This project has been reviewed and recommended for approval by the Boise City Arts Commission and the Parks Department Commission. The desired recommendation from the City Council is approval of the project designs so that the artists can proceed with fabrication. Thank you for your consideration. 2 Gone Native A public art proposal by: Reham Aarti Jacobsen, Rehamian LLC. Budget $22,000 Artwork Overview: Gone Native will be a tile mosaic mural featuring native Idaho Wildflowers that will cover the four walls of a concrete public restroom on the land of the Warm Springs Golf course. Site: The location for this piece is a City-owned public restroom on the land of the Warm Springs Golf course adjacent to the Green Belt. The Natatorium, the Boise River, and a wetland exhibit also flank the site. This seemingly rural location enjoys a great deal of traffic spring through fall. Since the restroom is heated in the winter and has front free water fountains, it receives a fair number of visitors during the winter months as well. The restroom enjoys great sight lines when approaching from the west (from the Memorial park area) or the South (from the river) and the display should draw the eyes of anyone coming from either of those directions. It is, however, more difficult to see if you are coming from the East traveling westward as the golf course protrudes into your sightlines. Golfers coming off the sixth (or fifteenth, if they flip the course on that day) green will be essentially walking right toward the west facing wall, on the way to the seventh tee. The restroom is perfectly placed along the course to encourage use. Design: The lower portion of the restroom is already tiled with cast river rock, referencing the natural surroundings. I want to continue the focus on the natural environment by featuring the colorful and diverse native Idaho wildflowers. The size of the flowers will range between 1-4 square feet. Each grouping or flower will be represented only once, so that each side of the structure will be totally unique. In all, more than thirty flowers will be featured on the building. The background mosaic, as well as the grout, will be mostly neutral to maximize the floral imagery. The names of the flowers will be drawn using gold-fired pen on fused glass. The flowers will not be geographically organized on the building, meaning that a flower from Northwestern Idaho might be right next to a flower from Southeastern Idaho. Rather, the identifying labels will be color coded so viewers will be able to quickly and easily identify the flowers natural habitats. A botanist will certify that all the flowers I m using are indeed native. I will also design a resource list that can be printed out from the web prior to visiting the building. The piece will contain information on all of the flowers, as well as the mosaic project itself. Further, the site will reference various books and websites that can be visited for a more indepth learning experience. This educate while we decorate process will enhance the educational opportunities available to local schools, organizations and the general public.

Materials: I will use stained glass, ceramic/porcelain tile, vitreous glass tile, found objects, and fused glass-- all outdoor safe materials, to add layers of texture and color.

Fabrication: I will fabricate the flowers on silicone mesh in my studio, for installation in the late spring/early summer of I will do all the background/fill-in work on site. The silicone mesh mosaic/background will be attached to the structure with Latapoxy 300 industrial adhesive, and then grouted over with Latacrete 2000 industrial epoxy grout. The manufacturer will underwrite a 50-year warranty for this application. The epoxy and polymer modified epoxy adhesives will make the mosaic as strong and durable as possible. All installation methods and materials conform to the TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation guidelines. Maintenance: The entire mosaic installation will be attached and grouted in epoxy thereby ensuring its durability regardless of weather conditions. The epoxy will not absorb graffiti like grout would, so it does not need to be sealed. All mosaic materials are certified for exterior use. There are no special concerns with sprinklers, and all materials will withstand the use of an industrial solvent in the event of graffiti. Washing with ph neutral soap and water is all that is required for routine cleaning on a periodic basis, as needed. The Golf Course staff has agreed to take care of this. Safety concerns: The mosaic will be a structural part of the building, and therefore would pose no safety threat; it is essentially a decorative effect of the building. Existing restroom facility
