1 North West Young Planners - Summer Newsletter Greetings From The Chair I hope you have all been enjoying the Olympics as much as I have over the last few days. As I type this I am on my way down to London to experience the beach volleyball, handball and football first hand. I can t wait! It is not just the cheering, tears and heroics I am looking forward to, but also seeing the finished product the Olympic Park. I was there about six months and was slightly worried by what I saw. It was no-where near finished and all looked a bit, well, messy. However there have been good reports since the opening of the Games and it does look rather shiny on TV. I therefore hope to take great pride in visiting the Park, a shining emblem of what good planning can achieve, and I know it sounds rather cheesy, but it s a Gold for all in the planning profession. So well done us! On this Olympic themed note, I hope that you will all join us in celebrating the Olympics at our Planning Olympiad Event on the 23 rd. Come down to Gorrilla Bar for ridiculous Olympic themed games and drinks, as well as the opportunity to socialise with planners from across the NW. We are also very pleased to offer you a chance to tour round Liverpool World Heritage Site with the Chair of the Steering Group. Come along on the 14 th to hear it all straight from the horse s mouth, from the beginnings of trying to get the site nominated to the latest controversy. I hope to see you all at an event soon. Katie Wray Chair of the NWYP Committee BNSP Meet Up 18th May The North West Young Planners made the most of the opportunity to make international friends and connections in May as members of the BSNP, the National Dutch Professional Association for Urban Planners and Urban Designers, chose Manchester as the place to go for their first ever international trip! Fresh from their visit to Manchester's Sharp Project, it was a pleasure to meet for drinks and share experience and knowledge with our Dutch counterparts in Simple Bar in the Northern Quarter. The BSNP were inspired to come to Manchester due its history of successful and innovative regeneration. It was fascinating to hear their perspective on major regeneration projects in the area; as well their overall impression of the City - its atmosphere, transport system, and of course the hit and miss weather! The group looked forward to a jam-packed schedule, which included visits to Spinningfields; Salford Quays; Chimney Pot Park and Beetham Tower as well as exploring some of the city s best restaurants and bars. The itinerary saw the group visiting a range of projects comparing those developed under the formal planned approach, with examples of more informal bottom-up regeneration. The enthusiasm and organisation of the BNSP Group has certainly inspired us for our future NWYP activities. We hope one day we will be able to repay the visit! Thank you to Remco and Jerryt and the rest of the BSNP Young Professionals for such an enjoyable evening. 1

Liverpool Waters Lecture 20 th June On Wednesday 20 th June the NWYPs in conjunction with Merseyside Civic Society held a hugely successful Liverpool Waters event.

The talk provided an overview of the schemes development and highlighted the major planning challenges faced in successfully achieving planning approval.

2 Liverpool Waters Lecture 20 th June On Wednesday 20 th June the NWYPs in conjunction with Merseyside Civic Society held a hugely successful Liverpool Waters event. Paul Grover of WYG, the planning consultants for Liverpool Waters, kindly presented the scheme to around 40 people at the University of Liverpool. The talk provided an overview of the schemes development and highlighted the major planning challenges faced in successfully achieving planning approval. A fly through of the scheme gave a strong visual impression of the final design. A question and answer session was held after the presentation where some tricky questions were posed! Questions were in relation to the economic impact, employment, impact upon the local community and of course, the heritage impact. These were well answered and the discussion could have continued well into the evening! Overall the event was hugely interesting and was enjoyed by all. The NWYPs would like to thank WYG, MCS and the University of Liverpool for donating their time and venue. Greg Clark Meeting 10 th July After a long period of lobbying the Young Planners Network were finally granted an audience with Greg Clark, Minister for Decentralisation and Cities. On 10 th July eight Young Planner Chairs, including yours truly, from across the regions sat nervously in the reception of DCLG with Trudi Elliot, RTPI s Chief Executive, waiting to be called for the meeting. Nerves, were however, soon dissipated as we entered in to spirited debate with the Minister almost immediately after introductions. The 2 hour meeting covered a range of topics, with CIL top of the list. The ministerial message overall was one of positivity. He called upon planners across the profession to have a responsibility and obligation to promote, present and perform. He encouraged active involvement and presentation of solutions to Government through writing, lobbying and debate. The Young Planners certainly gave the Minister a perspective on the career of, and issues faced by, early career planning professionals. Excitingly, at the close of the meeting, the Minister agreed to attend the YP Conference in London 25 th 27 th. So make sure you get your ticket early! 2

