throughout the City of Coronado. An afternoon school enrichment class for Middle School Students began this week and students will create designs and learn about the public art process from idea to installation! Boxes will be wrapped with juried designs from the student classes. First installations scheduled for late Spring 2017.

17 PUBLIC ART MASTER PLAN To enhance the cultural and aesthetic quality of life in Coronado by actively pursuing the acquisition, site selection, placement and preservation of art in public spaces and serving to preserve and develop public access to the arts. The continued vitality of the arts in the City of Coronado is an integral part of the future of the City as well as its citizens. The arts are important expressions of the cultural and economic energy of the entire community of Coronado; Public Art deepens our aesthetic life, not only enriching the artists but inspiring our citizens who see their work. Several organizations which exist in Coronado are active in the arts and provide leadership to the community on arts-related matters. The Cultural Arts Commission and its Public Art Master Plan will help ensure art remains an important part of the City s life. The arts have been instrumental in creating unique public places that have yielded physical, social, and economic benefits for a community. The purpose of this Master Plan is to provide a process for selecting, funding, commissioning, placing, maintaining, and de-accessioning art for the benefit of the City of Coronado and its residents.

18 CORONADO PUBLIC ART WALKING TOUR The Coronado Public Art Walking Tour Brochure is available online at CoronadoARTS.com. A printed copy is available at the Coronado Public Library, the Coronado Visitor s Center and City of Coronado City Hall. The brochure highlights 30+ pieces of Coronado s growing Public Art Collection as well as a map identifying the location of all pieces.