3 Year Ahead & Upcoming Events A look ahead at future NWYP events, RAC meetings and national Young Planners events being held later in the year. NWYP Events: World Heritage Site Walking Tour, Liverpool 6.30pm, Tuesday 14 th August Fancy a stroll around a world renowned area of Liverpool? Come along and join a walking tour of the Liverpool World Heritage Site. Led by Professor Ian Wray, Chair of the Liverpool World Heritage Site Steering Group, the tour will visit some of the most famous locations within the Heritage Site whilst discussing their background and contribution to Liverpool s World Heritage Status. Some of the more controversial planning issues surrounding the WHS will also be discussed! The Tour will begin at 6.30pm, meeting at the Seamans Gates, at the corner of Hanover Street and Duke Street, by John Lewis. Planning Olympiad, Gorilla Bar, Manchester 6pm, Thursday 23 rd August Year Ahead & Upcoming Events The Great Planning Debate, Manchester September 2012 After the success of 2011 s Great Planning Debate, the event returns to pick up where we left off last year. Join us and a variety of special guests, including a lead developer and consultant to discuss the planning issues of today & beyond. Contact AmyLongmore@tep.uk.com for further information. Other Upcoming Events... We have several other events to look forward to in To celebrate the Preston Guild, we hope to arrange an event in Preston in conjunction with one of the official Preston Guild Events, focused on the built environment. Watch this space for more information. We are also looking to arrange a Halloween Walking Tour in Liverpool and an event to celebrate World Town Planning Day on 8 th November. Finally we are well under way with organisation of our big Inter-Professional Event in November. Last year this was held in Manchester Museum to much critical acclaim. This year we are going even bigger and have several organisations signed up already including ICE, IstructE, CIBSE, StreetNW, Manchester Student Society of Architects and CIOB (get Googling on those acronyms!). The NWYPs are celebrating the London 2012 Olympics with a one-off summer team building event with an Olympics theme. Teams of 3-5 will participate in a number of planning related activities in order to be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Free refreshments will be provided throughout the evening. 4 Year Ahead & Upcoming Events National Young Planner Events: RTPI National Young Planners Conference 2012 This year the RTPI National Young Planners Conference will be hosted by the London Young Planners group. This year s theme is Planning: Striking a Balance & the conference offers the opportunity to learn about current issues facing planning from a wide range of high quality speakers including Colin Haylock, Liz Peace, and Alex Thomson. The conference will be held on the 26 th & 27 th of October at RIBA, 66, Portland Place, London. Early bird tickets are now available priced at until September 10 th.this will prove to be an invaluable event to attend so make space in your diary for the young planners event of the year and head to to book your place. Planning Summer School 2012 Planning Summer School will be taking place this year from the 14 th -17 th September (Friday to Monday) at Liverpool Hope University. The focus this year is Planning for Legacy with sessions including workshops on the Olympic legacy, sustainable travel, professional ethics, local cooperation, green infrastructure and predetermination, as well as halfday study tours and briefings on neighbourhood planning and the Merseyside renaissance. Year Ahead & Upcoming Events RTPI North West Events: Neighbourhood Planning & Community Engagement Halliwell Jones Stadium, Warrington, Wednesday 5 th September The Localism Bill introduces a system of Neighbourhood Planning, giving new planning powers to neighbourhoods. This event will look at how the local planning authority and other stake holders can work together with the local community to shape their neighbourhoods. It will consider the best ways to engage the local community in this process, to foster community involvement and to empower individuals to shape their own towns and cities. Enforcement Update: Has Enforcement Got Teeth? DLA Piper, Manchester, Wednesday 19 th September This year s update will benefit not only those new to this specialist area of planning, but will also allow those with some experience to expand their knowledge. The event will also be useful to those officers involved in the legal aspects of planning enforcement work. The event will cover a variety of topics including a presentation by a Barrister from Kings Chambers on recent cases on enforcementcurrent issues in the Courts. It is hoped that the topics will encourage open discussion amongst delegates, allowing the opportunity to exchange views and experiences on overcoming the difficulties of putting theory into practice. Development Management Update Hilton, Blackpool, Thursday 18 th October This session will explore the implications of recent case law and the way in which the development management process has been affected by recent policy and legislative changes. The session will be relevant to both public and private sector planners involved in development management or policy.. 4

Following gaining her MRTPI in July 2011, Aneesha left her role at Turley Associates for a career sabbatical.

5 Young Planner Profile: Aneesha Jain (Liverpool Rep) Planner, ATKINS Background: Aneesha graduated from the MCD Master of Civic Design (RTPI accredited) course at the University of Liverpool in Prior to this, Aneesha completed a BA (Hons) degree in Social Policy and Sociology at the University of Sheffield. Aneesha began life in planning with work experience in the Planning Department of St Helens Borough Council, before starting at Turley Associates. Aneesha gained a variety of experience at Turley Associates, predominately in the retail sector. Following gaining her MRTPI in July 2011, Aneesha left her role at Turley Associates for a career sabbatical. She is now working at Atkins, specialising in infrastructure, water and environmental planning. Role and ambitions for NWYP: Aneesha joined the RTPI Regional Activities Committee and Young Planners Steering Group in 2010 and enjoys organising social events. At first, Aneesha assisted in the coordination of the Manchester events. Presently, Aneesha is focusing her attention on co-ordinating events in the Liverpool Region and will focus on this for the next few years. Interests within planning: Aneesha has a variety of planning interests, including infrastructure, retail, heritage, housing, and the creation of sustainable communities. Aneesha is keen to continue her experience in the various sectors of planning. North West Young Planners in Social Media: The North West Young Planners have joined the social media movement by launching a Twitter account and re-launching our Facebook group. We believe that both Facebook and Twitter are a great way to share information and events, discuss topical issues, and mobilise (potentially) thousands of people to our cause. With 121 followers on Twitter and 61 members in our Facebook group, we re making great strides towards a more active group of young planners within social media join the movement today!
